For this kind of small, nine person ensemble, I think producer Mike Valentine's, "minimalist with some spotlight mike enhancement" approach works really well. The performance was captured at London's AIR Studios and recorded direct to disc to a Neumann VMS 80 lathe. The Gefell, AKG and Flea tube microphones fed an AIR custom Neve board. Record Industry pressed the 180 gram vinyl. The combination of D2D and perfectly quiet disc surfaces produce impressively wide dynamic swings that descend into pitch darkness and ascend to occasionally explosive heights (within the context of a small string ensemble).I've heard more intensely three-dimensional recordings of small string ensembles but if harmonic structure is King and transparency Queen, then this recording rules. Just don't play it at too high an SPL level. Despite the D2D inhibitions, the Interpreti Veneziani plays here with great spirit. There's also a nice balance of direct to reflected sound A superbly produced, engineered, performed and presented edition of the "Four Seasons". Sound 10/10 Music 10/10 Michael Fremer Analogplanet. The first new direct-to-disc recording to come my way since I can’t remember when,this originates from a British company called Chasing the Dragon by way of the Italian chamber group Interpreti Veneziani, which on this occasion numbers four violinists, a violist,a cellist, a double-bassist, a harpsichordist, and a solo violinist. According to the producer, Mike Valentine, the recording technology—a direct mike-feed to the cutting lathe, which once it begins cannot be interrupted without starting again with a new lacquer—dictated choice of repertoire, since a pair of seasons easily fits on perspective seems a bit close-up: I never felt I was hearing an ensemble deployed realistically in a convincing space. Paul Seydor The Absolute Sound Top Ten Records of 2016 On Friday 13th of June (we don't do superstition) AIR Studios hosted it's first ever (and perhaps the most ambitious of recent times) direct to disc recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons performed by the leading Venetian Orchestra Interpreti Veneziani. The project was the brainchild of Audiophile producer Mike Valentine, engineered by Jake Jackson live from AIR Studio 1 and cut straight onto master lacquer by John Webber via our Neumann VMS80 lathe. The purpose of working this way is to produce a vinyl release as pure and unprocessed as possible, skipping the convoluted electronics of tape or hard disc recording. Also Interpreti Veneziani are very fine musicians who impart a verve and fresh perspective into this famous concerto, something worth capturing in it's rawest form. Four Seasons in one day Spring & Summer were cut onto side A and Autumn & Winter onto side B. At 20 minutes per side this was very tight as cutting long sides without the tight packing of vary-groove can be tricky. "We knew we'd have to adjust the pitch (amount of groove lines cut over a set diameter) manually, saving space where possible" John states "Mike Valentine provided a CD version of the ensemble playing Four Seasons and this was used as a guide prior to the session; helping establish possible settings. At 96% disc space used from an approximate source we knew things would be tight on the day". AIR's technical director Tim Vine-Lott provided balanced tie lines from studio one with John carrying out listening tests to ensure a good signal was getting up to the mastering room. Ray Staff was also on hand to offer wisdom and guidance prior to the session as one of the few engineers in the country who has done this before. Talkback was setup between the two rooms and John cued the studio once the cutter head was down and lead in groove cut. There is no editing or stop/start possible in this process, Vinyl records are 'normally' one complete groove from start to finish. How did it sound? Mike Valentine is a big fan of the work of Doug Sax's & Lincoln Mayorja's Sheffield Lab recordings. The vision was to produce a truly unique and vibrant classical release on vinyl. This method, although technically risky (A problem with the cut or pressing could result in total failure) is certainly purest and eliminates the multi tracking