Keyboardist Joe Sample, best-known for his work with the Crusaders, was in the process of being one of the founders of "contemporary jazz," an idiom that has since solidified into smooth jazz. Sample emphasized catchy melodies, light funk rhythms, appealing chord changes and a pop sensibility. For this accessible release, Sample is joined by the late legendary guitarist Billy Rogers, bassist Pops Popwell, his old Crusaders drummer Stix Hooper, a horn section and several guest guitarists. All eight tunes (which include "Fly with the Wings of Love" and "Islands in the Rain") are by the leader, who is heard throughout in melodic form, setting up a variety of light grooves that serve as superior background music. ~ Scott Yanow ....................

The until-recently-defunct "Mobile Fidelity Labs" audiophile album vinyl pressings were not only analogue, audiophile masterpieces and connoisseur delights, they have become true pieces of audio history and lore. These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. To this day, many of these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible, without any loss of musical information inherent in the standard practice of mastering from the inferior "production" copies. ........................ DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very wel because PINK FLOYD doesn´t rush anything; the songs are mainly slow and mid-temp, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like ON THE RUN and TIME ...... and especially MONEY (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably PINK FLOYD´s best known work. PINK FLOYD were incredibly talented pioneers and innovators who were a ground-breaking act who were many, many years ahead of their time capable of producing the most devastatingly original and brilliant music ever created. ....................................

Im Jahr 1981, produzierte die Firma Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab acht UHQR (Ultra High Quality Record) LP-Alben. Das zweite, in dieser Serie produzierte Album, war Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon. ...........
Es handelt sich hierbei um eine audiophile Rarität und eine der bestklingendsten Schallplatten die jemals hergestellt wurden. Das original Masterband welches zur Produktion dieses audiophilen Highlights zur Verfügung stand, war von exquisiter Qualität. Was dann die Spezialisten von MFSL daraus machten kann man nur als sensationell bezeichnen. Nie wieder wurde vermutlich solch ein Aufwand zur Herstellung einer LP betrieben (was vor über 20 Jahren für einen horrenden Preis sorgte). Sorgfältigst mit der Halfspeed Schneidetechnik geschnitten und in 140 Gramm Japan Virgin Vinyl gepresst wurden weltweit nur 50000 Exemplare hergestellt.
MFSL Schallplatten wurden aus einem besonderen Kunststoff, mit der Bezeichnung „Japan Vinyl“ hergestellt. „Japan Vinyl“ wurde unter der Verwendung von hoch polimerisierten Kunstharzen, mit einem hohen Anteil an Vinylacetat gefertigt. Die Eigenschaften dieses Werkstoffs sind eine enorme Elastizität, extreme Strapazierfähigkeit und ein exzellenter Signal-Rauschabstand (signal-to-noise-ratio). Der Frequenzgang ist so präzise, dass über einen Bereich von 20Hz – 20kHz, Abweichungen von nur +/- 0,5 dB auftreten. ......................

Distortion: Distortion was so low on MFSL UHQR records that nearly theoretical values were achieved. Low, mid, and high range distortions were improved by 12, 10 and 6 dB or more, respectively.
Frequency Response: Frequency response on MFSL UHQR records is flat. Its accuracy is within plus or minus 0.5 dB, whereas conventional records have a frequency response of plus or minus 3 dB.

........................ DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very wel because PINK FLOYD doesn´t rush anything; the songs are mainly slow and mid-temp, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like ON THE RUN and TIME ...... and especially MONEY (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably PINK FLOYD´s best known work. PINK FLOYD were incredibly talented pioneers and innovators who were a ground-breaking act who were many, many years ahead of their time capable of producing the most devastatingly original and brilliant music ever created. ....................................

Es handelt sich hierbei um eine audiophile Rarität und eine der bestklingendsten Schallplatten die jemals hergestellt wurden. Das original Masterband welches zur Produktion dieses audiophilen Highlights zur Verfügung stand, war von exquisiter Qualität. Was dann die Spezialisten von MFSL daraus machten kann man nur als sensationell bezeichnen. Nie wieder wurde vermutlich solch ein Aufwand zur Herstellung einer LP betrieben (was vor über 20 Jahren für einen horrenden Preis sorgte). Sorgfältigst mit der Halfspeed Schneidetechnik geschnitten und in 140 Gramm Japan Virgin Vinyl gepresst wurden weltweit nur 50000 Exemplare hergestellt.
MFSL Schallplatten wurden aus einem besonderen Kunststoff, mit der Bezeichnung „Japan Vinyl“ hergestellt. „Japan Vinyl“ wurde unter der Verwendung von hoch polimerisierten Kunstharzen, mit einem hohen Anteil an Vinylacetat gefertigt. Die Eigenschaften dieses Werkstoffs sind eine enorme Elastizität, extreme Strapazierfähigkeit und ein exzellenter Signal-Rauschabstand (signal-to-noise-ratio). Der Frequenzgang ist so präzise, dass über einen Bereich von 20Hz – 20kHz, Abweichungen von nur +/- 0,5 dB auftreten. ......................

Recording information: Eastern Sound Studios, Toronto.Photographer: John Reeves.By the mid-1970s, Gordon Lightfoot had become a full-fledged pop star, a staple of AM radio, and a regular denizen of the Billboard charts. While his production sensibilities at the time had expanded a bit by the time of SUNDOWN, he was never a folk purist to begin with, and it's a superficial distinction at best. What's important is that Lightfoot's songwriting acumen actually grew with his fame. "Circle of Steel," for example, is a cutting sociopolitical commentary that he probably wouldn't have been able to turn out a few years earlier. On the other side of the fence, the casual sensuality of the title track would have stuck out like a sore thumb on Lightfoot's earliest, more mannered albums. The easy blend of folk and pop on the hit "Carefree Highway" represents the unique paradigm that was always at the heart of both Lightfoot's gift and his wide appeal. ................

