Der steinige Weg zur künstlerischen Freiheit durch das Dickicht des sowjetischen Diktats schien sich für Schostakowitsch mit dieser Aufnahme ein wenig geebnet zu haben. Es kam einer kleiner Sensation gleich, dass man einem westlichen Aufnahme-Team erlaubte nach Moskau zu reisen, um dort Musik eines zeitgenössischen Komponisten für den westlichen Markt zur verewigen. Und dass die Mercury-Leute neben weiteren Tondokumenten eine Aufnahme mitbrachten, die auch in Zeiten politischen Tauwetters ihren hohen Rang verteidigt, ist ein Glücksfall.
Planvoll und ausdrucksstark inszeniert das Borodin-Quartett den modern geprägten Personalstil von Schostakowitsch, der in romantischer Klangtradition wurzelt. Auch wenn es sich im Quartettspiel nicht schickt, die Leistung eines Einzelnen hervorzuheben, sei hier Cellist Berlinski genannt, der sich seinem Part im 4. Quartett mit atemberaubender Sanglichkeit und spielerischer Sicherheit hingibt. Auf ganz besondere Weise steht das 8. Quartett im Zeichen der eigenen Sache: Schostakowitsch widmete es sich selbst als eigenes Requiem und arbeitete sein Tonmonogramm DESCH sowie zahlreiche Zitate aus früheren Werken wie der 1. Sinfonie und dem Klarinetten-Trio op.67 in die Partitur ein. Insofern garantieren Musik und Einspielung eine höchst persönliche Bekanntschaft mit dem Komponisten. .........................

Der erste große Streichereinsatz in der “Rhapsodie” genügt: Das ist überwältigend. Und wenn dann der Percussions-Apparat seinen Auftritt hat, kann das selbst bei abgebrühten Audiophilen noch ein Gefühl der Einschüchterung hervorrufen. Ja doch, Orchesterpauken sind so tief. An klanglichen Highlights wäre noch vieles aufzuzählen, doch ist’s hier auch die Interpretation des Franzosen Paray, die immer wieder Anlaß zu spontanen Begeisterungsausbrüchen gibt. Ohne Frage zählen die auf dieser LP versammelten Werke zu seinen besten Einspielungen überhaupt. Darunter eine unglaubliche Aufnahme von Ravels bitterböser Walzer-Parodie, in der sowohl der Geist des Wiener Originals wie seine völlige Verzerrung zur Fratze in sagenhafter Deutlichkeit zum Ausdruck kommen. Wobei, von solch glanzvoller Leistung mal ganz abgesehen, schon die “Escales” des Spätimpressionisten Jacques Ibert das Album zum Repertoirestück mit Pflicht-Charakter macht. Lebendiger ist das wohl kaum je gespielt worden (besser aufgenommen ohnedies nicht). Kein Wunder, Paul Paray kannte das dreisätzige Werk auch länger als jeder andere Dirigent – hatte er es doch anno 1924 uraufgeführt…! (ORIGINALAUFNAHMEN 1963/REISSUE 2004)..........................

Es gibt in der Klassik Standardwerke, die in allen Plattensammlungen zu finden sind, "Romeo und Julia" ist eines davon. Es stellt sich dann oft die Frage, ob eine andere Interpretation oder eine bessere Pressung die Neuanschaffung wert ist. Im Falle dieser neuen Mercury-Wiederauflage wird jeder, der sie hört, schnell überzeugt sein, dass auch sie in das eigene Regal muss. Alleine schon die klangliche Seite ist hier überragend, besonders die lyrischen Passagen haben einen wunderbaren Schmelz und Ausdruck, hier kommt der Faktor einer exzellenten Mercury-LP deutlich zum Vorschein. Musikalisch weiß diese Interpretation von Skrowacziewski und seinem Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra zu begeistern, die Balance zwischen feinsinnigen, farbenprächtigen wie auch typisch russisch dramatischen und wuchtigen Klängen ist überaus beeindruckend. Ein herrliches Reissue! .......

