He lived fast, died young, and left a small body of music that laid the groundwork for electric blues as well as rock & roll. Johnson had a unique voice, capable of deep growlings and grumblings and eerie, almost ghostly wails and moans. His guitar illustrated his stories, making any other instruments irrelevant. His songs conveyed a sense of a man trying to outrun a pack of demons ("Hell Hound on My Trail," "Cross Road Blues"), were autobiographical ("I'm a Steady Rollin' Man") and, of course, dealt with love troubles ("From Four Until Late," "Love in Vain"). Johnson's songs have become blues standards--"Sweet Home Chicago," "Dust My Broom," and many others have been adapted by many rock bands, from the Rolling Stones' version of "Love in Vain" to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "They're Red Hot." With this album, Waters touches heavily on the dangers of capitalism, the insensitivity of the human race, the ridiculousness of war, and the onslaught of mindless entertainment that encroaches on mankind on a day-to-day basis. Fitting all these aspects into 14 songs is a task in itself, but accomplishing this task alongside music that is forceful and appealing is extremely difficult, and still Waters succeeds in doing this throughout the duration of the album. "The Ballad of Bill Hubbard" is a moving spoken intro from Alf Razzell, a former member of Britain's Royal Fusiliers. A stab at the false sense of security that lies within religion is dealt with on the powerful "What God Wants, Pt. 1," and the cowardice of the world's leaders is addressed in "The Bravery of Being Out of Range," one of the albums most blatant tracks. Guest guitarist Jeff Beck rises to the occasion on a number of songs here, and both Rita Coolidge and Don Henley fill in behind and beside Waters on a couple of the longer tunes. Ending with the title track, a song that sums up the whole of the album with it's subtle yet hard-hitting demeanor, Waters proves that he can still reveal his conceptual ideas with pristine clarity, only on Amused to Death, the music is as equally entertaining and effective. ~ Mike DeGagne .................. *************************************************************************************************** .................. Weil ihm aber das Auflegen von Ton- konserven schnell langweilig wurde, gründete Sylvester Stewart eine eigene Band und spielte sich in den Clubs hemmungslos nach vorn. Mit seinem grandiosen Auftritt in Woodstock wurde er 1969 zur neuen Galionsfigur der schwarzen Musik. Selbst der kleine Prince zählt Stewart alias Sly Stone heute zu seinen Vorbildern. Nur wenn man von Jeff Becks Weiterbildungsmaßnahme in den frühen 70ern weiß, kann man sich erklären, wie dieser Typ, der als Teenie seinen flinken Blues bei den Yardbirds spielte, mit seiner Jeff Beck Group experimenteller wurde und seiner Gibson bereits unerhörte Läufe entlockte, dann 1975 dies machte: Beck zaubert nie dagewesene Kaskaden verspielter Licks und Tricks, reißt und zerrt mit bloßen Fingern witzelnde, schwitzende Töne aus den Saiten, interpretiert zwei Stevie-Wonder-Songs, einen Beatles-Song, schreibt sonst fast alle weiteren Tracks, die auf komplexem Funk basieren, selbst. Und klar, Beck spricht die Sprache des Jazz, aber fabriziert mit seinen einzigartigen Mitmusikern Max Middleton an den Keyboards, Phil Chenn am Bass und dem grandiosen Richard Bailey am Schlagzeug eine völlig eigene Fusion-Sprache, die noch heute, nach 25 Jahren Popgeschichte, unwiderstehlich hip ist. Review by Mark Kirschenmann............... Blow by Blow typifies Jeff Beck's wonderfully unpredictable career. Released in 1975, Beck's fifth effort as a leader and first instrumental album was a marked departure from its more rock-based predecessors. Only composer/keyboardist Max Middleton returned from Beck's previous lineups. To Beck's credit, Blow by Blow features a tremendous supporting cast. Middleton's tasteful use of the Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and analog synthesizers leaves a soulful imprint. Drummer Richard Bailey is in equal measure supportive and propulsive as he deftly combines elements of jazz and funk with contemporary mixed meters. Much of the album's success is also attributable to the excellent material, which includes Middleton's two originals and two collaborations with Beck, a clever arrangement of Lennon and McCartney's "She's a Woman," and two originals by Stevie Wonder. George Martin's ingenious production and string arrangements rival his greatest work. Beck's versatile soloing and diverse tones are clearly the album's focus, and he proves to be an adept rhythm player. Blow by Blow is balanced by open-ended jamming and crisp ensemble interaction as it sidesteps the bombast that sank much of the jazz-rock fusion of the period. One of the album's unique qualities is the sense of fun that permeates the performances. On the opening "You Know What I Mean," Beck's stinging, blues-based soloing is full of imaginative shapes and daring leaps. On "Air Blower," elaborate layers of rhythm, duel lead, and solo guitars find their place in the mix. Propelled by the galvanic rhythm section, Beck slashes his way into "Scatterbrain," where a dizzying keyboard and guitar line leads to more energetic soloing from Beck and Middleton. In Stevie Wonder's ballad "Cause We've Ended as Lovers," Beck variously coaxes and unleashes sighs and screams from his guitar in an aching dedication to Roy Buchanan. Middleton's aptly titled "Freeway Jam" best exemplifies the album's loose and fun-loving qualities, with Beck again riding high atop the rhythm section's wave. As with "Scatterbrain," Martin's impeccable string arrangements enhance the subtle harmonic shades of the closing "Diamond Dust." The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it's arguably even more impressive, showcasing the group's interplay and David Gilmour's solos in particular. