Auf vier 180 Gramm schweren, super sauber von Quality Records Pressings gefertigten Vinylscheiben erhört und erfühlt man einen völlig neuen Klang-Kosmos. Dafür sorgt das grandiose Mastering von Bernie Grundman aus Los Angeles, der für die 45-rpm-Ausgabe verantwortlich zeichnet, bzw. schneidet. Im aufwändig gefertigten Schuber stecken die Tip-on-Cover im alten Stil von Stoughton Printing. Das Besondere an diesem Soundbild ist die absolute Ruhe, die von den Aufnahmen ausgeht. Acoustic Sounds spricht von einem „dead-quiet 4LP set“. Was heißt das? Durch die Verteilung des Albums auf acht LP Seiten, die in 45-rpm drehen, werden Verzerrungen minimiert. Selbst die höchsten Höhen kommen in absoluter Grundruhe. Die klangliche Abbildung ist quasi so, als würde man sich die Künstler direkt in den Hörraum holen. Diese Edition ist eine mehr als gelungene Hommage an die Kompositionen von Tom Waits. Man höre sich nur „The Briar and the Rose“ von seinem 93er „The Black Rider“-Album an. Holly Coles aussdruckstark-empathische Stimme wird förmlich getragen von dem maximal kompakten Klangkörper der Bläser. Der Bass steht wie ein Fels in der Brandung. In ihrer Stimme ist so viel Emotion, dass man am liebsten den Plattenspieler in Endlosschleife stellen möchte, um in diesem Song zu zerfließen. Auch der intime Opener „Take Me Home“ bleibt durch das sparsame Arrangement von Coles zarter Stimme in Verbindung mit dem wundervoll melodisch-warmen Klavier von Davis im Hör-Gedächtnis. Spannend ist auch der „Train Song“, der von intelligent-kreativer Percussion-Begleitung lebt. „Invitation To The Blues“ kommt mit unbändiger Intensität. Auch hier steht Davis mit seinen Honky-Tonk-Piano-Figuren im musikalischen Mittelpunkt. Klasse auch, wie hier die perfekte Pressung jede einzelne Sound-Nuance dieses Instruments zum Vorschein bzw. Vorklang bringt. Ganz eindrucksvoll spürt man das auch bei „(Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night“. Baptistas Percussion erfüllt den ganzen Hörraum. Einfühlsam ist die E-Gitarre von Kevin Breit. Die Slide-Gitarren-schweben strahlend schön. Ein gelungener Kontrapunkt ist die Natürlichkeit der Akustik-Gitarre von Pitch und die der Mundharmonika von Levy. „Little Boy Blue“ beginnt mit einem knurrend-schnurrenden Kontrabass, der tief verwurzelt wie eine Wand im Zuhör-Zentrum steht. Den Anschlag der Saiten und das Gleiten über den Hals kann man körperlich nachfühlen. Das Bläser-Trio mit dem Alt-Saxophonisten Phil Dwyer, dem Bariton Saxophonisten Earl Seymour und dem Tenor-Saxophonisten Perry White harmoniert unauflöslich und kongenial. Die drei kreieren einen immensen Spannungsbogen. Dabei ist jedes Instrument feinzeichnend und räumlich präzise ortbar zu hören. Das MUSS man hören. Es ist ein unbeschreibliches Hör-Erlebnis. wb Das Album wurde von Bernie Grundman von den Original-Masterbändern gemastert und bei Quality Record Pressings auf 200 g schwerem Vinyl gepresst. Die LPs stecken in einer repräsentativen Box im dicken Karton. ******************************************************************************************* Rezension Holly Coles Verbeugung vor Tom Waits gehört sicherlich zu den schönsten und bestgelungenen Tribute-Alben überhaupt; schon allein die Songauswahl ist beachtlich und zeigt die intensive Beschäftigung der Sängerin mit Waits’ Werk als Songwriter. Die sparsamen (wenn nicht kargen) Arrangements sorgen ebenso für Gänsehaut wie Coles Stimme, die sich genauso auf’s Wesentliche konzentriert. Da ist kein Ton zuviel – Ein Minimalismus, der an die “Trinity Session” der Cowboy Junkies erinnert. Damit könnte die Frage auftauchen, ob “Temptation” nun Jazz ist – oder Pop, oder gar Folk. Doch darüber sollen Puristen streiten. We call our records made under these strict standards Ultra High Quality Records (UHQR). Most audiophiles would understand that the list of critical components in UHQR includes recording, mastering, plating, pressing and quality control. But some may stop short of considering the raw material used to make the record: the vinyl itself. We did some research and learned