Aufnahmejahr: 1959
Als Wunderkind performte er bereits mit 10 Jahren das hochvirtuose 1. Violinkonzert von Henryk Wieniawski, debütierte mit 13 an der Carnegie Hall und machte mit 14 seine ersten Aufnahmen für Columbia. Michael Rabin galt als eines der größten Talente der Klassikszene bis er 1972 im Alter von nur 35 Jahren verstarb. Bis dahin hatte er in der Zeit zwischen 1950 und 1959 zahlreiche virtuose Meisterwerke aufgenommen.
"Mosaics" zeigt Rabin mit vielseitigen klassischen Werken aus ganz Europa in denen er in unterschiedlichen Stilen und Techniken meisterhaft brilliert. Begleitet wird er von Leon Pommers am Piano. Die beiden Künstler spielen u.a. Bearbeitungen von Chopins Nocturne Op. 27, Kreislers Version von Wieniawskis Caprice a-Moll, Debussys "La plus que lente", Elgars "La Capricieuse", Ravels "Piece en forme de habanera" und Prokofieffs Marsch aus "Love for Three Oranges". Kontrastreich und nuancensicher geleitet uns das Ausnahmetalent durch die unterschiedlichen Stücke und beweist sein hohes Maß an Virtuosität und Talent.

Rezension:
Trotz seiner gänzlich unbegleiteten Aufnahmen von Bach, Ysaÿe und Paganini: Allzu wenig kammermusikalische Zeugnisse gibt es von diesem enigmatischen Virtuosen. Auf dieser LP – vielleicht seiner schönsten überhaupt – wird er jedoch nur von Leon Pommers am Klavier begleitet, und in diesem intimen Rahmen scheint sich sein so unbeschreibbar schmelzender Ton besser denn je entfalten zu können. Die technischen Wunder (etwa die langen Doppelgriffpassagen in der eröffnenden Chopin-Bearbeitung von August Wilhelmij) nimmt man kaum wahr, Rabin erfüllt die virtuosen Zugabenstücke, aus denen dieses Programm zusammengestellt ist, mit so viel Leben und Musikalität, daß sie nebensächlich wirken. (Zwingt man sich freilich, auf sie zu achten, wird man schnell blaß ob Rabins Leistung.) In unserer nüchternen, technisierten Welt wäre für einen solchen Meister romantischer Klangschönheit kein Platz mehr: Einen Musiker wie Michael Rabin wird es in absehbarer Zeit nicht wieder geben. Despite its entirely unaccompanied recordings of Bach, Ysaÿe and Paganini: Too little chamber music products are available from this enigmatic virtuoso. On this LP - perhaps his most beautiful at all - he is, however, only accompanied by Leon Pommers at the piano, and in this intimate setting his tone, so indescribably melting, seems to unfold better than ever before. The technical miracles (such as the long double-grip passages in the opening Chopin adaptation of August Wilhelmi) are hardly taken, Rabin fulfills the virtuoso additions of the program, which compose this program, with so much life and musicality that they have a secondary effect. (In fact, if you make sure you pay attention to them, you will soon be pale, whether it is Rabin's performance.) In our sober, technically-oriented world, such a master of romantic sound beauty would no longer be a place for a musician like Michael Rabin to return in the foreseeable future .

Erstausgabe mit bisher unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen von 1961.
Eine der letzten Aufnahmen des amerikanischen Ausnahme-Violinisten Michael Rabin war die 1959 unter dem Titel "Mosaic" erschienene Sammlung beliebter Zugabenstücke. Kurz danach beschloss Rabin aus unbekannten Gründen, keine Plattenaufnahmen mehr zu machen und betrat bis zu seinem Unfalltod im Jahr 1972 kein Tonstudio mehr. Vielleicht wurde aus den gleichen unbekannten Gründen die 1961 entstandene Aufnahme 10 weiterer virtuoser Zugabenstücke nicht veröffentlicht - bis jetzt. Denn nun gibt es diese wundervollen Aufnahmen endlich auf dem Markt unter dem passenden Titel "Mosaics Volume 2". Rabin spielt hier, begleitet von Pianist Brooks Smith, einige wunderbare Arrangements berühmter klassischer Stücke, darunter etwa Chopins Nocturne in Es-Dur, de Fallas Spanischer Tanz No. 1 oder Debussys "La Fille Aux Cheveaux De Lin". Hinter den Arrangements stehen meist große Namen wie Fritz Kreisler oder Pablo de Sarasate. Rabins wunderbarer Bel-Canto-Klang und die temperamentvolle Stück-Auswahl machen diese Platte zu einem enorm kurzweiligen und mitreißenden Vergnügen. Schade, dass sie knappe 50 Jahre in den Archiven schlummern musste.
Klanglich großartig mit mustergültig ruhigem Vinyl. So macht Vinylhören erst richtig Spass!

