Das Album Talking Book aus dem Jahr 1972 war sein neunzehntes Album und er hatte mittlerweile alle Rechte an seinen eigenen Veröffentlichungen und sein eigenes Tonstudio. Er begann sich musikalisch von den Scherenschnittartigen Motiven seiner vorherigen Alben abzusetzen und die verwendeten Texte sind stärker autobiographisch und sogar erstmals mit politischem Unterton. Musikkritiker sehen dieses Album in einer Linie mit Marvin Gayes Album „What's Going On" als Aufruf an die Bevölkerung ihr Schicksal selbst in die Hand zu nehmen und nicht auf die Almosen anderer zu warten. Mit You are the Sunshine of my Life und Superstition enthält das Album zwei der bekanntesten Stevie Wonder Hits, doch sollte dies nicht über die absolute hohe Qualität jedes einzelnen Songs hinweg täuschen. Es ist unzweifelhaft eines seiner schönsten Alben und zugleich Glanzlicht des Motown-Labels. Die klangliche Ausgangssituation der Aufnahmen für dieses Album war gut und Ton-Ingenieur Kevin Gray von AcousTech hat die vielschichtigen Tonkollagen wunderbar erhalten und die 24-Karat-Gold-CD mit HDCD Codierung bietet Dynamik und Wärme im Überfluss. Building on its predecessor, TALKING BOOK combined all aspects of Stevie's musical personality--superb compositions, innovative keyboard sounds, exuberant singing, and lush, complex sonic landscapes--into a perfectly focused, polished package. "Steam Locomotive No. 4449, became America's most famous steam locomotive, as she paraded coast to coast during our Bicentennial celebration, pulling the American Freedom Train (1975-76). But before that, she was one of the famous Daylight streamliner passenger locomotives built for Southern Pacific during the late 1930's and early 1940's. After sitting idle, rusting away in a Portland Oregon, park for nearly sixteen years, No. 4449 was fully restored to mint operating condition, and proceeded to thrill the nation as the symbol and motive power of the American Freedom Train. While I did not travel the full 28,000 miles during No. 4449's national tour, I did record numerous scenes taht were reminiscent of my boyhood days, on Southern Pacific's Coast Daylight route. Let's turn back the clock, at least twenty-five years, between Los Angeles and San Francisco, but with today's state of the art recording techniques. But then, every song on BLIND FAITH has become an FM radio staple. "Presence of the Lord" with Winwood's fervent vocals, "Had to Cry Today" (featuring Clapton's dense, multi-tracked blues leads), and the jacked-up rockabilly of Buddy Holly's "Well Alright," are all good examples. But the band never had much of a life outside the studio, and after Blind Faith folded, Winwood and Grech joined Baker's Air Force before reforming Traffic.
