Gleichzeitig war dieses Album der Startschuss in die sog. " Virgin Years " dieser Band, welche mit dem Album " Hyperborea " im Jahr 1983 wieder beendet wurden. Waren die ersten vier TD - Alben " Electronic Meditation " (1970), " Alpha Centauri " (1971), " Zeit " (1972) und " Atem " (1973) verhältnismäßig experimentell geprägt, klingt " Phaedra " hingegen melodiöser und ausgereifter und war der wohl wichtigste Grundstein für den in den darauffolgenden Jahren praktizierten Musikstil dieser prägenden Elektronik - Band. Die Besetzung Baumann / Froese / Franke sollte bis zum Jahr 1977 bestehen, bevor PETER BAUMANN aus persönlichen Gründen und musikalischen Meinungsverschiedenheiten mit seinen Bandkollegen TD verließ. Selbst 43 Jahre nach Veröffentlichung ist " Phaedra " ein zeitloses Album mit einer hypnotisch - meditativen Grundstimmung, die mich bis heute bei jedem Hören dieser Scheibe immer wieder auf's Neue fesselt. Sie wurde im November 1973 in The Manor im englischen Shipton-on-Cherwell aufgenommen und am 20. Februar 1974 bei Virgin Records veröffentlicht. Dies ist das erste Tangerine Dream-Album, das seinen nun klassischen Sequenzer-Sound enthält, mit dem das Genre der Berliner Schule ins Leben gerufen wurde. Das Album war der Beginn des internationalen Erfolgs der Gruppe und war ihr erstes Album, das auf dem Virgin-Label veröffentlicht wurde. Es erzielte einen sechsstelligen Umsatz in Großbritannien und erreichte in einem 15-wöchigen Durchlauf [15] Platz 15 der UK-Alben-Charts, praktisch ohne Airplay, nur durch starke Mundpropaganda. Der Grund war, dass wir den Moog-Sequenzer (alle Bass-Noten) zum ersten Mal verwendeten. Das Einstellen des Instruments dauerte jeden Tag mehrere Stunden, da es zu diesem Zeitpunkt keine Voreinstellungen oder Speicherbänke gab. Wir haben jeden Tag von 11 Uhr morgens bis 2 Uhr nachts gearbeitet. Am 11. Tag hatten wir kaum 6 Minuten Musik auf Band. Technisch ging alles schief, was schief gehen konnte. Die Bandmaschine brach zusammen, es kam zu wiederholten Ausfällen der Mischkonsole und die Lautsprecher wurden aufgrund der ungewöhnlich niedrigen Frequenzen der Bässe gestört. Nach 12 Tagen waren wir völlig fertig. Glücklicherweise brachte ein Neustart nach einer zweitägigen Pause auf dem Lande den Durchbruch. 'Mysterious Semblance' wurde am 4. Dezember aufgenommen. Pete und Chris schliefen nach einem langen Tag der Aufnahmesession, deshalb lud ich meine Frau Monique ins Studio ein. Ich rief den Studioingenieur an und nahm es in einem Take auf einem Mellotron mit zwei Tasten auf, während Monique die Knöpfe an einem Phasing-Gerät drehte. Dieses Stück ist genau so, wie es an diesem Tag aufgenommen wurde. Und diese Praxis sollte für den Rest der Sitzung fortgesetzt werden. By the 11th day we barely had 6 minutes of music on tape. Technically everything that could go wrong did go wrong. The tape machine broke down, there were repeated mixing console failures and the speakers were damaged because of the unusually low frequencies of the bass notes. After 12 days of this we were completely knackered. Fortunately, after a two-day break in the countryside a new start brought a breakthrough. 'Mysterious Semblance' was recorded on Dec 4th. Pete and Chris were asleep after a long day's recording session so I invited my wife, Monique, into the studio. I called in the studio engineer and recorded it in one take on a double-keyboarded Mellotron while Monique turned the knobs on a phasing device. Das ganze Gefolge läßt sich zum fröhlichen Zechengelage nieder, der Metbecher kreist, bis alle ermüdet einschlafen, Da stürmen auf einen Hornruf Sárkas ihre streitbaren Gefährtinnen herbei und morden die schlafenden Mannen. Wie auch auf "News Of The World" bedienen sich die vier