Nicht einmal auf die in solchen Fällen übliche Floskel der “Geschmacksfrage” läßt sich hier zurückgreifen; die Interpretationen sind einfach zu unterschiedlich. Wo bei Paray ein überwältigendes Farbenspiel fasziniert, nimmt bei Reiner eine hintergründige Spannung gefangen. Und wie üblich bei dem legendären Ungarn ist die Exaktheit des Orchesters schon beinahe unheimlich; in den leisen Passagen fast noch mehr als in den lauten. Das betrifft natürlich in gleichem Maße Rachmaninoffs ohnedies düstere “Toteninsel” – Arnold Böcklins bedrohliches Bild scheint hier wirklich Klang geworden zu sein… – Die Aufnahme klingt noch detaillierter.Hervorragende Wiedergabequalität !!................. ********************************************************************************************* Maurice Ravel - Rapsodie espagnole Sergei Rachmaninov - "Isle Of The Dead", Op. 29 Das Chicago Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung von Fritz Reiner Noch ein Gigant aus der Reihe von RCA Living Stereo. Um den “Reiner Sound" hörbar und plastisch zu machen, spielte das Chicago Symphony Orchestra drei lyrische Werke von Ravel und Rachmaninoff ein. Die „Rapsodie Espagnole“ ist durchzogen von musikalischen Anspielungen auf typisch spanische Motive und Rhythmen und zeichnet sich durch eine schillernde atmosphärische Dichte aus. Im Gegensatz dazu ist die „Pavan for a dead princess“ ein eher getragenes Werk, das von rhythmischen Überraschungen und melancholischer Stimmung lebt. Glitzernd-schimmernd interpretierte Streicherpassagen im Flirt mit zartem Harfenspiel vermitteln das Bild einer Wasseroberfläche, in der sich Libellen spiegeln. Die „Toteninsel“, eine musikalische Interpretation des berühmten Gemäldes von Arnold Böcklin, besticht durch langsamen Spannungsaufbau, der immer noch Raum lässt für verspielte Zwischentöne. Absolut bewundernswert, wie die Musiker unter der genialen Leitung von Fritz Reiner den roten Faden durch das ganze Stück hindurch hör- und spürbar machen. Die Fassung, die hier aufgenommen wurde, ist die von Maurice Ravel orchestrierte - und bei diesem legendären Arrangement lohnt sich jeder noch so große Aufwand bei der Aufnahme, um beste Klangqualität zu erreichen, denn Ravels besonderes Ohr für facettenreiche und volle Orchesterklänge ist bis heute unerreicht. Dass die Grundlage dieser unglaublich abwechslungsreichen Orchestrierung tatsächlich nur ein simpler Klavier-Auszug war, mag man kaum glauben. In der Aufnahme von Fritz Reiner lebt Ravels vielfarbig gemaltes Klangbild bis in jedes kleinste Detail - selten ist diese zu Recht weltberühmte Kooperation zweier der größten Komponisten ihrer Zeit so gut eingespielt worden. ........................ *********************************************************************************************** Rezension: Nicht nur mit Recht eine der ganz großen RCAs, sondern vor allem bis heute und trotz einer kaum überschaubaren Zahl von Mitbewerberinnen eine echte Referenzeinspielung. Natürlich ist da auch noch die legendäre Leibowitz-Einspielung im Rennen, gibt es Szell, Muti, Toscanini, Markevitch, Dutoit und viele andere – aber dennoch: Was Fritz Reiner hier seinem Chicagoer Orchester abverlangt hat, grenzt ans Übermenschliche und zählt ebenso wie seine "Scheherazade" oder der 1954er "Zarathustra" zu den Sternstunden nicht nur dieser Interpreten-Kombination, sondern der Schallplattengeschichte schlechthin. – Schon die Classic Records-Ausgabe war klanglich absolut überragend; von einer unglaublich präzisen Dynamik vor allem in den tieferen Lagen, die man so auf einer (ohnehin unbezahlbaren) Originalpressung nicht fand. A powerful feeling of ineptness can greet musicians when performing Dmitri Shostakovich's First Symphony. Technically, it is extremely difficult, and contains a musical sophistication that is quite staggering. The symphony was offered to the jury of the Leningrad Conservatory as his graduation exercise! Even today, the wealth of invention continues to amaze, more so when one recognizes that young Shostakovich's unique musical voice was already formed - a voice that continued to speak and develop in all his work, one representative of the essence of the gigantic struggles of the Soviet people. ................. This particular recording of the work is splendid. In fact, Jean Martinon and the London Symphony Orchestra present one of the finest renditions. Their personification of style, interpretation and ensemble are a trinity of near perfection. From