Eine LP mit „Supersession“ zu betiteln ist ein hoher Anspruch, den die Musiker (und der Produzent) an sich stellen. So etwas kann man nicht planen, nur wenn Ort und Zeit stimmen, wenn die Musiker einen super Tag erwischen, werden echte Sternstunden der Musik aufgenommen. Bei den meisten der neun Blues-Rock-Titel dieser CD traf das sicherlich zu: „Season Of The Witch“ (Donovan) in dieser Version ist so ein Song, auch „You Dont Love Me“ und der Dylan-Klassiker „It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry“ gehören dazu. Insgesamt darf man die Titel mit Steven Stills als extrem gelungen ansehen, weil hier das Zusammentreffen zu echter gegenseitiger Befruchtung führte, besonders „His Holy Modal Majesty“ ist ein geniales Stück mit tollen Improvisationen. Es gelang dabei den drei Solisten oft, die grandiosen Momente aus ihren eigenen Formationen (Al Koopers Blood, Sweat & Tears; Mike Bloomfields Electric Flag und Steven Stills Buffalo Springfield) zu toppen. A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune"). All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's revolutionary "Super Bit Mapping" system. The last of ELO's classic trio of late-'70s releases, after 1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD and 1977's OUT OF THE BLUE, 1979's DISCOVERY was also the group's last significant commercial success. A bit more self-consciously experimental than the previous pair of ELO albums--"The Diary of Horace Wimp" could have come from the pen of Jeff Lynne's more musically adventurous former musical partner Roy Wood--the album also finds Lynne finally taking notice of the musical trends of the day. The hyper-prominent snare pulse, keening violins, and scratchy guitar of the opening "Shine a Little Love" marks this as ELO's disco song, though the Beatlesque harmonies of the bridge are unmistakably Lynne's. (The cover relegated the band's name to tiny print under Estefan's name; after this album, their name was permanently retired.) Fully half of the album's 10 songs were Top 40 singles, with four hitting the Top 10, including Estefan's first Number One, the dramatic ballad "Anything For You." However, the dance songs "1-2-3" and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" were more typical of the album's Latin-pop vibe, a giddy mix of bubblegum hooks, slick radio-ready production, and songwriter/producer Emilio Estefan's knack for Latin beats that were exotic without being too forbidding for pop radio. Review by Richard S. Ginell............ With the Skylark "experiment" behind him, Paul Desmond reverted back to the relaxed quartet format that suited him well in the past. The reason? Through Jim Hall, he found a little-known, splendid guitarist in Toronto named Ed Bickert who became his new gigmate in 1974, and this album was meant to show his discovery off. In fact, it sparked a Desmond renaissance where he regained a good deal of the witty spark and erudite cool of his collaborations with Hall, no matter how unfashionable it was to play this way in 1974. Bickert is an even more reticent player than Hall, softer in touch and temperament, but eminently musical, enough to fire up Desmond's creativity. Old Desmond hand Connie Kay lends sympathy and comfort on drums, and Ron Carter is on bass. "Squeeze Me," "Everything I Love," and "Till the Clouds Roll By" are the best examples of the empathy at work here but any track will do, including the two outtakes on the first CD release, the "Song from M*A*S*H" (which, come to think of it, always had a Desmond-like wistfulness about it) and Jobim's "Wave," which develops a suavely songful quality midway through. ............ ************************************************************************************************

This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system. Time and familiarity -- through multiple reissues -- may have muted the seeming significance of some of what's here, but in 1960 Sings Lonely and Blue was not only a breakthrough for Roy Orbison as his debut LP, but also for rock & roll. Up to that point, apart from Elvis Presley -- who was in a class by himself -- few white rock & rollers had even tried to make as bold a use of the LP as what we hear on this record. Orbison, his collaborator Joe Melson, and producer Fred Foster turned the singer's debut long-player into a huge canvas for a sound that combined rock & roll's beat, Nashville's countrypolitan sound, and the singer's unique multi-octave range and operatic intensity into something unique in music. The single "Only the