Mit diesem Werk überschritt die 1971 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, USA, gegründete Band tatsächlich Grenzen. Glenn Frey (Leadgesang, Gitarren, Keyboard, Harmonium, Klavier), Don Henley (Leadgesang, Schlagzeug, Tablas), Randy Meisner (Leadgesang, Bass, Gitarre) und Bernie Leadon (Leadgesang, Gitarren, Steel Guitar, Banjo, Mandoline) wollten sich mehr härteren Rocksounds zuwenden. Ihnen im Weg stand Produzent Glyn Johns, der den gewohnten Country-Sound in den Vordergrund stellte. Nach zwei bereits aufgenommenen Titeln wechselte die Band den Produzenten und holte sich Bill Szymczyk an ihre Seite. Frey hatte die Idee, Don Felder für ein Slide-Gitarrensolo zu holen. Als er dies für den Song „Good Day in Hell“ einspielte, waren die Vier so beeindruckt, dass sie Felder als 5. Eagle einstellten. Aufgenommen wurde die Scheibe 1973 und 1974 in den Record Plant Recording Studios in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, USA, und in den Olympic Studios, London, England. Es gibt schon viele Veröffentlichungen dieses Albums. Mit der aktuellen Neu-Veröffentlichung sind die Aufnahmen nun in der Königsklasse angekommen. Limitiert auf 10.000 erscheint das Werk in 45-RPM-Auflage, verteilt auf zwei LPs in 180-Gramm-Qualität. Editiert wird die aufwändig gestaltete Box vom Klangexperten-Label MFSL (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab). Seit 1977 haben sich die Klang-Gurus einen absoluten Spitzenplatz für audiophile Qualitätspressungen gesichert. Und so ist es auch hier wieder der Fall! Und natürlich kommt die One Step Ultradisc einzeln fortlaufend nummeriert. Die LPs sind in Mofi-Supervinyl gepresst. Und es ist eine exklusive Auflage. Nachpressungen wird es nicht mehr geben. Den Auftakt macht „Already Gone“. Dieser Song trägt schon deutlich die Hand- bzw. Sound-Schrift von Szymczyk. Nach dem countryesken geht es mit geradlinigem, vorwärtstreibenden Rock'n'Roll weiter. Wie immer bei den Eagles beeindruckt der saubere Harmoniegesang. Ein perfekt aufgenommenes Piano leitet den balladesken Song „You Never Cry Like A Lover“ ein. Leise und lautere Passagen wechseln sich hier geschickt ab und sorgen für enorme Dynamik. Der Titelsong ist richtig starker Rock. Die Gitarren produzieren ein spannend feuriges Riff-Feuerwerk. Das funkige Gitarrensolo im Clean-Sound ist outstanding. Der Gesamtklang ist druckvoll und es macht richtig Spaß, dieses Hörerlebnis (neu) zu genießen. Den Abschluss dieses 10-Track-Albums macht „Best of My Love“. Der warme analoge und crispe Klang der Akustik-Gitarren, der glockigen Pedal-Steel-Guitar und der feine Gesang bleiben noch lange im Ohr, auch nachdem der Tonarm schon längst wieder hochgestellt wurde. Die Box kommt mit Goldprägedruck mit der wunderschönen Artwork des Navajo-Künstlers Beatien Yazz. Eine Original-Replik des Covers ist der Edition beigelegt. Die LPs kommen in einzelnen extra gestalteten Single-Sleeve, ebenfalls mit Goldprägedruck und verkleinertem Bild des Covers. Best of My Love ***************************************************************************************** Rezension Der Wunsch der Band nach mehr Rock’n’Roll stieß beim für die ersten beiden Alben verantwortlichen britischen Produzenten Glyn Johns nicht auf Gegenliebe, weswegen die Sessions nach zwei Songs abgebrochen wurden (deren einer, “The Best Of My Love”, war dann aber ausgerechnet der endgültige Durchbruch der Band: Platz 1 der Pop-Charts!). Es übernahm Joe Walsh(!)-Produzent Bill Szymczyk, der den Session-Gitarristen Don Felder ins Spiel brachte – von dem die Band so begeistert war, daß sie ihn gleich als Vollzeitmitglied übernahm. Die neue Gangart wird am besten von kraftvollen Songs mit Allman Brothers-Einschlag wie dem Opener “Already Gone”, “James Dean” oder “Good Day In Hell” repräsentiert; die ‘alten’ Eagles sind aber mit “Midnight Flyer” und Bernie Leadons rührendem Gram Parsons-Nachruf “My Man” durchaus noch vertreten. Die Band schlägt eine härtere Gangart an, die aus ihrem eher entspannten Territorium herausführt und die US-Amerikaner als Rockband etabliert. Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Neumitglied Don Felder und Co. verkünden ihre Absichten gleich im trotzigen Eröffnungshit "Already Gone" und blicken nicht mehr zurück. "On the Border" ist das von Anfang bis Ende wohl beständigste und ausgewogenste Werk der Eagles. Das analoge Originalband wird durch MFSL in ein 4x DSD-File transferiert, nachdem eine Einzelanpassung der Spurlage des Tonbandes und die Bias-Einstellung für jeden einzelnen Titel vorgenommen wird. Hiervon wird dann im Studio in Sebastopol der Lackschnitt gefertigt. Die One-Step-LP-Boxen von MFSL sind das Maß der Dinge im Bereich der audiophilen Re-Issues und qualitativ noch oberhalb der sonstigen Produktionen des wohl bekanntesten Remastering-Studios der Welt anzusiedeln. More About Mobile Fidelity UltraDisc One-Step and Why It Is Superior Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) technique bypasses generational losses inherent to the traditional three-step plating process by removing two steps: the production of father and mother plates, which are created to yield numerous stampers from each lacquer that is cut. For UD1S plating, stampers (also called “converts”) are made directly from the lacquers. Since each lacquer yields only one stamper, multiple lacquers need to be cut. Die expressiven Gitarrensoli teilen sich Felder und Frey. „Hollywood Waltz“ gewinnt durch den gekonnten Einsatz vonMandoline und Pedal-Steel-Gitarre, beides gespielt von Henley. Als Singles ausgekoppelt wurden „Its Too Late“ / „I Feel the Earth Move“ (April 1971) und „So Far Away“ / „Smackwater Jack“(März 1971). Das lyrische Titelstück ist wahrlich seelentief und fesselnd. Ein weiterer Höhepunkt ist „You've Got A Friend“. James Taylor machte diesen Song später zum absoluten Welt-Hit. Taylor, der damalige Lebenspartner von King, ist übrigens auch mit seiner Akustikgitarre bei dieser Produktion aktiv beteiligt. Wie gut die Klangkraft dieser Edition ist, kann man bei „Home Again“ nachhören. Das Klavier klingt voll präsent. Jede Nuance, ja selbst die Intensität des Anschlags ist nachspürbar. Ihn lernte Parsons in den Abbey Road Studios kennen. 1976 veröffentlichten sie als Alan Parsons Project das Album „Tales of Mystery and Imagination“. Das war der Initialschuss für eine Weltkarriere. Im Jahre 1977 folgte das kommerziell sehr erfolgreiche Album „I Robot“. Die bei Arista Records erschienene Schallplatte wurde im Zeitraum von Dezember 1976 bis 1977 in den Londoner Abbey Road Studios aufgenommen. Es gilt als absoluter Klassiker des Art- und Progressive-Rock. Insgesamt 10 Titel befinden sich auf dem Werk. Es ließ damals schon aufhorchen wegen dem klasse Sound. Nun liegt es in einer noch weiter verbesserten Klangqualität vor, nämlich als Mobile-Fidelity-UltraDisc-One-Step-(MoFi)-Edition. Es erscheint als super saubere Pressung in 180-Gramm-Qualität in 33 RPM. Beherbergt ist es in einer ästhetisch gestalteten Box mit Goldprägedruck und verkleinerter Coverabbildung. Natürlich ist das Original-Klappcover der Box beigefügt. Dazu gibt es noch die LP in einer extra gestalteten Hülle mit Qualitäts-Kunststoff-Innersleeve. Außerdem liegt noch ein Beiblatt bei, das den Pressvorgang exakt beschreibt mit Text und Bildern. Aber nun zum Klangerlebnis. Den Anfang macht das Instrumentental und gleichzeitig Titeltrack „I Robot“. Hektische Betriebsamkeit wird hörbar. Immer lauter werdende Keyboardsounds erobern den Hörraum. Sie erreichen den Hörer mit unglaublicher Nähe. Dann ertönt das Schlagzeug mit absolut natürlich aufgenommener Snare-Drum. Eine groovige E-Gitarre treibt den Song voran. Weit aus dem Weltraum kommen intensive Harmoniegesänge, die direkt in die Seele treffen. Hier offenbart sich eine sehr intensive, ausgefeiltere Neu-Erhörung. Mehr an Dynamik und exakter Abbildung geht nicht. Es ist schon erstaunlich, was man durch das Re-Mastering von den Original-Analog-Tapes noch rausholen konnte. Ein weiteres Highlight ist „Day After Day (The Show Must Go on)“. Der feine Gesang strahlt maximales Gefühl aus. Die Melodielinien setzen sich mit Leichtigkeit in den Gehörgängen fest und bleiben für immer im Hörgedächtnis. Das zweite, in dieser Serie produzierte Album, war Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon. ........... Es handelt sich hierbei um eine audiophile Rarität und eine der bestklingendsten Schallplatten die jemals hergestellt wurden. Das original Masterband welches zur Produktion dieses audiophilen Highlights zur Verfügung stand, war von exquisiter Qualität. Was dann die Spezialisten von MFSL daraus machten kann man nur als sensationell bezeichnen. Nie wieder wurde vermutlich solch ein Aufwand zur Herstellung einer LP betrieben (was vor über 230 Jahren für einen horrenden Preis sorgte). Sorgfältigst mit der Halfspeed Schneidetechnik geschnitten und in 200 Gramm Virgin Vinyl gepresst wurden weltweit nur 5000 Exemplare hergestellt. Jede LP ist einzeln handnumeriert und mit einem vom Präsidenten von MFSL unterschriebenen Zertifikat versehen.