stage entirely. A few microphones (including Mike's preferred Neumann M50 Decca Tree array) and two tracks straight from Studio One's Custom Neve 8056 were all that was used apart from a passive insert box, elliptical equaliser and the lathes electronics. The sound of the test cut genuinely knocked everyone’s socks off. John says "The mids shone like I've never heard before, in fact they were quite forward so I asked Jake to back them off a bit on the console, I feel like this is what I want to hear every time from vinyl". Anyone who entered the room that day for a playback was in agreement that it sounded three dimensional and open. Certainly this is no gimmick, it's a wholly impractical and expensive way to work, but cutting straight to lacquer has an unequivocally pure but rich tonality and clarity. Gleich beim Opener "Sing Sing Sing“ wird man in den Sucht-Bann gezogen. Hier trifft musikalisches Können und Leidenschaft auf Präzision und Emotion. Mit viel Verve und Empathie führt Syd Lawrence sein Orchester. Dieses Orchester gilt nicht zu Unrecht als DIE britische Top-Big Band. Eindrucksvoll ist das auf dem sauberst gepressten Vinyl nachzuhören. Hier groovt und schiebt es, dass es eine wahre Freude ist. Das Zusammenspiel von Basser Tom Mark und dem energiegeladenen Drummer Dave Tandy ist phänomenal. Es macht richtig Freude dem variantenreichen Rhythmus-Duo zuzuhören. Man kann auch unschwer die Freude spüren, die die Musiker beim Einspielen dieses Albums gehabt müssen. Eine wunderschöne, melancholische Zeitreise gibt es mit Glenn Millers "In The Mood“. "American Patrol“ swingt, und lässt einen schier nicht ruhig sitzen. Pianist Trevor Brown lässt herrliche blue notes perlen. Unaufdringlich, aber im entscheidenden Moment voll präsent. Das Arrangement der Bläsersätze ist Weltklasse. Die Trompeten, Saxophone und Posaunen tanzen stilsicher und spannungsgeladen miteinander einen sehr heißen Tanz. Was diese Doppel-LP aber erst richtig Klasse macht ist der Sound. Hä, welcher Sound? Man kann hier nämlich wählen, ob man sich die Aufnahmen “Direct To Vinyl Disc“ oder “Multi Track Analogue Tape Recording And Mix Down“ anhören möchte. Beide Versionen liegen im Doppel-Album vor. Das ist total spannend und für High-End-Friends ein absolutes Muss. Zusätzlich ist dem Ganzen ein Internet-Link zu Filmaufnahmen beigelegt. Hier kann man die Entstehungsgeschichte sehr gut nachvollziehen. Herrlich in das Studio quasi mithineinzugehen. In diesem Studio, das ursprünglich eine Kirche war, arbeitete auch schon Gründer George Martin. Man ist Zeuge der Mikrofonierung und man kann Producer Mike Valentine, Balance Engineer Jake Jackson, Cutting Engineer John Webber und Studio Engineer Tim Vine-Lott über die Schulter schauen. Ein herrlicher Anblick ist das gigantische analoge Mischpult. Diese Offenbarung an wundervoller Musik, finalem super high end Sound und analoger Spitzen-Technik ist woanders kaum zu finden. Man kann natürlich nicht sagen, wo die live eingespielte LP besser klingt. Es gibt nur andere Schwerpunkte. Letztlich entscheidet der eigene Geschmack. Das “Analogue Tape Recording“ ist ingesamt geschlossener, konservativer und bildet den Klangkörper in seiner Gesamtheit, gerade bei den Bläsersätzen kompakter ab. Die “Direct To Disc“- Variante ist dynamischer, mit mehr Feinauflösung und spritziger. Sie bildet auch das Schlagzeug, vor allem die Becken, luftiger ab. Beide Varianten haben was. Welche Seiten sie öfter auflegen wollen, entscheiden Sie. Falsch machen können Sie nichts. Außer Sie kaufen diese tolle Edition erst gar nicht. Für das Album ließ Valentine die Band einfach ein "normales" Set spielen – sprich: ein Programm aus acht Klassikern der Orchester von Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman und Artie Shaw. Nummern wie "Moonlight Serenade", "Begin The Beguine", "In The Mood" oder "Little Brown Jug". Der besondere Clou: Valentine nahm die Session parallel zweimal auf. The operator needs to continually adjust the gap between each groove on the record; if the gaps between the groove are too small then the recording will be ruined as there won’t be enough depth in the groove for dynamics and stereo, and if the gaps are too great then you won’t