Der Name des Label Everest und des Dirigenten Leopold Stokowski genügen dem Klassikfreund bereits, um diese Wiederauflage haben zu müssen. Denn wer sich bereits eine Platte dieser legendären 35mm Magnetfilm-Aufnahmen auf den Teller seines Laufwerkes gelegt hat, der weiß, wie brillant, extrem dynamisch und detailreich diese LPs klingen. Auf dem Programm steht eines der letzten und zugleich berühmtesten Werke von Bela Bartok, sein "Konzert für Orchester". Dieses reich instrumentierte Werk zählt zu den zugänglichsten Kompositionen des Ungarn. Die Betonung einzelner Instrumentengruppen oder Soloinstrumenten ist eine der besonderen Reize dieses Konzertes, lyrische und getragene Passagen kennzeichnen diese Musik. Furios wird es erst im fünften Satz, wobei auch hier die folkloristischen Elemente wie bereits in den vorangegangenen Sätzen immer wieder die Dramatik auflockern. Direkt vom 35mm Filmband gemastert von Bernie Grundman über seine röhrenbetriebene Schneidemaschine. ************************************************************************************************** Zu den besonderen Errungenschaften des inzwischen nicht mehr existenten Labels Classic Records zählt die Wiederentdeckung des majestätischen Klangerlebnisses der Everest 35mm Magnetfilm-Aufnahmen mittels einer bahnbrechenden Reihe von Wiederveröffentlichungen. Während der frühen 1960er Jahre wurden die Everest-LPs dreikanalig auf 35mm Magnetfilm aufgenommen. Die Verwendung von Magnetfilm ermöglichte eine größere Klangtreue und weniger Nebengeräusche als das Standard 1 / 4» Magnetband. Die Firma Westrex konstruierte eine Spezialausrüstung entsprechend den Wünschen von Everest, um die Möglichkeiten auch voll zu nutzen. Schneller Vorlauf in die heutige Zeit: Analogue Productions lässt diese Kollektion wieder auferstehen durch eine Serie von Neuveröffentlichungen mit vorerst 10 Titeln. Bernie Grundman hatte seinerzeit für die Neuauflagen Lackfolien sowohl mit 33 als auch 45rpm geschnitten – die 45rpm-Versionen wurden jedoch niemals veröffentlicht! Jedes Set von zwei LPs steckt in einem Stoughton Printing Klappcover mit von Hand aufgebrachtem Deckblatt, an der typischen Falzung erkennbar, und zeigt die originale Artwork incl. des Everest Records Markenzeichens. Beide LPs stecken zudem zu ihrem Schutz in einer Klarsichthülle. Bartoks Konzert für Orchester verdankt seinen Namen dem Ansatz, Instrumentengruppen innerhalb des Orchesters im gesamten Stück konzertant oder solistisch zu behandeln. Diese virtuose Handhabung ist bemerkenswert, beispielsweise im Fugato-Abschnitt des ersten Satzes, in dem die Bläser hervorgehoben werden, sowie im zweiten Satz, in dem Instrumentenpaare nacheinander erscheinen und eine brillante Passage bilden. Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra derives its name from the approach taken in treating instrument groups within the orchestra in a ‘concertante' or soloist manner throughout the piece. This virtuoso treatment, for example, is notable in the fugato section of the first movement where the brass are highlighted as well as in the second movement where pairs of instruments appear consecutively creating a brilliant passage. Fine und Robert Eberenz Produktion: Wilma Cozart Wer glaubt, dass ein mehrteiliges LP-Set zu einem immerhin stolzen Preis von über 70 Euro nur zögerlich gekauft wird, zumal "nur" Cello-Solis mit Bachschen Werken geboten wurden, der soll sich mal die Erfolgsstory der zweimal ausverkauften Bach/Starker-Box von Speakers Corner anschauen! Die extrem hohe Nachfrage hat aber auch einen personellen Grund und der