This 40th anniversary edition of Garland's seminal Judy at Carnegie Hall recording is a completely fresh experience even for those intimately familiar with previous versions. By accessing tapes which have not been used on any other release -- including the pricey DCC gold disc -- many sonic foibles which plagued the original have now been repaired. The overwhelming success of this album, which initially spent 95 weeks on the charts and garnered five Grammy Awards, makes it a prime candidate for a sonic overhaul. By reclaiming tapes that were once considered MIA, the sound is now notably more balanced. In addition, much of the fake applause has been thoughtfully removed, unveiling previously masked dramatic pacing and audience interplay between songs. But the highlight of the entire package is the return of "Alone Together" from the actual Carnegie Hall performance. The song had been replaced by a studio version on the 1989 CD reissue due to missing master tapes. Since then, those tapes have been put back into commission and provide the jaw-dropping sound on this delightful set. .............. There is a good reason that Garland historian Scott Schechter titled his specially-penned liner notes essay "Two Hours of POW!" With relentless verve, Garland takes on her entire musical catalogue with astonishing aplomb. There is little sign of the decades of self-abuse which had left her frail by the early '60s. But what we are fortunate enough to have is the magic and youth of her voice. Especially poignant are "You Go to My Head," "Just You, Just Me," and her quintessential reading of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Judy at Carnegie Hall is far and away the finest live performance to be issued during her lifetime. The riffs and arrangements are more intricate, the lyrics are more intelligent and biting and James Hetfield's growl is meaner. The set starts out with two tunes that would have been right at home on KILL 'EM ALL, but the next two are slower and more involved. "Ride The Lightning" is a slow (by Metallica's standards) dirge about the futility of war. "Fade To Black" is a ballad (!) that builds to an instrumental coda featuring the guitar melodies that the band would later base their sound around. It's also Hetfield's first attempt at singing in tune. Zum einen ist der Titel ein Hinweis auf die Ambitionen der Band im Bereich der Oper; am besten erkennbar am Beispiel des Klassikers "Bohemian Rhapsody", der bereits eine Generation vor seiner Wiederentdeckung in Wayne's World ein Lieblingsstück der Headbanger war. A Night at the Opera ist aber auch der Titel eines Films der Marx Brothers, und natürlich passt auch dieser Verweis zu Queen, die die Höhen des Pomprock nur selten ohne ein wissendes Augenzwinkern erklommen. Das Album ist für seinen aufs Genaueste durchdachten Bombasteffekt bekannt. Tatsächlich liegt hier jedoch eine Vielfalt an Material vor, die von dem großartigen Pianostück "You're My Best Friend" und dem McCartney-haften "39" über den Music-Hall-Stil von "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" zum beinharten Metal-Rock von "Death on Two Legs" und "I'm in Love with My Car" reicht. "Rhapsody" is just the tip of the iceberg here. "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" is a music hall ditty that owes a debt to the Kinks. "'39" is a surprisingly poignant folk-rocker written and sung by Brian May. "You're My Best Friend" is pure '70s AM melodic pop. Queen even ventures into vaudeville territory (given Mercury's show biz leanings, not as much of a stretch as one might think) on the fatalistic, old-timey "Good Company."