Ballettsuiten sind bekanntlich die kleinen Schwestern der großen Bühnenmusiken und werden von den Komponisten meist im Nachhinein für den Konzertgebrauch umgearbeitet. Bei Prokofiews "Romeo und Julia" verhält es sich anders. Denn kurioserweise gelangten seine beiden Suiten noch vor der Premiere der kompletten Ballettmusik zu Erstaufführung. Der Nachhall des Erfolgs schwingt noch immer durch die Musiklandschaft. Denn dass diese Musik auch heute noch zur Startformation einer anspruchsvollen Schallplattensammlung gehört, hat gute Gründe: Beide Suiten vereinigen eine Vielfalt prägnanter Melodien, umhüllt und getragen von farbenprächtigen Klangstrukturen.
Wie Prokofiew im Idealfall klingen kann, stellt Skrowacziewski mit dem Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra überzeugend unter Beweis. Elanvoll lässt er seine Musiker durch die Burleske rauschen, lyrisch und intensiv verströmt das Liebesthema seinen Glanz, bis das Geschehen wuchtig und von grellen Dissonanzen gezeichnet in "Tybalds Tod" seinen Gipfel erreicht.
Auch die zweite Suite zeigt sich künstlerisch und aufnahmetechnisch auf höchstem Niveau. Plastisch treten die charakteristischen Themen und Motive hervor, eingebettet in einem frisch-natürlichen, zuweilen ungemein warmen Klangbild.
Spürbar haben sich alle Mitwirkenden für diese hochwertige Produktion viel Zeit genommen. Den Hörer wird es freuen, wenn er sich die Zeit nimmt, diese Aufnahme zu entdecken. .....

Liszts Klavierkonzerte ragen in mehrfacher Hinsicht aus dem Gattungskanon heraus. Zum einen spiegelt sich in ihnen die stupende Virtuosität des Komponisten wider, zum anderen weisen die kühne Harmonik und der freie Umgang mit tradierten Formgerüsten den Weg zur Moderne. Wer sich an das gewaltige Es-Dur-Konzert wagt, das 1855 mit Liszt am Flügel und Berlioz am Pult uraufgeführt wurde, weiß um sein gewichtiges Erbe.
Byron Janis und die Moskauer Philharmoniker bieten anstatt einer überdimensionierten Großleinwand-Inszenierung eine kompakte Lesart des dicht geflochtenen Gedankenwerks. Indem der Horowitz-Schüler an den gebotenen Stellen Pranke zeigt, aber auch seine schon in frühen Jahren perfektionierte Technik in feingliedrige Poesie umsetzt, befreit er das Werk von seiner viel zitierten Sperrigkeit. Dies kommt besonders im rauschhaften Finale zur Geltung, das die Interpreten mit pianistischer Brillanz und triumphaler Orchestergebärde zusammen wachsen lassen.
Auch im Schwesterwerk spürt man den sorgsamen Umgang mit dem Notentext. Vom elegischen Einstieg über das pulsierende Agitato bis zum expressiven Melodienspiel füllen Byron Janis und Rozhdestvensky die Vision der sinfonischen Dichtung mit klingendem Inhalt, der im sprühenden Finale seinen Höhepunkt findet. Wenn Musik der Neudeutschen Schule aus russischen Händen so klingt wie hier, verdient sie es, ins Russland-Set aufgenommen zu werden.

Rezension:
Über Jahrhunderte wurden Bachs Cellosuiten als reine Übungswerke mißverstanden, durch die man sich als Cellist durchzuquälen hatte. Pablo Casals war bekanntlich derjenige, der das Mammutwerk durch seine legendäre Gesamteinspielung in den 30er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts rehabilitierte und seinen ungeheuren musikalischen Reichtum freilegte. Seither sind ihm etliche der größten Cellisten gefolgt. Unter diesen genießt die Einspielung des Ungarn Janos Starker einen besonderen Ruf: Von den Einspielungen der Analog-Ära ist sie diejenige, an der sich alle anderen messen lassen müssen – abgesehen natürlich von Casals’ besagter Pioniertat, die unerreicht bleibt, aber aufgrund ihrer Entstehungszeit nun einmal klanglich gewisse Einschränkungen mit sich bringt. Es ist fraglos die Sternstunde dieses Interpreten, der hier buchstäblich und hörbar in die Musik des Thomaskantors eintauchte. Das springt umgehend und mit jeder Note auf den Hörer über: Wie diese Werke über so lange Zeit in solchem Maße fehlinterpretiert werden konnten, wird vollkommen unverständlich – gehören sie doch so offensichtlich zum Ergreifendsten, was jener Vollender des barocken Stils hinterlassen hat. Wenn man nach einem im Wortsinne ergreifendem Hörerlebnis wieder in der Lage ist, rationale Gedanken zu fassen, darf man darüber sinnieren, wie es Bach möglich war, für ein einzelnes Melodieinstrument derart polyphone Musik zu schaffen… Selbstverständlich hat der nach circa vier Jahrzehnten unverminderte Referenzstatus dieser Einspielung auch etwas mit der technischen Seite der Aufnahme zu tun: Viel besser ist ein Solo-Cello seither nicht auf einem Tonträger festgehalten worden. Der voluminöse, dynamisch nicht unproblematische Klang des Instruments ist hier durchaus berauschend. Darüberhinaus ist es nicht nur Starkers Cello, das hier in überragender Detailtreue abgebildet wird, sondern auch der Musiker selbst. Man hört, wenn man das will, die Finger- und Bogentechnik – vor allem aber hört man ihn atmen, im Einklang mit Bachs Phrasierung. Das trägt in nicht geringem Maße bei zu dem Sog, dem man hier – der Begriff sei erlaubt – förmlich ausgeliefert ist. Abschließend sei noch vermerkt (wiewohl es in einem solchen Falle keine Rolle spielen sollte), daß diese Speakers Corner-Wiederauflage natürlich auch unter dem Aspekt des Schallplattensammlers höchstes Lob verdient. Wiederauflagen hat es nämlich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten kaum gegeben, weswegen die Originalausgabe – trotz ihres für dieses Label recht späten Geburtsjahres 1966 – zu den ganz ausgesprochen teuren Mercury-Alben gehört… (1966/2004)