the opening clarinet solo (Gervase de Peyer, perhaps?) to the closing orchestral fortissimos, the late fifties LSO shines gloriously. Strings have a beautiful golden sheen, woodwinds glow and brass resonate thrillingly. And the recording - simply spectacular! The Decca-sourced RCA displays Kingsway Hall to perfection, with its requisite Holborn/Aldwych "tube" rumble. By this account, London Transport were on time, the regular deep growling adding visceral pleasure to the audiophile need quotient. ................. As a filler, the Ballet Suite from The Age of Gold is representative of Shostakovich at his sarcastic best. The piquant orchestration is, again, performed with reckless abandon by the virtuosos of the London Symphony, with the famous oblique-styled Polka played especially well. ................. James Walker and Alan Reeve get the somewhat tricky acoustics of Kingsway just right. Imaging and the soundstage are exemplary, both adding to the splendor of the presentation. This is an example of what art as recorded sound should strive to be. A triumph for all participants. ........... *********************************************************************************************** ................. BACKROUND ................. As some audiophiles are keenly aware, Classic Record LP titles that were issued on 180 gram vinyl (or of less weight), sounded much better than the later 200 gram versions of the same title. Apparently this has to do with the vinyl presses that were used to make the LPs when they switched over to 200 gram vinyl. These machines were never set up to handle the extra thick, 200 gram slabs of vinyl. And to simply flip from 180 to 200 proved very problematic. The vinyl was noisy. There were pressing flaws. All in all, an inferior product when compared to the slightly less heavy, but much better sounding 180 gram vinyl. Classic Records came out with all kinds of variants for their 200 gram pressings - remember all that? If you lived through that period, you likely were wondering why there were so many versions of the same music being made by the same company in slightly different vinyl concoctions! It was simply that the 200 gram versions were inferior to the earlier pressings made on 180 gram vinyl. This is the reason why the 180 gram versions not only cost much more to acquire now, but they did, in fact, sound much better. As a collector, you will probably want to try a few versions yourself to see if audiophiles were simply imagining what they were hearing - this is your chance to acquire one such title. This LP is on 180 gram vinyl. It is one of the first pressings made of this title and best of all, it's factory sealed! Don't wait too long to get these LPs as supplies are disappearing. Zunächst natärlich erstmal akustisch, denn hier fasziniert die Aufnahme vom ersten Takt an! Es dauert aber auch nicht lange, bis auch der Experte unter den Klassikfreunden die feine Darbietung des Orchesters unter der Leitung von Kiril Kondrashin anerkennt. Zugegeben fällt es eigentlich jedem guten Orchester leicht, so beliebte Werke wie "Capriccio Italien" mit seiner berühmten Melodie und das nicht minder bekannte "Capriccio Espagnol", bei dem uns das Orchester nur so um die Ohren zu fliegen scheint, erfolgreich zu spielen. Auf dieser höchst unterhaltsamen Platte aus dem Jahre 1958 zeigt sich die klassische Musik Russlands von einer Seite, die man viel zu selten hört. Schwermut, Melancholie und düster Atmosphärisches sucht man hier vergebens, denn die beiden Orchestersuiten „Masquerade“ von Aram Khachaturian und „Die Komödianten“ von Dimitri Kabalesvky aus den Jahren 1939 bzw. 1938 halten, was ihre Titel versprechen: Fröhlich ungebremst dahinrauschende, beinah überdrehte Musik, zwar mit dem einen oder anderen nachdenklich zurückgenommenen Moment, aber stets mit der burlesken Note der beiden gleichnamigen Theaterstücke, für welche die Suiten ursprünglich entstanden. Das RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra unter dem russischen Dirigenten Kirill Kondrashin wirft sich mit Elan in diesen Parforce-Ritt, und das Ergebnis kann sich hören lassen. Leider kennt man hierzulande diese beiden in Russland höchst populären Werke kaum - ein Grund mehr sich diese klanglich überragende Aufnahme zu besorgen. UNITED in this lively and attractive recording are three big K's of Soviet music—Kabalevsky, Khachaturian, and Kondrashin. The first two are masters of colorful symphonic writing, the