fit four tracks on each side. Both LPs are excellent recordings, with frequency response and musicality showing off the true greatness of analogue. This is a truly good example of what an LP should be, and you will be able to decide for yourself which recording you feel is the best. For me, direct cut discs will always be my nirvana, and the extended frequency response and headroom on the 12″ plastic is apparent from the very start. This is a very special recording, and something I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending to hifi and music lovers alike. As Mike Valentine beautifully puts it “It’s better than sex, it’s wonderful.” HIFI Pig About a year ago, I created a direct cut recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (a truly remarkable slab of vinyl). We were lucky enough to receive some great press and have now sold over two thousand copies worldwide. This created the question of what to release next. I have always loved big band jazz and in particular, the music of Glen Miller, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman. After doing some research, one band in particular kept coming out on top. This was the Syd Lawrence Orchestra With a direct cut the band has to play live from the first to the last track on each side. Any mistakes and it is back to the beginning again. With all of their radio work and concert appearances, the band seemed to be ideally suited to the task. I therefore approached their leader, Chris Dean and explained what I would like to do. He was immediately excited with the idea of creating a record, as opposed to a CD, because a lot of the band’s followers have been asking when were they are going to release a vinyl record. Chris was also up for the challenge of the live recording approach. A direct cut record We contacted Air studios and I hired the same hall and technicians as I had used before on the Four Seasons recording. In particular, John Webber , the cutting engineer was again available, as was the same sound mixer Jake Jackson The day came round. We all arrived at the studio and the vinyl gods must have been smiling on us, because everything went well. We cut four tracks in the morning for side A and four tracks for side B in the afternoon. I always want to push the envelope, so decided to release the album as a double LP. The second LP to be created with a twenty four track two inch Studer tape recorder, running at 30 inches per second. This we mixed down to my half inch tape, again running at 30 IPS, which became the master tape from which the second record was cut. This means that one record will be the direct cut and the second a record of exactly the same session cut from the analogue tape version. People will therefore be able to compare these two techniques from exactly the same session, the direct cut, versus the more conventional analogue mix down and mastering version of events. Das werden dieselben Leute gewesen sein, die bei der Erwähnung Toots Thielemans umgehend an Seefahrer-Pseudoromantik dachten. Weil der eine Mundharmonika spielte und der andere einst mit putzigen Schlagern die Nummer Eins deutscher Wohnstuben-Gemütlichkeit war, haftete ihnen in Kreisen ältlicher, dafür um so fanatischer Puristen ein Gerüchlein an. Ramsey als ernsthafter Sänger, dazu noch Schublade JAZZ? Thielemans, naja, der Mann hatte schon mal mit OSCAR PETERSON gejazzt, aber ausgerechnet Mundharmonika? In Wahrheit waren beide, Thielemans wie Ramsey, längst international anerkannte Cracks. In ernsthaften Musikerkreisen kann Bill Ramsey ohne das abgestandene Image des Tanz-Bären auftreten, und er tat es mit den grössten Kollegen seines Fachs. Stars wie der deutsche Orchesterchef Peter Herbolzheimer oder sein britischer Kollege Stan Tracy rühmten den weisshaarigen Kleiderschrank eines ausgeprägten Jazz- und Blues-Feelings. Die Fans dieses "anderen" Bill Ramseys strömten in die kleinen Jazz-Keller, wenn sein Name auf den Plakaten stand. Thielemans hat es etwas leichter gehabt. Der Belgier, reiste sozusagen zweispännig durch die Musikgeschichte. Ob er zuerst lippen- oder fingerfertig war, wusste er selbst nicht mehr. Die beiden Karrieren auf Mundharmonika und Gitarre begannen etwa