Es ist heute kaum nachvollziehbar, dass man trotz der epochalen Bach-Renaissance im 19. Jahrhundert Werke des Thomaskantors unterschätzen konnte, galten die Cello-Suiten doch fast 300 Jahre lang nur als reines Etüden-Dickicht, das jeder angehende Virtuose zu durchforsten hatte. Wahre Wunder in der Rezeption bewirkten erst Aufnahmegerät und Wiedergabetechnik. So förderte die legendäre Aufnahme von Pablo Casals in den 30er Jahren Unerhörtes zu Tage, an dem sich alle nachfolgenden Solisten messen lassen müssen, aber auch reiben können.
Janos Starkers Einspielung von 1965, die sich trotz überzeugender Vergleichsinterpretationen der Digital-Zeit noch immer beim Hörer durchsetzt, hinterließ selbst bei den qualitätsverwöhnten Producern nachhaltigen Eindruck. Charlotte Gilbert vom Mercury-Label blieben die Sitzungen als eines der fünf großen Ereignisse in 20 Jahren Aufnahmepraxis haften.
Keine Frage, Starker lässt den großen Tönen seines Instruments freien Lauf, ohne sie zu forcieren. Zum klanglich abgerundeten Leib und spieltechnischer Erhabenheit gesellt sich die fein verästelte Seele der Interpretation, die der spannungsvollen Bachschen Harmonik höchste Expressivität einhaucht und dem strengen rhythmischen Gerüst der Sätze Schwung verleiht. Wer hört, wie Starker aus orgelnden Doppelgriffpassagen, kombiniert mit fein differenzierter Tempogebung ein angeregtes Frage-Antwort-Spiel entfesselt, wird das viel zitierte Paradoxon verstehen - Bachs Cellosuiten sind Mehrstimmigkeit auf einem Instrument.

