This 1995 recording captures Abdullah Ibrahim's trio Ekaya live at New York's Sweet Basil jazz club. A master of synthesis, Ibrahim's has an aesthetic that encompasses the traditional melodies of his native South Africa, Eastern modalities, and classical motifs, all fused seamlessly under the rubric of modern jazz. YARONA puts all of Ibrahim's colors on display, with exceptional contributions from bassist Marcus McLaurine and drummer George Johnson.
Ibrahim's technical skills as a pianist are superior, and he veers between delicate impressionism and dense clusters of sound. Most impressive, however, is the artist's stature as a composer. The all-original set list includes his evocative "African River," the uplifting "Mannenberg" (an enduring mega-hit in South Africa), the airy, fractured "Stardance," and "Duke 88" (a tribute to Duke Ellington, who took Ibrahim under his wing at the start of his career). The range of material and the sensitivity of the musicianship here are truly remarkable. A unique and multi-dimensional jazz outing, YARONA is highly recommended.

Cape Town Flowers is an enchanting effort from Abdullah Ibrahim, finding the pianist in a trio setting performing 11 original compositions. With the exception of the nine-minute title track and "Monk In Harlem," most of the album's songs clock in at under five minutes, many under four. Each of the pieces is understated, lovely, and nearly dreamlike. The length of the tracks may make Cape Town Flowers seem like a slight record, but the truth is, that very brevity and the way the songs form a sonic tapestry is exactly what makes the record a modest gem. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

AFRICAN SUITE features a 20-piece string orchestra from the Youth Orchestra of the European Community led by Daniel Schnyder.

Recorded at L'Abbatiale de Payerne, Switzerland from November 12-16, 1997. Includes liner notes by Daniel Schnyder.
African Suite presents Abdullah Ibrahim's regular trio with bassist Belden Bullock and drummer George Gray along with a large string section drawn from the Youth Orchestra of the European Community. Daniel Schnyder crafted the arrangements, which are orchestral reworkings of some of Ibrahim's compositions roughly spanning a 25-year period. The strings serve to heighten the evocative globalism of Ibrahim's work, in which the pianist's South African origin, Islamic faith, longtime European residence, and jazz immersion are incorporated with a dazzling imaginative breadth.
Here perhaps more than ever before, Ibrahim's piano is a subtle tool, coaxing the spare, singable melodies into being and generally hovering over the proceedings like a wise, almost detached presence. Both the pianist and the orchestra get a chance to shine alone, Ibrahim on "Aspen" and the orchestra on "Blanton." The latter, dedicated to the late Ellington bassist Jimmy Blanton, sounds uncannily like a jazz bassist bowing an arco solo.
The rhythm section gets a bit busier on the slow-grooving "Ishmael," the rollicking "Tsakwe," the 6/4 sketch "Damara Blue," and the brooding funk piece "Tintinyana." For sheer eclecticism and catchiness, nothing beats the "All Blues"-style "Barakaat" and the African-soul-jazz finale "The Mountain of the Night." But the strings are integrated more effectively on the calmer numbers, especially "The Call" and an absolutely breathtaking arrangement of "The Wedding." One only wishes something could have been done about the audible hiss on parts of the recording. ~ David R. Adler

Pianist Abdullah Ibrahim has celebrated his South African heritage in music ever since being forced to emigrate from his homeland in the early '60s. Considering that this CD was recorded in Cape Town, South Africa in 1997 and that apartheid is a thing of the past, it is not surprising that Ibrahim's music is even happier than usual. The 15 songs, all originals by the pianist, are played in a continuous performance, including some old favorites ("The Wedding" and "The Mountain") plus a few newer tunes; "Someday Soon Sweet Samba" and "African Street Parade" are particularly joyous and rousing. Ibrahim is joined by bassist Marcus McLaurine, drummer George Gray and (on three numbers) trumpeter Feya Faku, whose entry on the seventh song is somewhat jarring. Overall, this is one of Abdullah Ibrahim's best all-around sets. ~ Scott Yanow

On this unique release, Abdullah Ibrahim combines indigenous music from South Africa with contemporary big band sounds. The German group the NDR Big Band, famous for their work with Chet Baker, Lionel Hampton, Dexter Gordon and others brings this music to life under the fine direction of Dieter Glawischnig.
British and Austrian pianists Steve Gray and Fritz Pauer arranged the charts for these sessions, using a full array of instrumental textures and colors to expand upon the already-passionate music of Ibrahim. The album opens with a "Kramat," which borrows from a traditional Capetown melody. Later, we hear "Mindif," a piece that highlights the subtle, Ellingtonian piano stylings of Ibrahim. The last track, "Duke 88," is a lyrical and swinging homage to the great Duke Ellington. All in all, a cornucopia of musical styles are presented here, but the fiery solos by trumpeter Ingold Burkhardt and flutist Fiete Felsch stand out as the most interesting elements on EKAPA LODUMO.