Rezension:
Suchen Sie nicht nach einem Original: Es gibt keines. Dies hier ist eine violinistische Sensation ersten Ranges – leider ist wenig über die Hintergründe bekannt: Es scheint, als ob der psychisch instabile Musiker nach 1959 doch noch einmal ein Studio besuchte und für Capitol 1961 eine zweite Sammlung mit zehn Zugabenstücken einspielte, die aus unerfindlichen Gründen nie veröffentlicht wurde und im Archiv verschwand. Wie dieser Schatz wieder ans Tageslicht kam, ist nicht bekannt – die Testament-Veröffentlichung, liebevoll im Stil einer 1961er Capitol-LP gehalten, ist jedenfalls die Erstausgabe dieser Pretiosen. Und um solche handelt es sich. Man hat oft bedauert, daß der neben Heifetz (dessen Stammpianist Brooks Smith hier den Klavierpart übernimmt) wohl genialste Geiger des 20. Jahrhunderts so viel Energie für sogenanntes Virtuosen-Repertoire aufwandte. Natürlich hätte man gerne gewußt, wie Rabin eine Bach-Partita oder eine Beethovensonate gestaltet hätte, aber: Niemand, wohl nicht einmal Kreisler oder Heifetz, haben diese "Schaustücke" derart souverän in musikalisches Gold verwandelt. Die technischen Schwierigkeiten treten auch hier hinter die Musik zurück – Rabins Ton verzaubert vom ersten Moment an, wenn er zu Kreislers Bearbeitung des zweiten "Ungarischen Tanzes" Antonin Dvoraks ansetzt. Do not search for an original: There are none. This is a violinist sensation of the first rank - unfortunately, little is known about the background: it seems as if the psychically unstable musician after 1959 yet once again a studio visited and for Capitol 1961 a second collection with ten entrances played, for unimaginable reasons Never published and disappeared in the archive. How this treasure got back to light is not known - the testament publication, affectionately held in the style of a 1961 Capitol LP, is in any case the first edition of these prizes. And that is the point. It has often been regretted that, in addition to Heifetz (whose stammpianist Brooks Smith takes over the piano part here), the most brilliant violinist of the twentieth century spent so much energy on so-called virtuoso repertoire.
Of course, one would have liked to know how Rabin had designed a Bach-Partita or a Beethoven singer, but no one, probably not even a Kreisler or Heifetz, turned these "darlings" so confidently into musical gold. The technical difficulties are also behind the music here - Rabin's tone enchants from the very first moment when he begins to work on Kreisler's work on the second "Hungarian Dance" of Antonin Dvorak. Special highlights are William Kroll's "Banjo And Fiddle", Sarasates "Introducción y Tarantela", the Joseph Achron transcription of Schumann's "Vogel as Prophet" from his piano cycle "Waldzenzen" and one by Sarasate Arranged the violin composition of Chopin's E Minor Nocturne, whose fusion and intensity actually excluded the idea that the piece was not originally written for violin. 25 years old Michael Rabin was at these probably final recordings. Once more, the loss they too soon ended career means hard to estimate.
In 1950, when Michael Rabin made his official debut with the Philharmonic in his native New York City, conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos spoke of him as "the violin genius of tomorrow." Sadly, although Rabin acquired a reputation as a coruscating virtuoso, his death in 1972, at age 35, prevented the full blooming of his talent. Among his celebrated recordings for the Capitol label was a 1959 album of encore pieces titled Mosaics; and his last Capitol sessions in 1961 were devoted to a second sequence of 10 pieces, with Brooks Smith — best remembered as Jascha Heifetz's accompanist — at the piano. For reasons unrelated to the quality of the playing or the recordings, this second anthology was never released, but EMI Testament is proud to present it now.