heißt Janos Starker! Nun folgt diese LP mit dem Cellokonzert von Antonin Dvorak sowie Kol Nidrei von Max Bruch. Hier zeigt uns der ungarische Star-Virtuose Starker, dass ihm keine musikalische Hürde zu hoch ist, allesamt meistert er sie spielend. In glänzender Harmonie mit Antal Dorati und dem LSO vertieft er sich in das musikalische Programm und lässt uns teilhaben an schwelgerischen Klangfarben und zugleich meditativer Hingabe der oft kammermusikalischen Interpretationen. Es ist wohl unnötig zu erwähnen, dass diese Mercury-Aufnahme ein klangliches Juwel darstellt, kurzum, ein Traum von Schallplatte! ************************************************************************************************ Nicht nur aus klanglichen Gründen ist dies einer der begehrtesten Titel aus dem Labelkatalog: Das Dvorak-Konzert nämlich hat in dieser Künstlerbiographie schon deswegen eine besondere Bedeutung, weil es das Werk war, mit dem der damals 14jährige Starker im Jahre 1938 sein professionelles Konzertdebüt gegeben hatte. Seine Aufnahme des Konzertes, 24 Jahre später und als gereifter Musiker, zeugt denn auch von einer großen Vertrautheit mit dem Werk. Ebenfalls positiv wirkt sich sicherlich auch die Tatsache aus, daß Starker mit dem Dirigenten Antal Dorati eine langjährige Freundschaft verband (Dorati hatte dem frisch Emigrierten 1952 die Stelle des ersten Cellisten des Dallas Symphony Orchestra verschafft!). Die Einspielung, die bis heute zu den besten des Werkes zählt, zeichnet sich aber nicht nur durch ihre selbstverständliche Sicherheit aus, sondern auch durch eine Eleganz und fast schon Zurückhaltung, die sie von anderen, 'romantischeren' Interpretationen unterscheidet – hier kann man sehr schön hören, warum Starkers Cellospiel oft mit dem Violinton des großen Jascha Heifetz verglichen wurde (daß beide Musiker bei ihren Konzerten durch ihre unbewegliche Mimik auffielen, kommt natürlich hinzu…). Der 45 UPM-Umschnitt hängt die klangliche Latte noch ein Stückchen höher! Tom Fine, Sohn der High-Fidelity-Aufnahme-Pioniere C. Robert Fine und Wilma Cozart Fine von Fine Recording Inc. in New York City, überwachte das Mastering dieser Neuauflagen, die mit 45rpm direkt von den 3-Spur-Masterbändern der ersten Generation geschnitten wurden. Der 3->2 Kanal-Mix wurde direkt an der Schneidemaschine durchgeführt, es wurde kein 'cutting-master' Zwischenschritt, digitale Quelle oder digitales Delay verwendet. Thomas Fine nahm die 3->2 Abmischungen zusammen mit dem Mastering Engineer Ryan K. Smith im neuen Studio von Sterling Sound in Nashville, Tennesee, vor. Smith steuerte manuell den Rillenabstand und die -tiefe auf seiner Neumann VMS-80 Schneidemaschine, arbeitete ohne pre view Signal und umgeht so den Vortriebrechner der Maschine. Dabei schnitt er diese Lackfolien genauso, wie George Piros, Vizepräsidenten der Fine Recording Inc. und Leiter des Masterings, damals die Original-LPs. Der ungarisch-amerikanische Cellist János Starker verkörpert raffinierte Eleganz und subtile Bogenarbeit. Starker, der im April 2013 starb, war einer der renommiertesten Cellisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Dvorak Cellokonzert und Bruchs Kol Nidrei wurden am 6., 7. und 10. Juli 1962 im Townhouse von Watford bei London aufgenommen. Drei Schoeps M210-Mikrofone, die in Kugelcharakteristik angeordnet waren, wurden an der Vorderseite des Orchesters aufgehängt, während die Musiker in der Halle und nicht auf der Bühne platziert wurden, um die Akustik optimal zu nutzen. Die Mikrofone werden direkt mit 3-Spur-Recordern verbunden: einer 1 / 2"-Bandmaschine