90-year-old sonero Maximo Francisco Repilado Munoz Compay Segundo, nicknamed "Pancho," is known for his many years of singing with his own group, Los Compadres, and Miguel Matamoros (also working as a clarinetist). Here he is titled strictly a "backing" vocalist, but he is much more than that, flexibly blending in higher and lower tones with various "lead" singers as Hugo Garzon, Pio Leyva, Felix Valoy, Silvio Rodriguez, Martirio, Omara Portuondo, son Basilio Repilado, and a host of percussionists, acoustic bassists and small percussionists. Segundo also plays a combination guitar/tres called the Armonico, a stringed instrument of his own invention, which is frequently heard atonally strumming as minor spice to the improvisations of others. The vocal-guitar-bass-conga (or bongo) format is exploited in midtempo rhythms throughout these 14 tracks, several of them romance songs. "Tu querias jugar" is the newest "son" song, written by Segundo, a tale of love in vain for a wicked woman, with Garzon's deep lead and the great Elpidio Chappotin's plaintive muted trumpet. The most regret-filled are a lament for one far away with Martirio and Valoy on the weepy bolero "Es mejor vivir asi" and a pining for (beautiful) "Linda Graciela" with young Repilado and trombonist Enrique Bergery. Dour turns to happy on the slow-to-fast Beny More evergreen "Desdichado" ("Unlucky"), with more guitar interplay entering into this tune than the others. "Pepa's Dress," a 1927 son, expresses the colorful nature of Cuban clothing, fawning over said female in her accoutrements. Leyva and Segundo depict a binge of drinking during "La juna del ayer" (with two others), fill "La Ternera/The Calf" with double entendres, and trade lines on the '20s pregon "Frutas del Caney," which talks of hawking fruit at the marketplace. There's also Ernesto Lecuona's invitation to dance on "Para Vigo me voy," the married frustration with "Fidelidad" from Rodriguez, Segundo and Salvador Repilado, and Martirio's stern flamenco-drenched warning ("envy can become a sickness") regarding a departed lover's flight for "Juliancito" with a splendid descarga bridge, the best of the date. Two songs speak of country and home away from home: "Son de negros" is a tribute to Santiago, Cuba inspired by Federico Garcia Lorca, while "Cuba y Espana" relates the two countries' interconnection with a vocal segment, then a full stop, then instruments joining and stopping throughout the piece. Barbarito Torres is included on this one playing the lute as only he can, brilliantly. There's also "La pluma," ...

This 2-CD box set includes music of 28 indigenous cultures from around the world. It includes a 96-page book with chapters on each culture and full-color photographs.
Concentrating on vocal traditions, the two-disc set Voices of Forgotten Worlds delivers cut after cut of wonderful music, frequently in stunning high-fidelity recordings. Producer Brook Wentz' sensitive sequencing minimizes the inevitable discontinuity from one cut to the next. The only flaws would seem to be unavoidable with such a diverse and wide-ranging collection: Individual pieces are too short, and they bear no real relation to one another. Things get off to a rousing start with a Tuvan (south Siberian) song in which the singers form a melody of whistling overtones that careens above their voices. From there the set skips through Japanese, South American, Northern European, Chinese, South Seas, and Australian examples before settling into an insistent Afghan ghazal and a glorious instrumental Newar celebration from Nepal. Performances from Greenland, Mexico, and Azerbaijan give way to the surprising choral singing of the Maori of New Zealand, which seems to bend local tradition with harmonies learned from church hymns. Among the more familiar patterned bells of the Balinese gamelan and otherworldly chanting of Tibetan monks, unique highlights include a hypnotic pan pipe ensemble from the Solomon Islands; a surprisingly gentle chant from the Kayapo (notoriously warlike denizens of the Amazon jungle); a compelling rapid-fire pulse of drums, bells, and a double reed from the Batak people of Sumatra; and a Wodaabe chorus from Niger, whose sinuous, irregular vocal phrases suddenly take form with the addition of hand claps. Rather than displaying various traditions as artifacts to be studied, Ellipsis Arts presents them as music to be enjoyed, an approach that has borne fruit in several of the label's top-notch collections. ~ Ted Greenwald ...........................

Nachdem die verbleibenden Beatles Ringo und Paul gemeinsam mit Yoko Ono und Olivia Harrison an Sir George Martin mit der Bitte herangetreten waren, für eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Cirque du Soleil experimentelle Mixes der Original Masterbänder anzufertigen, hat der legendäre Beatles-Produzent sich mit seinem Sohn Giles Martin unter Nutzung des gesamten Archivs der Beatles-Aufnahmen daran gemacht, Love zusammenzustellen.
Das Ergebnis ist eine völlig neue Herangehensweise an die Musik der Beatles. Mit Hilfe der Mastertapes aus den Abbey Road Studios haben Sir George und Giles eine einzigartige Klanglandschaft erschaffen. Diese Musik entstand für die Show Love, die in Las Vegas läuft, aber gleichzeitig haben wir ein völlig neues Beatles-Album erschaffen, sagt Sir George. Die Beatles haben sich immer für neue Ausdrucksformen interessiert, und für sie ist dies ein neuer Schritt nach vorn. Giles fährt fort: Wir hatten den gesamten Katalog der Beatles auf Band, sowohl vierspurige, achtspurige als auch zweispurige Stücke, und aus dieser Palette von Sounds und Melodien haben wir eine Art Soundbett geschaffen. Die Leute, die die Songs eigentlich aus alten Platten kennen, werden beim Hören des Albums eine völlig neue Erfahrung machen.
