Doch gemach, wir möchten hier Mosaic ausdrücklich zu diesem kapitalen Set gratulieren, welches einen extrem hohen discographischen Wert hat und jeden Besitzer um ein bereits ein halbes Jahrhundert altes Rpertoire bereichert! Die Liste der Stars vergangener Zeiten aufzulisten, würde den Rahmen dieser Zeilen bei weitem sprengen. Es sind hier viele Künstler dabei, die erst später berühmt wurden: Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Giuffre, Clark Terry, Max Roach, J. J. Johnson oder auch Lionel Hampton! Einige berühmte Musiker(-innen) wie Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Illinois Jacquet oder Billie May sind zu dieser Zeit bereits sehr erfolgreich gewesen. Der musikalische Inhalt ist ebenso umfangreich wie die Zahl der insgesamt 254 (!) Tracks dokumentiert: Es swingt an allen Ecken. Doch es sind alle Elemente jener Zeit enthalten: Dixie, Blues, New Orleans, Boogie, Latin, Folklore und jede Menge Unterhaltungsmusik! Klanglich dürfte dieses Boxenset so manchen überraschen. Es besteht kein Zweifel, dass Mosaic Records still und leise einige der wichtigsten Jazz-Performances herausgebracht hat, die jemals auf Vinyl-Schallplatten und / oder CD-Platten aufgenommen wurden. Viele der Mosaic-Sets haben einen "mythischen" Status erreicht und werden von Jazz-Fans, Audiophilen und Musiksammlern sehr geschätzt. In der Tat, ihre Sets sind erstklassig in Bezug auf Produktionsqualität, Leistungen gewählt, Libretto Informationen und Sound! And in addition a music whose style does not fit in our time, which knows with increasingly gigantic superlatives, fits. But, by the way, we would like to congratulate Mosaic expressly on this capital set, which has an extremely high discographic value and enriches every owner with an already half a century old rpertoire! Listing the list of stars of bygone times would go far beyond the scope of these lines. There are many artists here who became famous later: Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Giuffre, Clark Terry, Max Roach, J.J. But they're all excellent examples of the kinetic, fire-breathing free jazz he initially pursued after leaving Ornette Coleman's group, and they succeeded in establishing him as a formidable composer, bandleader, and theorist in his own right -- not just Ornette's trusty sidekick. Over the course of two discs or three LPs, Mosaic's The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Don Cherry collects the three albums that marked the trumpeter/cornetist's first efforts as a leader -- Complete Communion, Symphony for Improvisers, and Where Is Brooklyn. The first and last were quartet sessions featuring Gato Barbieri and Pharoah Sanders, respectively, while Symphony assembled a gloriously visceral septet that included both tenorists. It and Complete Communion were the most successful efforts, integrating Cherry's originals into several side-long medleys that allowed the group to keep improvising without breaking its momentum or concentration. Compositionally, Cherry also proved himself no slouch; the "Complete Communion" suite later became a favored playground for Ken Vandermark's DKV Trio, which revived the piece in the late '90s. Johnson, recorded prolifically as a leader from 1957-1962. I hear only one outright wrong note choice or mistake by him in the three CDs (in the final chorus of “I’ve Got A Crush On You”) and a miniscule percentage of the fluffs and near misses that any player experiences in the course of spontaneous creation. Few improvisers who take Jones’ kind of risks could match that consistency. During the last 20 years of his life Thad Jones relegated his playing to second or third place behind his writing and band leading. His soloing could be as magnificent as ever, but several of his colleagues use the same phrase, “like pulling teeth,” when they talk about what it took to get him to pick up his horn. Inhaltlich handelt es sich also um Aufnahmen mit der Besetzung des New Miles Quintet, das eine Wende in der Schaffensperiode von Miles Davis darstellt. Die Abkehr vom traditionellen Bopschema hin zu spannungsgeladenen Formen, bei denen das Saxophon oder die Trompete nicht mehr im Vordergrund stehen, ließen Stücke von ungeheuerer Intensität und zugleich entspannten Rhythmen entstehen. Subtile Finessen und wunderschön präsentierte Soli lassen selbst ein 18-minütiges Stück wie "Two Faced" wie im Fluge vergehen. After his classic solo made "Flying Home" a major hit for Lionel Hampton in 1942, Jacquet spent time with Cab Calloway's band, was a sensation with Jazz at the Philharmonic, and was featured as a star soloist with Count Basie. In 1946, Jacquet went out on his own and his combo (ranging from six to eight pieces) was extremely popular, featuring its leader's hard-swinging solos which utilized a liberal amount of honks and screams. The first real R&B tenorman, Illinois Jacquet was always a much more well-rounded soloist than the specialists who followed him. The 17 sessions that are included on this essential box draws its material from the Aladdin, Apollo, ARA, Savoy, and Victor catalogues. Some of the music has been readily available in recent years, but this is the best way to acquire the swinging performances. Among Jacquet's most notable sidemen are trumpeters Joe Newman, Emmett Berry (who was actually the leader of one of these dates), Russell Jacquet (who also contributes some bluish vocals), and Fats Navarro (who solos on one song); trombonists Henry Coker, Trummy Young, and J.J. Natürlich wurden hierfür die Original Analog-Tapes verwendet, man hört es! Mosaic hat dabei die Reihenfolge der Stücke belassen, so wie sie die Musiker gespielt haben. Besonders hervorzuheben ist bei einigen Stücken das Wechselspiel von Miles Davis und Wynton Kelly, was zu wunderbaren, spannenden Passagen führte. Überhaupt schien das Quintett extrem gut aufgelegt zu sein, die Vitalität und das feinfühlige Spiel besonders bei ruhigeren, swingenden Sets beeindruckt uns auch nach über 40 Jahren! In general, the quintet seemed to be in a very good mood, the vitality and the sensitive playing, especially with quieter, swinging sets impressed us even after more than 40 years!