third a master of symphonic interpretation. All three are known to the American public—Kabalevsky and Khachaturian through their brash and energetic music, Kondrashin through his conducting, both on and off the record. Few will forget Kondrashin's vitality on the podium on the occasion of the triumphal series of homecoming concerts given by the prize-winning young Texan pianist Van Cliburn in New York City, Philadelphia and Washington in May of 1958. .............................................................................. If vitality is the keynote of Kondrashin, it is most conspicuously the keynote of the music of his two compatriots. Indeed, whole sections of these Suites possess a parallel spirit of almost rowdy festivity. They bear, too, the frank stamp of theater. Both Suites, in fact, were by-products of plays, and both plays concerned people acting out roles—in Masquerade, the puppet-like flunkeys of a sham aristocracy; in The Comedians, a jolly troupe of strolling players. .............................................................................. In Masquerade, Aram Khachaturian abandons the lure of his native Armenia to succumb to the broader Western tradition of Glinka, Borodin, and Tchaikovsky. The reason isn't far to seek. The setting is no longer the exotic terrain of south Russia, but the Russia of the tragic romantic poet Lermontov, an early nineteenth-century Russia of titled gamblers and sumptuous masquerades—of sophisticated passion and intrigue. In his play Lermontov indicts the festive glitter and masked pretense beneath which lurk coarseness and hypocrisy. Amid costly elegance and elaborate ceremony, insensate jealousy and rivalry are rife. Through it all run the twin themes of romantic brooding and brilliant frivolity. ............................................................................... Such, too, are the main themes of Khachaturian's music, written as a set of entr'actes and interludes for a Moscow production of Lermontov's tragedy in 1939. Of these, five were assembled for the concert suite that became an immediate favorite of the public. While each section boasts an appeal of its own, together they evoke an atmosphere of impassioned reverie and ballroom festivity. There is the "Waltz," for instance, with its chief motive coiling and swirling like dancing couples in a setting of dazzling finery and furnishings . . . and undefined sadness. A violin chants dreamily over velvety harmonies in the "Nocturne," as if it were Lermontov himself discoursing poetry to the night. The "Mazurka" brings a brief interlude of courtly cheer, heightened by vivid effects of color. Yet here too, amid the bustle and sparkle, a note of melancholy quietly intrudes. The wistful note is still stronger in the "Romance"—a suave meditation of distinct Russian mood tinged with Armenian color and a melodic turn of phrase. ............................................................................ In the final "Galop," Khachaturian seems to have the last laugh on the empty pageantry surveyed. This is a racing tour de force, crisscrossed with slashing rhythms and snarling colors. At times the orchestra fairly sizzles à la Offenbach. A riotous carnival commotion spreads over the music. Suddenly a brass band guffaws mockingly. Rasping and impudent, the music whirls ahead at a breakneck clip, pauses in brief pastoral calm as if to catch its breath, and makes a last plunge in a wild carrousel of rhythm. .............................................................................. Written for a play staged by the Central Children's Theater of Moscow in 1938, Kabalevsky's music is a series of episodes depicting the gay, carefree life of an itinerant company of buffoons. The Suite of ten numbers begins with a "Prologue" that sets the brisk pace and cheery mood and ends with an "Epilogue" of clownish merriment. There is a "Galop" of breezy circus impudence, and a catchy "Waltz," mildly streaked with nostalgia. A grotesquely angular "March" suggests Prokofieff. Two or three numbers offer gently lyrical divertissements, but largely the music is a spirited romp. It is a child's world of endless bustle and bright holiday gimmicks. Instruments frolic through the fabric like acrobats, and rhythms tumble over one another like clowns. One thinks again of the impertinent mirth of Offenbach, but only at times. For this is a child's carnival—good fast fun free of implications beyond its bright revelry.
