„Soul '69", Aretha's bereits sechstes Album für Atlantic Records, war wie ein Bindeglied zwischen Blues, Soul und Jazz. Die große Besetzung mit dem Schwerpunkt Bläser setzte dabei natürlich Impulse: Big Band Jazz. Die mitwirkenden Musiker unterstützten diesen Gedanken: u.a. sind David Newman (sax., flute), Joe Newman (trumpet), Pepper Adams (bariton sax.), Junior Mance (piano), Ron Carter (bass), Kenny Burrell (guitar) und Joe Zawinul (el. piano, organ) zu hören. Aber Aretha Franklin war nun mal „Lady Soul“, aufgewachsen im Gospel und talentiert, wie vielleicht nur Größen wie Billie Holiday oder Sarah Vaughan. Die wunderbare LP wieder auflegen zu können, ist trotz der nicht perfekten Simmabbildung Arethas eine besondere Freude! Klappcover mit neuen Linernotes von John Sinclair.