some interesting things about the history of the iconic black vinyl record. The most compelling revelation to us was the fact that LP vinyl is not black in its pure state. The off-white color of the record you are about to listen to is the color of raw vinyl in its purest form (un-tinted vinyl). The black color you're used to seeing is a colorant called "carbon black" that was part of the original compound formulation used in old shellac records. As vinyl compound replaced shellac-based compound, carbon black continued to be used as a colorant. We've expected our records to be black ever since. To make the ultimate record, we decided to enhance sound quality by removing anything we believed could detract from it. Record styli vibrate (or jitter) on a microscopic level, and any particles of carbon black pigment that happen to be on the surface of the groove could introduce surface noise. By not adding carbon black to our Clarity Vinyl, we eliminate the possibility of noise contamination due to carbon black particles. Most audiophiles would understand that the list of critical components in UHQR includes recording, mastering, plating, pressing and quality control. But some may stop short of considering the raw material used to make the record: the vinyl itself. We did some research and learned some interesting things about the history of the iconic black vinyl record. The most compelling revelation to us was the fact that LP vinyl is not black in its pure state. The off-white color of the record you are about to listen to is the color of raw vinyl in its purest form (un-tinted vinyl). Und keine Frage: In unserem Forum dVinyl ein ganz selbstverständliches Highlight. Die innenliegende LP kommen in Clarity Vinyl, frei von jedem Rußpigment, um auch nur jede kleinste Verunreinigung zu vermeiden. Die Scheibe dreht ihre Runden souverän in 33 1/3 rpm. Die UHQR-(Ultra High Quality Record) Pressungen sind der Maßstab aller Sound-Dinge. Editionen aus dieser Serie werden auf besonders geräuscharmem „Super Vinyl“ gepresst. Die LPs werden dabei nicht in herkömmlichen Plattenhüllen, sondern wie ein Box-Set in einem Karton konfektioniert. Wegen der hohen Pressqualität und den kleinen Auflagen mit einem nummerierten Zertifikat, sind diese Veröffentlichungen unmittelbar nach dem Erscheinen gesuchte und hochpreisige Sammlerstücke. Gepresst wird manuell mit einer Finebilt-Pressmaschine, bei der akribisch auf jedes feinstes Detail geachtet wird. Die 200-Gramm-Schallplatten weisen dabei das gleiche flache Profil auf, das die ursprünglichen UHQRs so begehrenswert gemacht hat. Von der Einlaufrille bis zur Auslaufrille ist das Profil plan, so dass die Abtastnadel des Plattenspielers wirklich senkrecht zu den Rillen von der Einlaufrille bis zur Mitte steht. Und nur absolut makellose Exemplare kommen nach individueller Prüfung per Hand auf den Markt. Jede UHQR wird in einer Deluxe-Box verpackt und enthält ein Booklet, in dem der gesamte Herstellungsprozess einer UHQR beschrieben wird mit einem handsignierten Zertifikat der Inspektion. Diese Edel-Edition wird natürlich auch der genialen Musik dieser am meistverkauften Jazz-LP auch mehr als gerecht. Eingespielt wurde die Scheibe von der sagenumwobenen Quintett-Besetzung Miles Davis an der Trompete, John Coltrane am Tenor-Saxophon, Julian Adderley am Alt-Saxophon, Bill Evans und Wynton Kelly (nur bei „Freddie Freeloader“) am Piano, Paul Chambers am Bass, James Cobb am Schlagzeug. Das musikalisch höchst spannende „So What“ eröffnet die LP. Kontrabass und Piano spielen das prägnante Thema ein, das dann von den Bläsern aufgenommen wird. James „Jimmy“ Cobb lässt sein Schlagwerk so souverän erklingen, dass man sich der Magie nicht entziehen kann. Von den Aufnahmen geht eine unnachahmliche Grundruhe aus. Die analoge Wärme ist in jedem einzelnen Ton spürbar. Dem angeregten Dialog zwischen Saxophon und Trompete zuzuhören, macht richtig Freude. Ein absolutes Highlight im Highlight ist „All Blues“. Das Stück basiert auf einem 12-Takt-Bluesschema. Jedoch ist die Komposition kein klassischer