For the follow-up to her groundbreaking debut album, Vega made a wise move by incorporating her band further into the arrangement process. Thus, instead of delving deeper into her own introspective muse, she reaches outward to pursue a musical vision markedly expanded from the friendly folk-rock of the previous album. The dark, brooding influence of Leonard Cohen is felt more strongly here, as songs like the title track and "Night Vision" take the listener into a dark, moody world where unsettling emotions are described with moody, poetic flair.
SOLITUDE STANDING also featured Vega's breakthrough hit "Luka," a startlingly original, masterfully written first-person account of a young boy whose denial is the only way to deal with his parents' physical abuse. The song rightfully established Vega as an artist of the first order, and won her legions of international fans.

The career of the Police was planned, controlled and timed to perfection. The three talented individuals probably always knew that they would attempt to conquer the world and then disappear to pursue their own musical interests. This is the second of their five albums and contains two number 1 hits. Both are interesting little vignettes from the mind of Sting; 'Walking On The Moon', where he pleads 'I hope my legs don't break', and 'Message In A Bottle', which has a similarly desperate theme, with Sting observing 'seems I'm not alone in being alone, 100 billion castaways looking for a home'. Sting's theories do still hold water. .......................

Simultaneously more pop-oriented and experimental than either Ghost in the Machine or Zenyatta Mondatta, Synchronicity made the Police superstars, generating no less than five hit singles. With the exception of "Synchronicity II," which sounds disarmingly like a crappy Billy Idol song, every one of those singles is a classic. "Every Breath You Take" has a seductive, rolling beat masking its maliciousness, "King of Pain" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" are devilishly infectious new wave singles, and "Tea in the Sahara" is hypnotic in its measured, melancholy choruses. But, like so many other Police albums, these songs are surrounded by utterly inconsequential filler. This time, the group relies heavily on jazzy textures for Sting's songs, which only works on the jumping, marimba-driven "Synchronicity I." Then, as if to prove that the Police were still a band, there's one song apiece from Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, both of which are awful, as if they're trying to sabotage the album. Since they arrive on the first side, which is devoid of singles, they do, making the album sound like two EPs: one filled with first-rate pop, and one an exercise in self-indulgence. While the hits are among Sting's best, they also illustrate that he was ready to leave the Police behind for a solo career, which is exactly what he did. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine ...

Viewers understandably traumatized by the birth scene in "Bring On The Night," director Michael Apted's documentary on Sting's first post-Police band, were doubtless relieved to learn that the album of the same name was not the movie soundtrack. Instead, it is an extremely well done concert set taken from Sting's 1985 European tour. The band, featuring Branford Marsalis on sax, moves through a nice selection of Police tunes and songs from Sting's solo debut DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES. Though nothing here eclipses the studio versions, it's all eminently listenable and is distinguished by outstanding musicianship throughout.

This Japanese import collects 18 tracks from Sting's numerous film contributions, few of which ever achieved the popularity of his album cuts. It's an odd assortment that leaves out recent successes such as his Oscar-nominated work on Cold Mountain, and there's nothing here from 1982's excellent Brimstone & Treacle soundtrack, one of the artist's first forays into a solo career.
