The performance on this Collector's Edition disc consists of two major parts of the complete piece, "Work Song" and "Come Sunday." Each of these is further divided into six parts, through which the themes are stated, developed, restated, and set in dialogue with other voices. Shifting tempos, swelling orchestrations, and standout playing by Harry Carney, Quentin Jackson, Cat Anderson, and Ray Nance further heighten the impact of this Ellington masterwork. The distinguishing mark, however, is the presence of Mahalia Jackson. Review by Bruce Eder............... In Person!, part of a series of 1958 collaborations between Tony Bennett and Count Basie, has an unusually convoluted history. Bennett and Basie appeared together at the Latin Casino in Philadelphia in late November of 1958 in a performance that was recorded for commercial release — but when that tape proved unusable for technical reasons, producer Mitch Miller decided to bring the singer and the band back together in the studio in a pair of sessions a month later to re-create the concert program. For the original LP release, the producers also dubbed on applause, seeking to fake the ambience of an actual live performance, hence the title of the album. But the fake was obvious to all concerned, and when the album was re-released in 1994 as part of Sony Music's Mastersound series of audiophile CDs, the makers went back to the original session tapes and left off the applause. The result is a state-of-the-art reissue of what was also, as near as one can tell, the first of Bennett's albums to get a stereo release. As this was also the first reissue the album had apparently ever received, the tapes were in impeccable condition — the result is an extraordinary listening experience, even 40-plus years later. The original album, even with the tampering at the time, had a healthy swing to it, courtesy of the Basie band, and with the richness of tone and the close sound available to the makers of the CD, the album works even better. Bennett's sensitively nuanced intonation in the opening of "Pennies from Heaven" is now up close and personal, while the band's beat in the second half of the song is now crisper and more solid than ever. Ralph Sharon, Bennett's usual accompanist, is handling the piano chores (while Basie himself is credited as leader), and his finely articulated playing is also brought out crisply on "Lost in the Stars" and other tracks. It's all worth hearing, and more often than just once — it was records like this, as reconstituted properly for CD, that constituted the absolute golden end of the pop legacy of the late '50s. .................... ***************************************************************************************************

Except that none of the others came up with such a dazzling tour de force as I LOVE PARIS, recorded in 1954 and only available now in this Gold Disc version from Columbia. I LOVE PARIS is no corny accordion-led tourist travelogue, even though some fine accordion work does figure on a song like "Under the Bridges of Paris." Yes, the album gathers just about every song with Paris in its title in time-honored '50s fashion. But Legrand is such an imaginative and lucid orchestrator of both strings and band that one immediately forgives him the gimmick. But every so often his former label, Columbia Records, would get something together on LP from among his '40s and early-'50s sides. The Voice was one of a handful of '50s long-players showcasing the first phase of Sinatra's solo career, and at the time it wowed listeners -- the focus is on the ballads, and the dozen represented here constitute a bumper crop of classics, all resplendent in the singer's richest, most overpowering intonation and most delicately nuanced work. The sensibilities, from the lushly seductive "Laura" to the gently self-satisfied "(I Got a Woman Crazy for Me) She's Funny That Way," show off a huge emotional range, and the latter song may be the highlight of the album, displaying a soft yet smugly confident brand of machismo, all of it drenched in Axel Stordahl's overflowing string arrangements, yet quietly bold in its emotional content. Man muß wohl über diesen Klassiker kaum noch Worte verlieren, dieses Meisterwerk von Miles Davis gehört zu den beliebtesten Alben des modernen Jazz. Klanglich weiß diese Aufnahme ohnehin bereits seit fast 40 Jahren (!) zu begeistern. ........................... Fragt man Jazzfans nach einem Meilenstein der Jazzgeschichte, so dürfte nicht selten der Titel „Kind Of Blue“ von Miles Davis fallen. Zweifellos, diese Platte ist ein echtes Meisterwerk, die Zusammenarbeit von Davis mit Stars wie John Coltrane, Bill Evans oder Wynton Kelly ist schlicht genial gewesen. Miles Davis sorgte damals mit dieser Musik auch für Innovation, besonders die ausgiebigen Soli in den eher langsameren Rhythmen waren ungewöhnlich. „Kind Of Blue“ ist ein Paradebeispiel für den modalen Jazz, Nummern wie „So What“ oder „Flamenco Sketches“ bis heue unvergleichliche Klassiker! ................Und es gilt als bislang meistverkauftes Jazzalbum überhaupt! ................. Das ist die einzige Jazzplatte, die auch Leute besitzen, die sonst keinen Jazz hören. Und mit gutem Grund. Die Band allein ist schon außergewöhnlich (und ein Beweis für Miles Davis' meisterhaftes Talent, Formationen zusammenzustellen, wenn nicht gar einer für die Existenz Gottes). Mit dabei sind John Coltrane und Julian "Cannonball" Adderley an den Saxofonen, Bill Evans am Klavier (mit Ausnahme von Wynton Kelly bei "Freddie Freeloader") und die fantastische Rhythmusgruppe aus Paul Chambers am Kontrabass und Jimmy Cobb am Schlagzeug...................... Coltranes Strenge am Tenor steht Adderleys funky Feeling am Alto gegenüber, mit Davis als Moderator zwischen den Temperamenten und Bill Evans als Magier einer ruhigen Klangfläche, auf der sich die anderen bewegen können. Zugleich sorgt die rhythmische Partnerschaft von Cobb und Chambers dafür, die Gesetze des Timings auszuhebeln. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it's arguably even more impressive, showcasing the group's interplay and David Gilmour's solos in particular. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system. The breakthrough success of DARK SIDE OF THE MOON made WISH YOU WERE HERE a crucial follow-up in strictly commercial terms. Further pressure came from it being Pink Floyd's first recording for a new label, Columbia. Yet the demands on the band only provided Roger Waters with more fodder for his lyrics, which glanced at the band's roots as well as their new responsibilities. The mechanized throb of a VCS3 synthesizer, fed through a repeat-echo unit, signals the opening bars of "Welcome to the Machine," a diatribe against an industry more concerned with money than creative music-making. "Have a Cigar" further establishes Waters' contempt by bringing in singer Roy Harper to play the role of a "faceless suit," who none-too-innocently asks, "Which one's Pink?" The remaining songs indirectly look back to the first casualty of Pink Floyd's growing fame, the group's founder, Syd Barrett. ................... The 20-minute-plus "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" has its roots in earlier pieces like "Atom Heart Mother Suite" and "Echoes." But rather than just another Floydian soundscape, its lyrics make it a paean to Barrett's genius and a requiem for his subsequent breakdown. The first five of the song's nine movements open the album with sax player Dick Parry wailing as effectively as he did on DARK SIDE. The final four sections, which close the album, form a reprise that starts with the sound of wind and David Gilmour's guitar screaming and crying. The band then settles into a laid-back jam that ends with Richard Wright's billowing synth delicately fading out. The title track deals also with Barrett, as well as the tension the idealist Waters was feeling in battling the greed that surrounded the band's success. Broken up into three duo and two trio performances, Friday Night in San Francisco catches all three players at the peaks of their quite formidable powers. The first track features Al di Meola and Paco de Luc¡a teaming up for a medley of di Meola's "Mediterranean Sundance" (first recorded by the duo on di Meola's classic 1976 album Elegant Gypsy) and de Luc¡a's own "Rio Ancho." It is a delightful performance, full of the fire and inhuman chops that one expects from two players of this caliber. However, the two guitarists obviously have big ears, and they complement each other's solos with percussive, driving rhythm parts. There is a laid-back, humorous element to Friday Night in San Francisco as well, best witnessed in di Meola and John McLaughlin's performance of Chick Corea's "Short Tales of the Black Forest." Rapid-fire licks from the pair soon give way to atonal striking of the body of the guitar, running picks along the strings, etc. Before the farce is completed, they have played a blues and quoted the Pink Panther theme. It is funny stuff, and it serves to dispel the image of the trio, especially di Meola, as super-serious clinicians more concerned with technique than music. The other great piece of evidence against such a narrow-minded claim can be found in both the quality of the compositions featured on Friday Night in San Francisco as well as the sensitivity and dynamic variation brought to the performances. A perfect example of this is the sole studio track, a McLaughlin composition entitled "Guardian Angel" (the opening theme of which is taken straight from "Guardian Angels," a song that appears on McLaughlin's 1978 Electric Dreams album). It is a fine piece, and one that features a haunting melody as well as some of the best solos on the record. All in all, Friday Night in San Francisco is a fantastic album and one of the best entries in all of these guitarists' fine discographies. ~ Daniel Gioffre ................ ************************************************************************************************* ................... Friday Night In San Francisco ..................... This live recording from 1980 matched fusion guitar heavyweights Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin with Spanish guitar whiz Paco DeLucia. The result, a dazzling technical display, also earned jeers as the international summit of world-class finger-wigglers by critics who felt it was long on chops and short on heart. John McLaughlin's importance to the development of the jazz fusion scene can't be overestimated: as the guitarist on Miles Davis's seminal Bitches Brew and A Tribute to Jack Johnson, he was the first significant guitarist of the electric jazz era; on his own, he brought power rock, spiritualism, and lush orchestration to the scene via his Mahavishnu Orchestra. DiMeola, the most commercially successful next-generation fusion guitarist, achieved stardom with Chick Corea's group Return to Forever and on his own records. DeLucia, virtually unknown in the U.S., is a fine flamenco guitarist, and it is that orientation more than anything that colors Friday Night: even when playing straightforward non-flamenco compositions, the phrasing and sensibility lurks behind every note.
