"Masterpiece?" -- das verkündete zumindest Columbias Anzeigenkampagne, als Imperial Bedroom 1982 erschien. Wenn man sich die Platte anhört, erscheint es gelegentlich wirklich angebrachter, die Betonung auf das Fragezeichen zu legen. Das Album ist sehr gut, an manchen Stellen sogar überraschend gut. Aber was die herzzerreißenden Gefühle betrifft, kommt es an King of America bei weitem nicht heran, und auch Painted From Memory, Costellos Gemeinschaftsproduktion mit Burt Bacharach aus dem Jahre 1998, bleibt als herausragendes Beispiel für elegante Pop-Handwerkskunst unübertroffen. (Wo wir gerade davon sprechen: Letzteres ist auch vom Herzschmerzfaktor her gar nicht so übel.)
Natürlich gibt es hier durchaus auch einige kleinere Lichtblicke, und einen riesengroßen, nämlich das überwältigende "Beyond Belief". Sicher sind auf Imperial Bedroom die Stücke in der Mehrzahl großartig, und doch hat der Bonustrack dieser Rykodisc-Edition, das einfache "From Head to Toe" (eine Coverversion eines Songs von Smokey Robinson and the Miracles), eine stärkere Ausstrahlung als die ganzen anderen Stücke der Platte. --Rickey Wright

Having gotten country out of his system with Almost Blue, Elvis Costello returned to pop music with Imperial Bedroom — and it was pop in the classic, Tin Pan Alley sense. Costello chose to hire Geoff Emerick, who engineered all of the Beatles' most ambitious records, to produce Imperial Bedroom, which indicates what it sounds like — it's traditional pop with a post-Sgt. Pepper production. Essentially, the songs on Imperial Bedroom are an extension of Costello's jazz and pop infatuations on Trust. Costello's music is complex and intricate, yet it flows so smoothly, it's easy to miss the bitter, brutal lyrics. The interweaving layers of "Beyond Belief" and the whirlwind intro are the most overtly dark sounds on the record, with most of the album given over to the orchestrated, melancholy torch songs and pop singles. Never once do Costello & the Attractions deliver a rock & roll song — the album is all about sonic detail, from the accordion on "The Long Honeymoon" to the lilting strings on "Town Cryer." Of course, the detail and the ornate arrangements immediately peg Imperial Bedroom as Costello's most ambitious album, but that doesn't mean it's his absolute masterpiece. Imperial Bedroom remains one of Costello's essential records because it is the culmination of his ambitions and desires — it's where he proves that he can play with the big boys, both as a songwriter and a record-maker. It may not have been a commercial blockbuster, but it certainly earned the respect of legions of musicians and critics who would have previously disdained such a punk rocker. And, perhaps, that's also the reason that he abandoned this immaculately crafted style of work on his next album, Punch the Clock.

Stripping away much of the excess that cluttered Punch the Clock and Goodbye Cruel World, Elvis Costello returned to his folk-rock and pub rock roots with King of America, creating one of his most affecting and personal records. Costello literally took on the album as a return to roots, billing himself by his given name Declan MacManus and replacing the Attractions with a bunch of L.A. session men (although his old band appears on one cut), who give the album a rootsy but sleek veneer that sounds remarkably charged after the polished affectations of his Langer/Winstanley productions. And not only does the music sound alive, but so do his songs, arguably his best overall set since Trust. Working inside the limits of country, folk, and blues, Costello writes literate, introspective tales of loss, heartbreak, and America that are surprisingly moving -- he rarely got better than "Brilliant Mistake," "Glitter Gulch," "American Without Tears," "Big Light," and "Indoor Fireworks." What separates King of America from the underrated Almost Blue is that Costello's country now sounds lived-in and worn, bringing a new emotional depth to the music, and that helps make it one of his masterpieces.

Au20 is a select series of the "sonic bests" from the Rykodisc and Hannibal catalogues.
The Au20 trademark distinguishes audiophile editions of 20-bit digital masters, "noise shaped" from 20-bit to
16-bit, and replicated on 24k gold CDs. To insure the most accurate reproduction of the music, all analog to 20-bit digital conversion in the Au20 series is from the original analog master tapes.

This Au20 CD was mastered from the original Dolby A master tapes. Playback was through a specially-enhanced Ampex ATR-102 using audio cards upgraded by John Musgrave and courtesy of The Complex recording studios. No equalization, compression, limiting or other 'enhancement" of any kind was added during the transfer.
The analog-to-digital conversion was done through a dB Technologies™ AD122 converter in the 20-bit mode, directly to the hard disk of the Sonic Solutions digital mastering workstation.
Once edited into the final form, the program was transferred through the Sony SuperBitmapping process integrated into the Sonic System. This "noise-shaping" process allows the music to be captured in 16-bits while maintaining the optimal signal-to-noise equivalent of 20-bits. This 16-btt "Super Bit Mapped" PCM 1630 master was then used in the production of the Au20 CD.

Super Bit Mapping
In recent years, new research has led to the development of several technologies that dramatically improve digital recording. Among the most notable is the ability to record with 20-bit resolution which provides unprecedented dynamic range and clarity. But these 20-bit master recordings must still be transferred back to 16-bit in order to be used for producing Compact Discs.
During this transfer process, distortion can increase through the practice of cutting-off, or truncating the recording's four least significant bits. Or, in some cases engineers will add "white noise" (called redithering) during this stage, which impairs the music's signal-to-noise.
Super Bit Mapping (SBM) is a sophisticated psycho-acoustic-based system that redistributes transfer noise within the portion of the audio spectrum that is virtually inaudible. With SBM, audiophiles can appreciate the benefits of 20-bit sound on Compact Discs that retain full compatibility with all CD players.