Seine besondere Begabung für das Werk des legendären Genueser Virtuosen hatte der junge Musiker längst bewiesen: Eine Auswahl der 24 Capricen war bereits 1950 erschienen. Da war Rabin 14, ein Jahr später spielte er das erste Violinkonzert in der Carnegie Hall. Zum Zeitpunkt dieser Schallplattenaufnahme war er 19, und damals wie heute fasziniert vor allem, daß ein so junger Mensch eben nicht der Versuchung erliegt, die für die Bewältigung der Partitur erforderliche, mörderische Spieltechnik in den Vordergrund zu stellen – sondern im Gegenteil diese praktisch verschwinden zu lassen zugunsten reiner Musikalität. Mit solchem Esprit, mit solchem Gefühl für die melodische Sprache Paganinis hat man dieses Konzert kaum jemals wieder gehört. Ein echtes Gegenstück zu dessen Klangcharakter ist das einzige Violinkonzert Alexander Glasunows. Doch auch hier erweist sich Rabin als äußerst einfühlsamer Interpret, legt sich in die typisch russischen, hochromantischen Gesangslinien des Violinparts. Seine außerordentliche Technik zeigt sich insbesondere – doch auch hier in völlig unaufdringlicher Art – in der die beiden Sätze verbindenden Kadenz, die man sofort noch einmal hören möchte… – Auch diese Testament-Reissue glänzt mit verblüffendem Mono-Klang! Michael Rabin - er gab schon in früher Jugend hochvirtuose Stücke zum Besten - zählt zu den bedeutendsten Violinisten auf der ganzen Welt. Er setzte sich mit anspruchsvollen Violinwerken von Alexander Glasunov und Nicolo Paganini auseinander: Hervorragend führt Rabin seinen Bogen und entlockt seiner Violine himmlische Töne. Das "Violinkonzert in D-Dur (Op.82)" von Glasunov und das "Violinkonzert No.1 in D-Dur" (Op.6) von Paganini sind Paradebeispiele für seine Fingerfertigkeit und sein musikalisches Verständnis. Eine sehr agogische und melodiöse Interpretation dieser beiden prachtvollen Werke, die Rabin auf diesem Album abliefert.

Hailed as a child prodigy, his talent matured gracefully into an adult level, but he failed to follow in his emotional growth, resulting in a cutting short of his career. He never reached the age of 36, yet remains one of the most fondly remembered of virtuoso violinists for listeners and fellow musicians. In the 1950s, Rabin signed with Capitol-EMI, for which he recorded the most important part of his legacy, including the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major and the Glazounov Violin Concerto in A Minor.

Als Wunderkind betitelt, performte Michael Rabin bereits mit 10 Jahren das hochvirtuose 1.Violinkonzert von Henryk Wieniawski, debütierte mit 13 an der Carnegie Hall und machte mit 14 seine ersten Aufnahmen für Columbia. Er war eines der größten Talente der Klassikszene, 1972 im Alter von nur 35 Jahren verstarb. Unter den zahlreichen virtuosen Meisterwerken, die er zwischen 1950 und 1959 aufnahm, ist auch das einzige „Violinkonzert in D-Dur, Op.35“ vom russischen Komponisten Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowski. Nach der Fertigstellung 1878 sollte Solist Leopold Auer die Uraufführung spielen, der es aber für unspielbar hielt. So kam es, dass das Stück erst am 4.Dezember 1879 durch Adolph Brodsky und den Wiener Philharmonikern uraufgeführt wurde. Meisterhaft brilliert Rabin auch bei Camille Saint-Saens „Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op.28“. Mit viel musikalischem Verständnis und herausragender Fingerfertigkeit liefert er zwei sehr agogische und melodiöse Interpretationen ab.

Michael Rabin managed to be one of the most talented and tragic violin virtuosi of his generation. Hailed as a child prodigy, his talent matured gracefully into an adult level, but he failed to follow in his emotional growth, resulting in a cutting short of his career. He never reached the age of 36, yet remains one of the most fondly remembered of virtuoso violinists for listeners and fellow musicians. In the 1950s, Rabin signed with Capitol-EMI, for which he recorded the most important part of his legacy.
he draft of Kogan-Up One looks in vain certainly - but what lies down for a performance Rabin here! It is also the geigeric glorious moments that characterize this recording in 1957. In the overall picture, other major recordings from the same era (Heifetz, Campoli, Ricci, Oistrakh, or Francescatti) are more conclusive (Rabin showed a little later His Mendelssohn recording).
But the cadence of the first movement and, of course, the furious final are the hours of the violin, a high-romantic virtuoso of the Paganini tradition that no longer exists today and whose last outstanding representative was probably Michael Rabin. Camille Saint-Saëns's "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso" is also the not so secret main feature of this LP:
Rarely has one heard the neckbreaker arpeggios of this show piece with so much pleasure and verve as here, and here is also - besides his always stupendous technique - Rabin's great musical understanding of this particular type of music