Bandmitglieder aller möglichen Stilrichtungen und gehen dabei gänzlich verschiedene Wege. Dank der gewaltigen Gitarrensounds von Brian May klingt "Jazz" insgesamt noch größer und schwerer als der Vorgänger. ******************************************************************************************* Rezension: Es gibt bekanntlich immer einen noch größeren Fisch! Gegen "Jazz" jedenfalls wirken die Arrangements auf den Vorgänger-CDs geradezu schlank. Wie "News Of The World" läßt sich das Album nicht auf eine Richtung festlegen, anders als bei jenem aber scheint sich hier alles gleichzeitig abzuspielen. Mercury und May scheinen sich außerdem im Übereinanderlegen von Gesangs- und Gitarrenspuren gegenseitig übertreffen zu wollen, das Album platzt beinahe vor Gimmicks. Aber es funktioniert! So opulent es ist (man bekommt auf Dauer Lust auf einen Kräuterschnaps), so genialisch ist es, vom absurden Opener "Mustapha" an bis zum Schluß. Und der Humor und die Selbstironie, die im weiteren Verlauf des Albums (auf dem bekanntlich "Fat Bottomed Girls" und Fahrräder besungen werden) immer wieder deutlich werden, sind wahrscheinlich auch das Geheimnis: So überwältigend das klingt, es ist eben doch nur ein gigantischer Spaß! Though the band was already well into their "eclectic" mode by this time, the stylistic ventures the band takes on this album bring them even further afield from the heavy rock they're best known for.Freddie Mercury kicks things off with "Mustapha," a nod to his Middle Eastern origins. Queen exhibits a ribald sense of humour on "Fat Bottomed Girls." Mercury indulges his Broadway tendencies to the hilt on "IF You Can't Beat Them" and "Don't Stop Me Now," which sound like they could have come from some obscure '50s musical. The jazzy "Dreamer's Ball" and the mellow, romantic "In Only Seven Days" provide welcome contrast. At a time when digital recording was in its infancy and there was a vogue for having opera singers "cross over" to pop by making albums of Broadway show music, conductor John Mauceri, a master of the crossover field, undertook this "DDD" (digitally recorded, mixed, and mastered) studio cast version of Lerner & Loewe's My Fair Lady with Kiri Te Kanawa in the leading role of "flower girl turned lady" Eliza Doolittle and well-respected British actor Jeremy Irons opposite her as the chauvinistic elocutionist Henry Higgins, accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra. Among the supporting performers were the venerable British actor John Gielgud as Higgins' friend Colonel Pickering and tenor Jerry Hadley as Eliza's paramour, Freddy Eynsford-Hill. The chief attributes of the recording are the various additions to the score (as compared to the original Broadway and London cast LPs and the original soundtrack album), possible due to the increased length of 70 minutes, and Irons' spirited performance. Unlike Rex Harrison, who talked his way through the stage and film productions, Irons introduces a certain limited amount of singing here and there, and he manages to come up with his own independent interpretation of the part, which is somewhat more emotional and less authoritarian than Harrison, but is still true to the character. Conscious that this is a purely audio interpretation, he projects more than he might if on-stage, but in such an oversized part, that works fine. Gielgud hasn't got much to do, but does what he has well; Hadley sings his big song, "On the Street Where You Live," with verve; and Warren Mitchell, as Eliza's father, is suitably roughhewn in his songs, "With a Little Bit of Luck" and "Get Me to the Church on Time." The recording's only real disappointment is Te Kanawa, who, despite an accent coach, manages to get her interpretation backwards.