Den Weg aus der Nische hatte Zappa sich bereits auf dem Album-Vorgänger Over-Nite-Sensation gebahnt. Mit deftigen Lyrics und strafferer Musik hatte der Underground-Künstler dort einen Fuß in die Charts bekommen. Apostrophe (´) behält diese Stoßrichtung bei, mit einem Mix aus Blues, Prog- und Rap-Rock, Comedy und R&B.
Kollaborateure von Apostrophe (´) sind der Cream-Bassist Jack Bruce, neben Violinist Jean-Luc Ponty und dem Studio-Über-Schlagzeuger Jim Gordon (Alice Cooper, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan). Highlights sind neben dem Titeltrack das kosmisch-orchestrale “Cosmik Debris“ und der anti-rassistische Gospel-Pop-Rock-Song “Uncle Remus“.

The musically similar follow-up to the commercial breakthrough of Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe became Frank Zappa's second gold and only Top Ten album with the help of the "doggy wee-wee" jokes of "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow," Zappa's first chart single (a longer, edited version that used portions of other songs on the LP). The first half of the album is full of nonsensical shaggy-dog story songs that segue into one another without seeming to finish themselves first; their dirty jokes are generally more subtle and veiled than the more notorious cuts on Over-Nite Sensation. The second half contains the instrumental title cut, featuring Jack Bruce on bass; "Uncle Remus," an update of Zappa's critique of racial discord on "Trouble Every Day"; and a return to the album's earlier silliness in "Stink-Foot." Apostrophe has the narrative feel of a concept album, but aside from its willful absurdity, the concept is difficult to decipher; even so, that doesn't detract from its entertainment value.

This Au20 CD was mastered from the original Dolby A master tapes. Playback was through a specially-enhanced Ampex ATR-102 using audio cards upgraded by John Musgrave and courtesy of The Complex recording studios. No equalization, compression, limiting or other "enhancement" of any kind was added during the transfer.
The analog-to-digital conversion was done through a dB Technologies™ AD122 converter in the 20-bit mode, directly to the hard disk of the Sonic Solutions digital mastering workstation.
Once edited into the final form, the program was transferred through the Sony SuperBitmapping process integrated into the Sonic System.
This "noise-shaping" process allow the music to be captured in 16-bits while maintaining the optimal signal-to-noise equivalent of 20-bits. This 16-bit "Super Bit Mapped" PCM 1630 master was then used in the production of the Au20 CD.

Super Bit Mapping
In recent years, new research has led to the development of several technologies that dramatically improve digital recording. Among the most notable is the ability to record with 20-bit resolution which provides unprecedented dynamic range and clarity. But these 20-bit master recordings must still be transferred back to 16-bit in order to be used for producing Compact Discs.
During this transfer process, distortion can increase through the practice of cutting-off, or truncating the recording's four least significant bits. Or, in some cases engineers will add "white noise" (called redithering) during this stage, which impairs the music's signal-to-noise.
Super Bit Mapping (SBM) is a sophisticated psycho-acoustic-based system that redistributes transfer noise within the portion of the audio spectrum that is virtually inaudible. With SBM, audiophiles can appreciate the benefits of 20-bit sound on Compact Discs that retain full compatibility with all CD players.

The world's most underrated songwriter, although Thompson must tire of hearing it so often. Together with his ex-wife Linda they made a series of quite brilliant albums that garnered heaps of praise and minimal sales. This is another slice of perfection that veers from whimsical fun in 'Wall Of Death' to desperate emotions in 'Shoot Out the Lights', which features the definitive Thompson guitar solo. Critics have often been accused of hyping artists, but try as they may, they can't do it with this one. Time will tell but this album should be in many more homes.

Es wurde das bestverkaufte Album von Richard & Linda Thompson und zugleich das letzte vor ihrer Scheidung. „Shoot Out The Light“ rangiert in den 100 besten Alben des Magazins Rolling Stone auf Platz 9 (ebenso in fast jeder Best Of-Liste), zweifellos das Ergebnis einer berückend schönen Musik zweier natürlich anmutenden Stimmen und wunderbarer Songwritermelodien. Auch Richards Gitarrenspiel erntete besonderes Lob, zu bewundern ist es insbesondere im Titelstück „Shoot Out The Light“. Produziert wurde die Platte von Joe Boyd, bei den Aufnahmen in den Olympic Studios in London waren natürlich auch Clive Gregson, drei Fairport Convention-Veteranen, die Background-Sänger von The Watersons sowie einige Bläser dabei. Frei von typischer Folk-Attitüten flossen auch Rock- und Countryelemente ein, bestechend ist „Shoot Out The Light“ aber durch seine eingängigen und doch erstklassig gespielten Songs von Musikern, die bereits in den 60er Jahren das Publikum zu begeistern verstanden.

The world's most underrated songwriter, although Thompson must tire of hearing it so often. Together with his ex-wife Linda they made a series of quite brilliant albums that garnered heaps of praise and minimal sales. This is another slice of perfection that veers from whimsical fun in 'Wall Of Death' to desperate emotions in 'Shoot Out the Lights', which features the definitive Thompson guitar solo. Critics have often been accused of hyping artists, but try as they may, they can't do it with this one. Time will tell but this album should be in many more homes.