Ein russisches Plädoyer für Schubert! Mit einem erlesenen Ensemble – erwähnen muß man auf jeden Fall Klarinettist Vladimir Solokin und den überragenden Hornisten Jacob Shapiro! – führt David Oistrach durch dieses gerne unterschätzte Meisterwerk, mit dem der Komponist nach längerer diesbezüglicher Auszeit zur Kammermusik zurückfand. "Wärme" und "Seele" sind wohl die Begriffe, die diese mustergültige Einspielung vor allem auszeichnen… Wie gut die 1956er Aufnahme ist, ließen frühere Pressungen – auch echte UK-Originale – kaum erahnen: Der volle, direkte Klang läßt Stereo-Technik in keiner Sekunde vermissen! Dass Schubert sein Oktett F-Dur, eines der heitersten und bestgelaunten Kammermusik-Werke überhaupt, 1824 in einer Zeit schwerster gesundheitlicher Probleme und großer Depression geschrieben hat, allein in seinem Zimmer fastend, mag man kaum glauben. Doch es passt zu Schuberts nimmermüdem Genius, dass er sich den Weg aus einer siebenjährigen Schaffenskrise bewusst mit diesem frischen und scheinbar unbeschwerten Werk erkämpfte. Diese Einspielung von 1958 entstand mit acht versierten russischen Musikern, unter denen David Oistrach an der 1. Violine sicher der bekannteste ist. Besonders hervorzuheben ist aber auch Vladimir Sorokin, der den bewusst auffallenden Klarinetten-Part (Schuberts Auftraggeber, Ferdinand Graf Troyer, war selbst Amateur-Klarinettist und spielte den Part auch in der Uraufführung) mit warmem Klang und tänzerischer Eleganz meistert.

It is hard to believe that Schubert wrote his octet in F major, one of the most cheerful and cheerful chamber music works of all, in 1824 at a time of severe health problems and great depression, fasting alone in his room. But it fits Schubert's tireless genius that he consciously fought his way out of a seven-year creative crisis with this fresh and seemingly carefree work. This recording from 1958 was made with eight accomplished Russian musicians, among whom David Oistrakh is probably the best known on the first violin. Particularly noteworthy is Vladimir Sorokin, who played the deliberately striking clarinet part (Schubert's client, Ferdinand Graf Troyer, was an amateur clarinetist himself and also played the part in the premiere) with a warm sound and dancing elegance

Aufnahmejahr: 1958.
Als Wunderkind performte er bereits mit 10 Jahren das hochvirtuose 1. Violinkonzert von Henryk Wieniawski, debütierte mit 13 an der Carnegie Hall und machte mit 14 seine ersten Aufnahmen für Columbia. Michael Rabin galt als eines der größten Talente der Klassikszene bis er 1972 im Alter von nur 35 Jahren verstarb. Bis dahin hatte er in der Zeit zwischen 1950 und 1959 zahlreiche virtuose Meisterwerke aufgenommen.
Max Bruchs "Schottische Fantasie" Op. 46 basiert auf schottischen Volksliedern und zählt neben seinem ersten Violinkonzert zu den regelmäßig aufgeführten Werken des Komponisten. Zwar hatte Bruch Schottland nie besucht, doch unter Verwendung der Volksmusik der Schotten fängt das Werk die ländliche Atmosphäre und das lebensfrohe keltische Lebensgefühl hervorragend ein.
Der Virtuose und Komponist Henryk Wieniawski widmete sein erstes Violinkonzert dem Preussischen König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Das Konzert verlangt vom Solisten einen hohen spielerischen Level, welchen Wunderkind Rabin bereits in jungen Jahren erreicht hatte.