Lonely" may have been the most accessible and commercial side of this new sound, but the whole album was packed with great moments and different permutations of that sound: the powerful lead vocal and the Boots Randolph sax break on "I'll Say It's My Fault"; the haunting Orbison-Melson "Come Back to Me (My Love)," which was like a mini-movie script, a vest-pocket romantic melodrama sung with operatic depth and played to a light rock & roll beat; Don Gibson's "I'd Be a Legend in My Time," and "I Can't Stop Loving You," both filled with larger-than-life musical attributes and emotions behind Orbison's extraordinary singing, Orbison treating the former almost like a Verdi aria while a sax solo, the Anita Kerr Singers, and a dense string section hold it in the realm of pop music; and "Bye Bye Love" given the new Orbison treatment and sounding like a country-pop symphony. The material was uniformly strong and consistent, probably due, in part, to the fact that Fred Foster was able to draw from nearly a year's worth of recording activity to assemble the contents of the album, and he also took advantage of the album's stereo release to devise a crisp, discreet, two-channel mix that brought out all of the details of this sound in notably sharp relief, creating one of the earliest stereo rock & roll albums that was actually superior to its mono equivalent. Although it had been years since his last recording, Roy Orbison was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Perhaps as a result of the newfound interest in his music, he was invited to record with the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. Orbison had a renewed sense of purpose, and also began recording material for a new solo album. Collaborating with Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty, Orbison re-creates the feel of his old recordings while sounding modern. His voice sounds as strong as ever, and he is still able to hit the high notes that convey a sad, lonely ache. The highlight of the album is "She's a Mystery to Me," a haunting ballad penned by U2's Bono and the Edge that perfectly plays to all of Orbison's strengths as a singer. Released in the months after his death, Mystery Girl was the highest-charting album of his career and spawned the hit "You Got It" -- it is a shame that Orbison was not around to experience his success. Although Van Morrison's first solo album is remembered for containing the immortal pop hit "Brown Eyed Girl," Blowin' Your Mind! is actually a dry run for his masterpiece, Astral Weeks. Songs like "Who Drove the Red Sports Car" look to that song cycle, even as "Midnight Special" nods to Morrison's R&B past. But it's the agonizing "T.B. Sheets" — all nine-plus minutes of it — that dominates this record and belies its trendy title and pop association. "T.B. Sheets" takes the blues and reinvents it as noble tragedy and humiliating mortality. It's where Van Morrison emerges as an artist. With their first major label release, the Indigo Girls come on strong with an outstanding batch of tunes, watertight harmonies, impeccable musicianship, and flawless production. And entering the folk-rock music scene on the successful heels of R.E.M., Tracy Chapman, and 10,000 Maniacs pushed their sales over the million mark and earned the duo a Grammy for Best Folk Recording. The eponymous release kicks off with the upbeat jangle bounce of "Closer to Fine," a modest hit, all-time fan favorite written by Emily Saliers, and a tune the Girls still play at every concert. A particularly fascinating point is that the Indigo Girls never write songs together, but they compliment each other perfectly. The difference in styles becomes immediately apparent when the more dark and brooding Amy Ray steps up. Her remarkable contributions include "Secure Yourself," "Kid Fears," and "Blood and Fire," spiritual ruminations of life, love, pain, and faith which bury themselves deep inside your core whether invited or not. Weighting the opposite scales, Saliers offers a tender balance to Ray with two beautiful ballads, "Love's Recovery" and "History of Us." (Ray's "Land of Canaan" was once a ballad, but then she heard the Replacements and it became a bit of a rocker.) Chiming in with musical support are Hothouse Flowers, Luka Bloom, and fellow Georgians R.E.M. This self-titled release captures the passion of their youth with voices that are a little cloudy, untamed, and raw, but the power that surges through them suggests a maturity far beyond their years. The same can be said of the songwriting — sheer poetry.