und ein 35mm-Magnetfilmschreiber, alle Aufnahmen wurden zu Produktionsmastern geschnitten. Die Original-LP wurde von dem 35mm-Film gemastert, und der Mercury Living Presence-Schriftzug auf der Vorderseite enthielt das 35mm-Logo. Im Laufe der Zeit verschlechterte sich das 35mm-Magnetfilmmaterial und des Master ist nun nicht mehr in einem abspielbaren Zustand. Das 1 / 2" Magnetband ist aber gut erhalten und klingt immer noch so gut wie am Tag der Aufnahme. Dieses 2LP-Set, das mit 45rpm geschnitten wurde, präsentiert meisterhaft die volle Dynamik, die auf den Masterbändern vorhanden ist, da der größere Rillenabstand Ihrem Stereoabtaster seine Aufgabe erleichtert. Tonal purity, even in the dreaded upper register and the cadenzas, remains unscathed, so that one can concentrate wholly on the meditative magic of the music. Starker certainly found worthy fellow musicians in Dorati and the LSO. The conductor and soloist set a benchmark in how to work together as a team in concert in that it is less the often-lamented emulation than the interpretation, which stands in the foreground in this performance. Rather, the two protagonists commit themselves to a chamber-music-like reading, which is distinguished by the dynamically moderate intonation of the orchestra and the slender tone of the soloist throughout. Der Duke nahm die neue Freiheit, die ihm die Langspielplatte bot, gekonnt auf, um erstmalig ungekürzte Konzertarrangements seiner Stücke zu präsentieren (statt das Album nur mit mehr Liedern zu füllen). So finden sich hier zwar nur vier Ellington-Klassiker, dafür dauert das kürzeste unter ihnen, "Solitude", bereits über acht Minuten. Eine Revolution des Hörens, die dieses Album zu einem Stück Zeitgeschichte werden ließ. Aber auch in der Geschichte des Ellington-Orchesters ist es ein Markstein, sind hier doch Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown und Sonny Greer noch einmal vor ihrem Weggang zu hören, während Paul Gonsalves - der für den Rest seines Lebens dem Orchester treu bleiben sollte - erst wenige Tage vor den Aufnahmen hinzustieß. Es dürfte klar sein, "Masterpieces" ist etwas ganz Besonderes und dass es nun in feinster audiophiler Qualität, dazu im Cover der Erstauflage erneut aufgelegt wurde, darf als großes Glück empfunden werden, sollte es doch in keiner Jazz-Sammlung fehlen. Das gilt natürlich besonders für die nun erschienene 45-rpm-Version - klanglich einfach unschlagbar! Das Album kommt auf 200g-schwerem Vinyl im festen Klappcover. Neu gemastert durch Ryan Smith bei Sterling Sound von den Original-Analogbändern. ************************************************************************************************* Rezension: Die ersten beiden Jahrzehnte seiner Schallplattenkarriere mußte sich Ellington (wie alle anderen) auf das beschränken, was die Technik hergab – und das waren ca. drei Minuten Laufzeit pro Seite. Ein Ärgernis, wenn man, wie der visionäre Big Band-Leiter, in weit größeren Maßstäben dachte. Im Dezember 1950 (immerhin dennoch drei Jahre nach Einführung der Langspielplatte!) nahm er dann endlich drei seiner Klassiker sowie ein vergleichsweise neues Stück erstmals so auf, wie sie gemeint waren – und in den Konzerten der Band auch gespielt wurden. "Mood Indigo", "Sophisticated Lady", "Solitude" und "The Tattoed Bride", in Versionen zwischen achteinhalb und über 15 Minuten Spielzeit. Nicht nur konnten sich die anspruchsvollen Kompositionen dadurch endlich entfalten, es blieb auch Zeit, die fabelhaften Solisten des Orchesters (Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonzalves, Jimmy