Hat man die strahlende Eleganz der Heifetz-Aufnahme im Ohr, hält man kaum für möglich, was man hier hört: Überwältigende Emotionen, Intensität jenseits jeder Beschreibbarkeit. Der 20jährige Michael Rabin versinkt förmlich in Bruchs Partitur, und man versteht, warum diese Karriere nicht lange gut gehen konnte: Wer Musik so sehr lebt, den muß sie auszehren. Eine romantische Erklärung für die schweren psychischen Probleme dieses sagenhaften Violinisten, gewiß, aber hören Sie selbst… Rabins stupende Virtuosität kommt in der ersten Schallplattenaufnahme des Fis-Moll-Konzertes von Henryk Wieniawski zum Tragen. Michael Rabin managed to be one of the most talented and tragic violin virtuosi of his generation. Hailed as a child prodigy, his talent matured gracefully into an adult level, but he failed to follow in his emotional growth, resulting in a cutting short of his career. He never reached the age of 36, yet remains one of the most fondly remembered of virtuoso violinists for listeners and fellow musicians.
Sir Adrian Boult founded the BBC Symphony Orchestra which set standards of excellence in the orchestra world. In 1950, he took over the leadership of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and revived its reputation, which had been on the decline after its peak in the 1930s. From the mid-1960s until his retirement after his last sessions in 1978 he recorded extensively for EMI. Boult's legacy includes his influence on prominent conductors to follow including Colin Davis and Vernon Handley.

Als Wunderkind performte er bereits mit 10 Jahren das hochvirtuose 1. Violinkonzert von Henryk Wieniawski, debütierte mit 13 an der Carnegie Hall und machte mit 14 seine ersten Aufnahmen für Columbia. Michael Rabin galt als eines der größten Talente der Klassikszene bis er 1972 im Alter von nur 35 Jahren verstarb. Bis dahin hatte er in der Zeit zwischen 1950 und 1959 zahlreiche virtuose Meisterwerke aufgenommen.
Das Violinkonzert e-Moll von Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy beschäftigte den Komponisten lange Jahre. Geschrieben für den Violinisten Ferdinand David, wurde es mit dem Gewandhausorchester Leipzig 1845 uraufgeführt. Es ist das letzte große Orchesterwerk des Komponisten und zählt zu den populärsten Vertretern seiner Gattung.
Maurice Ravel komponierte Tzigane als Rhapsodie für die ungarische Violinistin Jelly d'Aranyi (Großnichte des Virtuosen Joseph Joachim). Er verarbeitet darin keine authentischen Gypsy Melodien, gibt seiner Komposition jedoch einen exotischen, zigeunerartigen Klang.
Zum klassischen Repertoire zählt Camille Saint-Saens Havanaise. Das Stück für Violine und Orchester basiert auf dem Rhythmus der Habanera und ist geprägt von hispanischem Charakter.

Man kann dieses Konzert strahlen lassen wie Heifetz, man kann kaum vermutete Schattenseiten aufzeigen wie Kogan – bei Michael Rabin, zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme 22 Jahre alt, ist es reine Klangschönheit. Rabins ungeheuer intensiver Ton scheint Stahl schmelzen lassen zu können, wie Butter in der Sonne; Adrian Boults gemäßigte Tempi lassen ihm Zeit für seine Gesangslinien, bei denen man immer wieder an Belcanto-Arien aus der Glanzzeit der italienischen Oper denken muß. Seine legendäre Technik kann Rabin dann in den beiden umseitigen, hochvirtuosen Konzertstücken ausleben – und tut es mit hörbarem Genuß, wie schon das die „Tzigane“ eröffnende Solo offenbart: Die Spielfreude liegt in jedem Ton und wirkt geradezu ansteckend! – Schon die Originalpressung wurde vom Gramophone-Magazin in der Rezension vom November 1958 für den ebenso warmen wie präzisen Klang gelobt: Das kann man für diese Testament-Reissue nur unterstreichen! "Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto justly reckons among the prized possessions of every violinist's repertoire. Together with the violin concertos of Beethoven and Brahms, it forms the great triad among nineteenth century works for solo violin and orchestra. True, it does not aspire to the classical grandeur of the Beethoven concerto nor does it show the symphonic elaboration of Brahms' but it possesses a most alluring charm and lyrical grace of its own. Through its first two movements there runs a vein of gentle melancholy as characteristic of Mendelssohn's genius - Wagner read into this an expression of his Jewishness - as is the elfin lightness and glitter of the Finale. Mozart wrote 27 piano concertos but only six for the violin. This discrepancy in numbers is to be explained by the fact that his favorite instrument was the piano on which he was indeed one of the great virtuosos of his time while the solo violin held only a limited and temporary attraction for him. The first five violin concertos were composed in Salzburg in 1775 when Mozart was a boy of 19, and the sixth followed two years later after which his interest in the genre ceased. The precise occasions for which he wrote them is unknown - possibly for his own use, but, more probably, for Gaetano Brunetti who was the leader of the Salzburg court orchestra.