Blues, da er im 6/8-Takt gespielt wird. Als so bezeichneter Jazzblues zeigt das Lied beeindruckend die Beeinflussung des Jazz durch den Blues, der Mutter aller Musik. Davis arbeitete ein halbes Jahr an der Komposition. Erst auf dem Weg ins Studio beschloss Davis das Stück nicht im geraden Takt, sondern als Walzer zu spielen. Dies zu erhören und in dieser audiophilen Highend-Qualität erleben zu dürfen ist schon gigantisch. Auch an den weiteren Liedern wie „Flamenco Sketches“, „Freddie Freeloader“ und „Blue In Green“ kann man sich schier nicht satthören. Miles Dewey Davis III. wurde am 26. Mai 1926 in Alton, Illinois, USA, geboren. Er verstarb am 28. September 1991 in Santa Monica, Kalifornien, USA. Der Jazz-Trompeter, Flügelhornist, Komponist und Bandleader war einer der herausragendsten und einflussreichsten Jazzmusiker des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ursprünglich war er einer der Revolutionäre der Bebop-Bewegung. Danach beeinflusste er maßgeblich die Entwicklung unterschiedlicher Jazz-Stile wie Cool Jazz, Hard Bop, modalen Jazz und Jazzrock. „Kind of Blue“ war Davis 22. Studioalbum. All Blues ********************************************************************************************* Rezension: Es ist das legendäre 1995er Bernie Grundman-Mastering, das für diese Luxus-Ausgabe des vielleicht definitiven Jazz-Albums überhaupt gewählt wurde: Die damalige Classic Records-Wiederauflage setzte nicht nur neue Maßstäbe in Sachen Klang, sondern korrigierte auch endlich den Geschwindigkeitsfehler aller bisherigen Vinylausgaben (einer zu langsam laufenden Bandmaschine bei den Sessions zu verdanken). Die Pressung auf klarem Vinyl folgt dem technischen Prinzip der UHQR-Reihe von Classic Records, wie jene wird auf einer handgesteuerten Finebilt-Maschine gepreßt (der Prozess wird im luxuriösen Booklet ausführlich erläutert). Die Auflage von 25.000 Stück dürfte manchen Sammler die Brauen hochziehen lassen; aber die Nachfrage nach Edel-Vinyl ist nicht nur in den USA im letzten Jahr sprunghaft gestiegen: Einmal mehr ist es alles andere als selbstverständlich, daß ein Analogue Productions-Produkt ausreichend nach Europa kommt. The UHQR offers the blackest, quietest backgrounds and unparalleled transparency, but more critically, the modified Finebuilt hand press produces unprecedented transient precision and instrumental focus and resolves low level details that will deliver surprises to even the most blasé KOB veteran, one of whom visited and exclaimed “I’ve never heard that before”. From the lead-in groove to the run-out groove, there is no pitch to the profile, allowing the customer's stylus to play truly perpendicular to the grooves from edge to center. Clarity Vinyl allows for the purest possible pressing and the most visually stunning presentation. Every UHQR will be hand inspected upon pressing completion, and only the truly flawless will be allowed to go to market. Each UHQR will be packaged in a deluxe box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection. This will be a truly deluxe, collectible product. Kind of Blue is more than Miles Davis's most enduring recording, it's a testament to Miles' experimental approach, drastically simplifying modern jazz by returning to melody unlike the chord complexity more often heard at the time. "The music has gotten thick," Davis complained in a 1958 interview for The Jazz Review. "... There will be fewer chords but infinite possibilities as to what to do with them." Kind of Blue is, in a sense, all melody — and atmosphere. None of the musicians had played any of the tunes before heading into the first of two recording sessions in early spring of 1959. In fact Miles had written out the settings for most of them only a few hours before the session. Miles also stuck to his old recording procedure of having virtually no rehearsal and only one take for each tune. Miles remained proud of the album, performing at least two of its tracks — "So What" and "All Blues" — for years after, until his musical path took him in a different direction. History was