The sound quality and performance are absolutely to-die-for.
Today, it is difficult to understand that despite the tremendous Bach renaissance that took place in the 19th century, many compositions by the Cantor of St. Thomas’ Church in Leipzig had been underrated. The Cello Suites, for example, have been regarded for almost 300 years as purely a set of tricky etudes that every virtuoso in the making simply must tackle.
Janos Starker’s recording of the Suites from 1965 makes a lasting impression on the listener, and even record producers who are well used to recorded excellence have been highly impressed. Starker’s full-bodied sound and technical brilliance are complemented by his finely chiseled interpretation that lends immense expression to Bach’s thrilling harmony and verve to the strict rhythmic construction of the movements.
In terms of price and collectability the Starker discs are in a different league. The originals were made iby the celebrated Mercury Living Presence label, which some rank alongside Decca for quality of sound. Collectors usually go for the 3-LP boxed set (SR3-9016), a choice of the standard maroon or gold promotional labels (which fetch between £500 and £2,000 at auction) and are – needless to say – rare. The set was re-issued on the Mercury Golden Imports label and then remastered by Philips (who owned Mercury) and compressed onto two discs. These, and especially the latter, are – according to received opinion – of inferior sound quality, so enter Speakers Corner, re-pressing its 2004 transfer.
The First Suite’s 'Praeludium' emerges from the loudspeakers with startling presence and realism, and there is a sense of reverberant acoustic and space around the sound, which makes any SACD crude by comparison. Each register is controlled, with no spurious bass echo and an exceptionally full treble, which allows one to appreciate Starker’s masterly control of variable vibrato and almost complete absence of finger noise. The Second and Fifth Suites were recorded earlier, and the cello sound is far larger and very different – most of this is down to Starker having changed cellos in 1965, from the huge 'Lord Aylesford' Stradivarius to a more conventionally sized Goffriller instrument – and there is less reverberation. By any standards this is marvellous sound.
In the superb eight-page booklet (LP size!) Starker writes about Bach and the difference between performing in the concert hall and recording studio. He says that “on stage minor technical mishaps are of little significance. Personality, communicative power and convincing artistry take precedence. On a record repeated hearing magnifies shortcomings, technical and musical.”
After listening to the Suites in one sitting, I can only say that by the cellist’s own standards these sound like live performances, without any shortcomings. The technical mastery is absolute (the Fourth Suite was recorded in one take), there is sweep, power and a frightening intensity of expression that is exhilarating and ultimately profoundly moving.
Like all great Bach-players Starker effortlessly conveys an underlying sense of timeless logic and, to use a word that seems to have gone out of fashion: spirituality. As you would expect and hope for, each of Starker’s complete recordings of the Suites has differing points of emphasis,
but this Speakers Corner/Mercury set is one of the few that deserves, and stands, comparison with Pablo Casals. Yes you can buy them on CD for considerably less, but the sound on these LPs is immeasurably superior.

Are your records completely analogue?
Yes! This we guarantee!
As a matter of principle, only analogue masters are used, and the necessary cutting delay is also analogue. All our cutting engineers use only Neumann cutting consoles, and these too are analogue. The only exception is where a recording has been made – either partly or entirely – using digital technology, but we do not have such items in our catalogue at the present time
Are your records cut from the original masters?
In our re-releases it is our aim to faithfully reproduce the original intentions of the musicians and recording engineers which, however, could not be realised at the time due to technical limitations. Faithfulness to the original is our top priority, not the interpretation of the original: there is no such thing as a “Speakers Corner Sound”. Naturally, the best results are obtained when the original master is used. Therefore we always try to locate these and use them for cutting. Should this not be possible, – because the original tape is defective or has disappeared, for example – we do accept a first-generation copy. But this remains an absolute exception for us.
Who cuts the records?
In order to obtain the most faithful reproduction of the original, we have the lacquers cut on the spot, by engineers who, on the whole, have been dealing with such tapes for many years. Some are even cut by the very same engineer who cut the original lacquers of the first release. Over the years the following engineers have been and still are working for us: Tony Hawkins, Willem Makkee, Kevin Gray, Maarten de Boer, Scott Hull, and Ray Staff, to name but a few.
At the beginning of the ‘90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the reissue policy was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC Compact Classics, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and others, including of course Speakers Corner, all maintained a mutual, unwritten code of ethics: we would manufacture records sourced only from analogue tapes.
Vinyl’s newfound popularity has led many other companies to jump on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source from which to master: CDs, LPs, digital files and even MP3s.
Even some who do use an analogue tape source employ a digital delay line, a misguided ’80s and ‘90s digital technology that replaces the analogue preview head originally used to “tell” the cutter head in advance what was about to happen musically, so it could adjust the groove “pitch” (the distance between the grooves) to make room for wide dynamic swings and large low frequency excursions. Over time analogue preview heads became more rare and thus expensive.
So while the low bit rate (less resolution than a 16 bit CD) digital delay line is less expensive and easier to use than an analogue “preview head”, its use, ironically, results in lacquers cut from the low bit rate digital signal instead of from the analogue source!
Speakers Corner wishes to make clear that it produces lacquers using only original master tapes and an entirely analogue cutting system. New metal stampers used to press records are produced from that lacquer. The only exceptions are when existing metal parts are superior to new ones that might be cut, which includes our release of “Elvis is Back”, which was cut by Stan Ricker or several titles from our Philips Classics series, where were cut in the 1990s using original master tapes by Willem Makkee at the Emil Berliner Studios. In those cases we used only the original “mother” to produce new stampers.
In addition, we admit to having one digital recording in our catalogue: Alan Parsons’ “Eye in the Sky”, which was recorded digitally but mixed to analogue tape that we used to cut lacquers.
In closing, we want to insure our loyal customers that, with but a few exceptions as noted, our releases are “AAA”— analogue tape, an all analogue cutting system, and newly cut lacquers.