Harry Blech dirigiert das Philharmonia Orchestra
Carl Goldmark (1830 - 1915) war gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts einer der populärsten österreichischen Komponisten überhaupt. Doch der aufkeimende Nationalsozialismus machte der Aufführungspraxis der Werke des ungarischen Juden ein Ende, und nach 1945 war auch die Zeit für diesen letzten Vertreter der Spätromantik vorbei. Einspielungen seiner Werke, wie die hier vorliegende von 1958, haben heute große Seltenheit. Umso schöner, sie wie hier von einem echten Meister wie Nathan Milstein an der Violine zu hören. Gemeinsam mit dem Philharmonia Orchestra unter Harry Blech bringt er Goldmarks Violin-Konzert in a-moll zu Gehör. Das Werk begeistert mit Melodienreichtum, einer beinah quirligen Virtuosität und einer rhythmischen Energie, in der ganz klar Goldmarks ungarische Wurzeln zum Tragen kommen. Wer seine Klassik-Sammlung mit einer seltenen Perle bereichern möchte, der ist hiermit bestens beraten.

Rezension:
Wiewohl Karl Goldmarks (1830-1915) Violinkonzert bei Erscheinen 1877 begeistert aufgenommen wurde und mehrere Jahrzehnte durchaus populär war, fand es seinen Platz unter den großen Konzerten von Beethoven bis Tschaikowsky dann doch nicht. Im Nazi-Einflußbereich wurde es ab 1933 natürlich sowieso nicht mehr gespielt (der Komponist war schließlich Jude), aber das Mendelssohn-Konzert hat sich von dieser Zwangspause ja auch schnell erholt. Woran es lag, daß dieses so melodienstarke und wirklich violinistische Werk zum Nischendasein verurteilt wurde, bleibt schleierhaft. Eingespielt wurde es nur selten, allein in Nathan Milstein hatte es einen glühenden Fürsprecher. Seine 1957er Aufnahme ist bis heute Referenz – man hört in jedem Ton, wie sehr dieser Mann das Konzert geliebt haben muß. Hugh Bean, damals Konzertmeister des Philharmonia Orchestra, sieht Milstein als Verkörperung des Goldmark-Konzertes – und geht sogar noch weiter: Wenn jemand noch nie eine Violine gehört habe, würde er ihm das zweite Thema des ersten Satzes aus genau dieser Aufnahme vorspielen, als Definition des Violinspiels schlechthin! Bean steht mit seiner Einschätzung nicht alleine, auch das "Gramophone"-Magazin nennt diese Einspielung "surely Nathan Milstein's finest hour in the recording studio". Bemerkenswert ist diese Jahrhundertaufnahme aber nicht nur für den Solisten, sondern auch aufgrund der Orchesterbegleitung: Der gerne unterschätzte Harry Blech war selbst ein Geiger von einigem Rang und passionierter Kammermusiker und findet für Goldmarks Partitur stets den richtigen Ton. Insbesondere der langsame Mittelsatz verzaubert durch seinen intimen Charme! (1959/2019)

Carl Goldmark (1830 - 1915) was one of the most popular Austrian composers at the end of the 19th century. But the burgeoning National Socialism put an end to the performance practice of the works of the Hungarian Jew, and after 1945 the time for this last representative of late romanticism was over. Recordings of his works, such as the one here from 1958, are very rare today. So it's even nicer to hear her playing the violin from a real master like Nathan Milstein like this. Together with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Harry Blech, he performs Goldmark's Violin Concerto in A minor. The work inspires with a wealth of melodies, an almost lively virtuosity and a rhythmic energy, in which Goldmarks Hungarian roots are clearly evident. If you want to enrich your classic collection with a rare pearl, this is the best advice