on the side of Kind of Blue; it was born in 1959, at the peak of the golden age of high-fidelity, featuring innovations in studio equipment (magnetic tape, high-quality condenser microphones), matched by advancements in home audio reproduction (long-player records — LPs; high-end turntables, and other stereo components). Kind of Blue also benefited from Miles' being signed to the leading major record company of the day — Columbia Records, a part of the CBS media conglomerate. Columbia had the means and wisdom to invest in cutting edge recording technology, and their own professional recording studio. A minor audio complication with Kind of Blue has been addressed with this UHQR edition. The motor on the studio's 3-track master recorder was running slowly the day of the album's first session. This speed issue affected the album's first three tracks, "So What," "Freddie Freeloader" and "Blue in Green," making them a barely perceptible quarter-tone sharp.This issue was finally addressed with the Classic Records reissue in 1995. This UHQR was pressed from the same parts that Bernie Grundman cut directly from the original 3-track masters for Classic in '95. Sixty years have passed; this LP bridges that time span in the best way possible, struck from the master reel of Kind of Blue, free of speed issues and replete with all the instrumental detail, sonic environment and minimal noise. When Rastaman Vibration was first released in America in 1976 it did what some in the music industry considered nearly impossible at the time. It took Bob Marley into the Top Ten alongside disco records and corporate rock, points out Rolling Stone, which rates the album 4 stars. Despite the good cheer of the title track and the upbeat "Roots, Rock, Reggae," Rastaman Vibration contains some of Marley's most intense images of oppression, paranoia and despair. Tracks such as "Who the Cap Fit," "Crazy Baldhead" and "War" are offered by the Wailers with dire urgency as Marley's brutal visions are echoed by his own church choir, the I-Threes. More than four decades later, neither Marley's music nor his message has lost its sting. Now, Analogue Productions presents perfection — Rastaman Vibration in UHQR format on Clarity Vinyl. The singer's Natty Dread album featured one of his strongest batches of original material (the first compiled after the departure of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer) and delivered Top 40 hit "No Woman No Cry." The follow-up Live set, a document of Marley's appearance at London's Lyceum, found the singer conquering England as well. Upon completing the tour, Marley and his band returned to Jamaica, laying down the tracks for Rastaman Vibration (1976) at legendary studios run by Harry Johnson and Joe Gibbs. At the mixing board for the sessions were Sylvan Morris and Errol Thompson, Jamaican engineers of the highest caliber. Of the material on Rastaman Vibration, "War," for one, remains one of the most stunning statements of the singer's career. Though it is essentially a straight reading of one of Haile Selassie's speeches, Marley phrases the text exquisitely to fit a musical setting, a quiet intensity lying just below the surface. Hier gibt es keine Füller, sondern nur Weltklasse-Songs, die den Spannungsbogen, die Raffinesse, die kreative Genialität im Fokus haben und gleichzeitig sehr eingängig und voll maximalem Gefühl sind. Als es im November 1972 erschien, war es ein kommerzieller Erfolg und erreichte Platz 17 der Billboard-Charts. Es ist insoweit zwingend, dass diese Schallplatte mit einer ultimativen audiophilen Edition geehrt wird. Die 45 RPM LP-Veröffentlichung ist limitiert auf 20.000 nummerierte Exemplare. Sie wurden direkt vom Original-Masterband gemastert von Bernie Grundman. Gepresst wurde bei Quality Record Pressings in 200-Gramm-Clarity-Vinyl-Qualität. Dabei werden maximal 1.000 Exemplare von einem Stamper hergestellt. Allein die Box ist ein ästhetisch-wertiger Genuss. Sie kommt mit Strukturcover, Goldprägedruck und verkleinerter Originalcoverabbildung. Es hat insgesamt die