Hamilton, William "Cat" Anderson – um einige der wichtigsten zu nennen) ins ihnen gebührende Licht zu rücken. Die resultierende Columbia-LP ML4418 ist damit ein echtes Stück Jazz- und Schallplatten-Geschichte. But really one should be thinking of Antonio Carlos Jobim, who, with his composition from 1958 "Chega de saudade," first created the type of Brazilian samba that is known today as bossa nova. It was with one of Jobim’s songs, "Desafinado," that bossa nova began its triumphant conquest of the USA. In 1962, Stan Getz made the work widely known when he recorded the number, together with Charlie Byrd, on his album Jazz Samba. It was this recording, along with Focus (1961), which was responsible for Getz’s definitive comeback in the USA at that same time. Jazz Samba opened the floodgates to a new musical vogue, and although cool jazz had been swept aside by hard bop, the reserved and melancholy touch of Getz’s style once again became all the rage. The Three Sounds waren Ende der 1950iger/ Anfang '60iger Jahre eine überragende Gruppe - aus gutem Grund. Der Pianist Gene Harris, der Bassist Andy Simpkins und der Trompeter Bill Dowdy verstanden es stets, einen unwiderstehlichen Groove anzustimmen. Sie erfüllten jeden ihrer Songs mit vollem Blues, mit Swing, der jede Combo hinter sich lässt und das, ohne dabei auf eine gehörige Portion Soul zu verzichten. Das gleiche kann man vom Altsaxophonisten Lou Donaldson behaupten. Er war von Charlie Parker beeinflusst, hatte aber mehr Blues in seinem Spiel. In den 1950igern veranstaltete er eigene Sessions mit Clifford Brown, Thelonious Monk und Jimmy Smith und hatte eine große Anhängerschaft durch seine Blue Note Aufnahmen. "LD + 3“ ist eine ganz besondere Aufnahme von 1959, mit Donaldson und The Three Sounds, die sich gegenseitig inspirieren. Das Album startet mit einer hingebungsvollen Version von "Three Little Words“ und bietet Bebop-Klassiker wie "Just Friends“ und "Confirmation“, das durchaus mit Feuer gespielt wird. Wie einige Audiophile sich bewusst sind, klang Classic Record LP Titel, die auf 180 Gramm Vinyl (oder weniger Gewicht) ausgegeben wurden, viel besser als die späteren 200 Gramm Versionen des gleichen Titels. Anscheinend hat dies mit den Vinylpressen zu tun, die verwendet wurden, um die LPs zu machen, wenn sie auf 200 Gramm Vinyl umgestellt wurden. Diese Maschinen wurden nie eingerichtet, um die extra dicken, 200 Gramm Platten von Vinyl zu behandeln. Und um einfach von 180 auf 200 zu schlagen, war es sehr problematisch. Das Vinyl war laut. Es gab dringende Mängel. Alles in allem ein minderwertiges Produkt im Vergleich zu dem etwas weniger schweren, aber viel besser klingenden 180 Gramm Vinyl. Classic Records kam mit allen Arten von Varianten für ihre 200 Gramm Pressungen - erinnern Sie sich das alles? Wenn du diese Periode gelebt hast, fragst du dich wahrscheinlich, warum es so viele Versionen derselben Musik gab, die von der gleichen Firma in etwas anderen Vinyl-Gebräu gemacht wurde! Es war einfach, dass die 200 Gramm-Versionen den früheren Pressungen auf 180 Gramm Vinyl unterlegen waren. Dies ist der Grund, warum die 180 Gramm-Versionen nicht nur viel mehr kosten, um jetzt zu erwerben, aber sie taten in der Tat viel besser. Als Sammler werden Sie wahrscheinlich versuchen, ein paar Versionen selbst zu sehen, ob Audiophile sich einfach vorstellen würden, was sie hörten - das ist Ihre Chance, einen solchen Titel zu erwerben. Diese LP ist auf 180 Gramm Vinyl. Es ist einer der ersten Pressungen aus diesem Titel und am besten von allen, es ist werkseitig versiegelt!