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system. The breakthrough success of DARK SIDE OF THE MOON made WISH YOU WERE HERE a crucial follow-up in strictly commercial terms. Further pressure came from it being Pink Floyd's first recording for a new label, Columbia. Yet the demands on the band only provided Roger Waters with more fodder for his lyrics, which glanced at the band's roots as well as their new responsibilities. The mechanized throb of a VCS3 synthesizer, fed through a repeat-echo unit, signals the opening bars of "Welcome to the Machine," a diatribe against an industry more concerned with money than creative music-making. "Have a Cigar" further establishes Waters' contempt by bringing in singer Roy Harper to play the role of a "faceless suit," who none-too-innocently asks, "Which one's Pink?" The remaining songs indirectly look back to the first casualty of Pink Floyd's growing fame, the group's founder, Syd Barrett. ................... The 20-minute-plus "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" has its roots in earlier pieces like "Atom Heart Mother Suite" and "Echoes." But rather than just another Floydian soundscape, its lyrics make it a paean to Barrett's genius and a requiem for his subsequent breakdown. The first five of the song's nine movements open the album with sax player Dick Parry wailing as effectively as he did on DARK SIDE. The final four sections, which close the album, form a reprise that starts with the sound of wind and David Gilmour's guitar screaming and crying. The band then settles into a laid-back jam that ends with Richard Wright's billowing synth delicately fading out. The title track deals also with Barrett, as well as the tension the idealist Waters was feeling in battling the greed that surrounded the band's success. JT finds a young James Taylor using a wide variety of molds into which he pours his folksy, easy-going style. His considerable songwriting skills are in full bloom, beginning with the jubilant "Your Smiling Face." Some very different ground is explored, however, with the funky "Honey, Don't Leave L.A." and the authentic country of "Bartender's Blues," on which Taylor gets a little help from Linda Ronstadt. It's his relationship with Carly Simon, though, that provides the fuel for Taylor's trademark lighter-than-air styling on "There We Are," "Another Grey Morning" and "Terra Nova," where Simon herself contributes a fine vocal performance. Taylor's lovely "Secret O' Life" is worth the price of admission for any singer-songwriter enthusiast. Other points of interest include Taylor's cover of the Jimmy Jones hit "Handyman" and the jazzy "Traffic Jam." On his last couple of Warner Brothers albums, Gorilla and In the Pocket, James Taylor seemed to be converting himself from the shrinking violet, too-sensitive-to-live "rainy day man" of his early records into a mainstream, easy-listening crooner with a sunny outlook. JT, his debut album for Columbia Records, was something of a defense of this conversion. Returning to the autobiographical, Taylor declared his love for Carly Simon ("There We Are"), but expressed some surprise at his domestic bliss. "Isn't it amazing a man like me can feel this way?" he sang in the opening song, "Your Smiling Face" (a Top 40 hit). At the same time, domesticity could have its temporary depressions ("Another Grey Morning"). The key track was "Secret O' Life," which Taylor revealed as "enjoying the passage of time." Working with his long-time backup band of Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, and Russell Kunkel, and with Peter Asher back in the producer's chair, Taylor also enjoyed the playing of music, mixing his patented acoustic guitar-based folk sound with elements of rock, blues, and country. He even made the Country charts briefly with "Bartender's Blues," a genre exercise complete with steel guitar and references to "honky tonk angels" that he would later re-record with George Jones. The album's Top Ten hit was Taylor's winning remake of Jimmy Jones' "Handy Man," which replaced the grit of the original with his characteristic warmth. JT was James Taylor's best album since Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon because it acknowledged the darkness of his earlier work while explaining the deliberate lightness of his current viewpoint, and because it was his most consistent collection in years. While Marsalis had been paying dues for some time in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and the Brooklyn Philharmonia, this was the release that put him on the map. It serves as the starting point from which he began his trek to jazz stardom and renown outside the world of jazz (Marsalis has also recorded several albums of classical music). Marsalis' virtuoso technical ability, and unwavering, passionate devotion to undiluted, non-commercialized jazz seemed to take its inspiration from every trumpet great from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis to Don Cherry. Marsalis synthesized these influences and still managed to forge a sound of his own. For his debut, Marsalis proceeded from a hard-bop base (a la the classic early '60s sessions on the Blue Note and Prestige labels) for a hard-swinging, inspired and volatile (especially brother Branford on "RJ") session. He alternated between his own quartet/quintet and a band of impressive guests: Hancock, Carter and the late Tony Williams (all of whom, coincidentally, were in the Miles Davis Quintet of the 1964-67 period). Review by Scott Yanow ............... Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis's debut on Columbia, recorded when he was only 19, made it clear from the start that he was going to be a major force in jazz. At the time Marsalis (who was originally a bit influenced by Freddie Hubbard) was starting to closely emulate Miles Davis of the mid-'60s and his slightly older brother Branford took Wayne Shorter as his role model. The inclusion of Davis's rhythm section from that era (pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams) on four of the seven selections reinforced the image. The three other numbers feature such up-and-coming talents as pianist Kenny Kirkland, Charles Fambrough or Clarence Seay on bass and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, helping to launch the rise of the Young Lions. But although not overly original, there is a great deal of outstanding playing on this set, including a definitive version of Tony Williams's "Sister Cheryl" and the long tradeoff between Wynton and Branford on "Hesitation." .................... *************************************************************************************************** **************************************************************************************************