Anmutung eines alten Buches, respektive einer Vintage-Tonband-Hülle. Ein 4-Seiten-Text mit Fotos erläutert den Pressvorgang. Außerdem gibt es ein weiteres Faltblatt im LP-Format mit Hintergrundinfos. Natürlich ist auch das Original-Klappcover in Hochglanz-Optik beigelegt. Es zeigt eine Fotomontage aus einer Reihe von Prostituierten, einem rot geschminkten weiblichen Mund und weiteren Zutaten. Anekdote am Rande: In Spanien unter Francisco Franco durfte das Cover so nicht erscheinen. Es wurde durch ein Bandfoto ersetzt. Die 2 LPs stecken in speziellen High-Quality-Kunststoff-Innenhüllen. Gestartet wird mit dem, auch als Hitsingle ausgekoppelten, Song „Do It Again“. Der Hörraum wird mit jedem Kubikzentimeter Musik erfüllt. Der Klang ist warm und wirklich druckvoll. Jedes einzelne Instrument und die Gesangsstimme (n) sind final feinzeichnend. Das hört man beeindruckend bei Denny Dias elektrischer Sitar und bei dem Keyboard-Solo von Donald Fagen. Weiter geht's mit „Dirty Work“. Ein warmer Orgelsound empfängt uns. Der Song hat eine einprägsame Hookline. Drummer Jim Hodder ist in perfekt groovender Harmonie mit Basser Walter Becker. „Kings“ ist ein cooler midtempo Rocksong mit einem tollen E-Gitarren-Solo von Elliot Randall. Der zweite E-Gitarrist Jeff Baxter brilliert bei „Midnite Cruiser“. Ein sehr positives Gefühl versprüht „Only A Fool Would Say That“ mit schönen Oktav-Gitarren-Licks im Stile von Wes Montgomery. Dem 10-Track zu lauschen ist ein wirklicher Hochgenuss. Die restlichen fünf Seite der Original B-Seite müssen Sie selbst erkunden, erkunden, neu entdecken, neu erspüren und immer wieder Freude daran haben. In wenigen Wochen stellten Walter Becker und Donald Fagen ein längst klassisches Pop-Meisterwerk auf die Beine – eine bis dahin nicht dagewesene Verbindung von Pop, Rock, Country und Jazz (wobei der Anteil des Letzteren hier noch nicht so hoch war wie auf späteren LPs) in einer Perfektion, die die Produktionszeit unglaubwürdig erscheinen läßt. Neben der bemerkenswerten Souveränität, was die Beherrschung der Instrumente betrifft, war und ist das Wichtigste an dem Album freilich das Songwriting: Meisterstücke wie “Do It Again”, “Dirty Work” oder “Midnight Cruiser” ließen keinen Zweifel daran, daß hier ein Kreativteam am Start war, das es mit den Allergrößten aufnehmen konnte! – Die UHQR-Ausgabe, von Bernie Grundman vom Originalband gemastert und wie gewohnt im aufwendig gestalteten Schuber präsentiert, sollte für lange Zeit das letzte Wort in Sachen Klangqualität sein! ******************************************************************************************* Mit Steely Dan verbinden sich vor allem zwei Namen: Donald Fagen und Walter Becker. Beide hatten bereits Ende der 60er Jahre am College gemeinsam in verschiedenen Bands ähnliche musikalische Vorlieben entdeckt und sich in der Folge als Song-Writer-Duo betätigt, ehe ihnen dann 1972 der Durchbruch mit Steely Dan (der Name geht auf William Burroughs Roman The Naked Lunch zurück) und dem Debüt-Album der Band, Can't Buy A Thrill, gelang. Das Album hielt sich über ein Jahr in den Billboard Charts, und der Single-Auskopplung Do It Again gelang mühelos der Sprung in die Top Ten. Steely Dans Platin-gekröntes Debüt-Studioalbum "Can't Buy A Thrill", das im November 1972 erschien, war ein kommerzieller Erfolg und erreichte Platz 17 der Billboard-Charts. Später erschien es auf vielen professionellen Listen der besten Alben, darunter Colin Larkins All Time Top 1000 Albums (2000) und die "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" der Zeitschrift Rolling Stone (2003). Steely Dan's second studio album, originally released in 1973 by ABC Records, was certified gold-selling by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling 500,000 copies in the U.S. Founded by core members Walter Becker (bass) and Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards), Steely Dan's popularity rose throughout the late 1970s on, and their seven albums throughout that period of time blended elements of jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop.