gleichzeitig. Als einfühlsamer Gitarrist war er sehr geachtet und geschätzt; die wahre Stärke aber waren jene 15 Zentimeter feinmechanischer Wunderarbeit, mit der man, dank winziger Luftkanälchen aus Holz und feinen Blechzungen, die in der Luft schwingen, Töne erzeugen kann: die Mundharmonika. Thielemans galt als weltbester, geradezu artistischer Dompteur diese Instruments, dem er mitunter Unglaubliches zu entlocken vermochte. Seine eher gehauchten Klangebilde, voller filigraner Schönheit, wurden schon früh von Stars wie Benny Goodman oder George Shearing, mit dem er über 5 Jahre zusammenarbeitete, hoch geschätzt. Leute wie die Jazzer Quincy Jones, Bill Evans oder erwähnter Oscar Peterson holten ihn ungezählte Male auf die Bühne oder ins Aufnahmestudio. Aber auch die Creme der POP-Asse wollte nicht aif Thielmanns Töne verzichten - Stammkunde war beispielsweise der US-Liedermacher Paul Simon. Viele Jahre lebten Thielemans und Ramsey wie die gewußten Königskinder: Sie wollten gern, konnten aber nicht zueinander finden. Diese Schallplatte wurde bereits 1973 geplant, besprochen und konkret verabredet, aber irgrndwas kam stetes dazwischen. In dieser Zeit wurden zahlreiche Konzepte verabschiedet und verworfen, bis sich Ramsey und Thielemans bei einem Treff 1979 in Berlin tief in die Augen sahen."Bill", meinte Toots, "jetzt machen wir´s". Toots organisierte die Begleit Crew, inernationale Profis der Szene, denen Musik in erster Linie Freude und nicht lästige Arbeit bedeutete. Aus Belgien kam Rob Franken, der auch die Arrangements schrieb. Er genoss den Ruf des unauffälligen Sidemans an den Keybords. Carmen McRae, Paul Desmond, Wes Montgomery oder Johnny Griffin nutzten Frankens dezente Technik mit Vorliebe. Der Schweizer Bassist Isla Eckinger, Jahrgang 1939, ist aus dem gleichen Holze; er hielt sich lieber im Hintergrund und strickte solide Bassfundamente, auf denen sich die Bosse aufbauen konnten. Dextere Gordon, Slide Hampton oder Stephane Grapelli schätzten die Meisterschaft des Eidgenossen. Über den Schlagzeuger Billy Brooks viele Worte zu verlieren, hieße letzlich Eulen nach Athen zu Tragen. Brooks wurde in den Staaten wegen seines wahrhaft unbestechlichen Rhythmusgefühls nahezu vergöttert. Er war noch in einem weiteren Punkt eine Ausnahmeerscheinung - die Kollegen vom Rock verehrten den farbigen Drummer ebenso wie die Männer vom Jazz. Wenn sich fünf Musik-Verrückte solchen Kalibers trafen, wurde die Atmosphäre hochexplosiv. Was Wunder, wenn das Quintett Zeit und Raum völlig vergaß und sich vollkommen der Musik ergab. Was in den Tagen der Produktion an Improvisationen eingefangen wurde, sind Kostbarkeiten musikalischer Sternstunden. Die schönsten Titel dieser Sessions finden sich auf der vorliegenden Schallplatte, die gut und gern ein Doppelalbum hätte sein dürfen. Sie entstammen sämtlich spontanen Ideen, und wurden von Pianist Franken mit behutsamen Fingerspitzengefühl zu musikalischen Perlen veredelt. Am Ende der drei Aufnahmetage, beim Abschied am Flughafen, war die Marschrichtung klar. Die fünf Männer, die nie zuvor miteinander musiziert hatten, verabredeten eine dauerhafte Zusammenarbeit. Die Ramsey-Thielemanny-Franken-Eckinger-Brooks-Band war Wirklichkeit geworden........................................................ ********************************************************************************************* ...............Herstellung einer Digitalaufnahme: Ein professioneller Videorecorder, nicht die normale Bandmaschine, ist Speichermedium der Musik. Im Prinzip mit dem gleichen Nachteil des Direktschnitts behaftet: Die Musiker dürfen keine Fehler machen. Der Vorteil: Nicht eine ganze Plattenseite muss in einem Durchgang gespielt werden, sondern immer nur ein Musikstück. Solange, bis es perfekt klingt. Dieses Digitalband besitzt eine fast 15fach höhere Speicherkapazität als ein Analogband. Das bringt höhere Dynamik. Außerdem besitzt das Band ein viel geringeres Eigenrauschen. Das macht die Pressungen in der Qualität den Direktschnitten vergleichbar. Der grösste Vorteil ist kommerziell: Vom Digitalband kann man (theoretisch) unbegrenzt Mutterfolien anfertigen, die der Direktschnitt nie und Half-Speed (aus Lizenzgründen) kaum erreicht. (Markus M.
