Musikerkollegen wie Miles Davis bezeichneten den Mann mit dem kräftigen Sound als „den größten Tenorsaxofonisten aller Zeiten“, John Scofield nannte ihn als gar als „einer der größten Musiker des 20. Juni 1956 zeigt seine Stärke, dem Jazz etwas Individuelles zu geben: dem Swing verleiht er neue Energie, dem Hardbop neue Spannung und im Improvisieren war er ohnehin ein Meister.