The until-recently-defunct "Mobile Fidelity Labs" audiophile album vinyl pressings were not only analogue, audiophile masterpieces and connoisseur delights, they have become true pieces of audio history and lore. These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. To this day, many of these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible, without any loss of musical information inherent in the standard practice of mastering from the inferior "production" copies. With a restrained yet potent funk band and a few cameos from luminaries in the jazz world, Al Jarreau gets plenty of opportunities to wrap his rubbery, ever-changing timbre around an agreeable collection of tunes, the majority of which he wrote or co-wrote. Of the cover tunes, Jarreau completely transforms Kenny Loggins' 'Wait a Little While,' the Beatles' 'She's Leaving Home' and Otis Redding's 'Dock of the Bay' into personal vehicles for vocal acrobatics, and his own 'Fly' revives his uncanny ability to skitter and sail along with a Brazilian-based rhythm track. Freddie Hubbard puts in a soulful guest appearance on flugelhorn on Dave Frishberg's 'I'm Home' and applies a more outgoing obligato to 'Fly'; Lee Ritenour and Paulinho Da Costa also make appearances on the record. The until-recently-defunct "Mobile Fidelity Labs" audiophile album vinyl pressings were not only analogue, audiophile masterpieces and connoisseur delights, they have become true pieces of audio history and lore. These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. With a restrained yet potent funk band and a few cameos from luminaries in the jazz world, Al Jarreau gets plenty of opportunities to wrap his rubbery, ever-changing timbre around an agreeable collection of tunes, the majority of which he wrote or co-wrote. Of the cover tunes, Jarreau completely transforms Kenny Loggins' 'Wait a Little While,' the Beatles' 'She's Leaving Home' and Otis Redding's 'Dock of the Bay' into personal vehicles for vocal acrobatics, and his own 'Fly' revives his uncanny ability to skitter and sail along with a Brazilian-based rhythm track. Freddie Hubbard puts in a soulful guest appearance on flugelhorn on Dave Frishberg's 'I'm Home' and applies a more outgoing obligato to 'Fly'; Lee Ritenour and Paulinho Da Costa also make appearances on the record. This is one of those albums that's fallen between the cracks of time. Virtually every song here is worth a listen. Crazy Love, In the Heart of the Night, Legend are classics. I can't figure out why a lot of reviewers insist on comparing Poco with the Eagles. I know, they had similar country rock roots. But by the late 70s, the Eagles had formulated a harder-edged sound that had little in common with their first couple of albums. In fact, Legend has more in common with the early Eagle material than than with what the Eagles were doing in 1978, when Poco released this record. So check it out. It's good stuff. ................

Co-founding drummer/singer George Grantham and longtime bassist/singer Timothy B. Schmit were both gone, the latter off to the Eagles. Listening to parts of this album, one gets the sense that, with the arrival of Charlie Harrison (bass, harmony vocals) and Steve Chapman (drums) in the group, Poco was deliberately adopting a change in sound similar to what the Eagles went through when Joe Walsh joined, into much harder rocking territory, at least part of the time. Longtime fans were probably disheartened to hear Rusty Young and Paul Cotton give up any semblance of their country roots on the opening track, "Boomerang," a bracing, heavy rock number (for this band) that didn't sound a great deal like the Poco of previous years. Most of the rest of the album, however, was closer to what one wanted and expected from this band -- "Spellbound" a beautifully lyrical ballad that benefited from Young's instrumental range and his and Cotton's harmonizing, and Cotton's "Barbados" offering similarly alluring musical textures with more of a beat. Cotton's "Heart of the Night," however, dominated everything around it, as one of the most finely crafted songs in the group's history, highlighted by a beautiful sax solo from Phil Kenzie. And then there's "Crazy Love" (composed by Rusty Young), with its soft, ethereal textures, which was a little lightweight for this band but unassuming enough to dominate the adult contemporary charts at the time. These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. Still, Miller's evolution from 1960s white-boy Chicago blues journeyman to '70s Top 40 hit machine was meteoric. ...................................
Building on the success of his mainstream breakthrough The Joker, Miller's mastery of the indelibly catchy pop song yielded not only the radio-staple title track (since successfully revived by Seal), but an almost embarrassing wealth of other deceptively simple, hook-laden songs (including the standout "Wild Mountain Honey" as well as the hit singles "Take the Money and Run" and "Rock'n Me") to make FLY LIKE AN EAGLE play more like a greatest hits album than a standard collection of songs. This is Miller at his '76 pop-perfectionist peak, and one of the decade's most enduring surprises.

Miller forsook his love of the blues for this and its sister project Book Of Dreams. In turning to mainstream pop/rock he became a huge star and developed the knack of delivering high-quality three-minute songs that were perfect for FM radio. The album is linked by Miller's fascination with electronic sounds, sandwiched between the irresistible title track, the Bonnie and Clyde tale of 'Take The Money And Run', the irritatingly simple 'Rock 'n' Me' and the subdued 'The Window', with its quirky lyric 'ask my baby what she wants to be, she says a monkey in a tree'. His baby replies 'there's nothing greater than love', true enough. After all, it was Miller who rhymed 'northern California' with 'girls are warm yeah'. ........

Miller forsook his love of the blues for this and its sister project Book Of Dreams. In turning to mainstream pop/rock he became a huge star and developed the knack of delivering high-quality three-minute songs that were perfect for FM radio. The album is linked by Miller's fascination with electronic sounds, sandwiched between the irresistible title track, the Bonnie and Clyde tale of 'Take The Money And Run', the irritatingly simple 'Rock 'n' Me' and the subdued 'The Window', with its quirky lyric 'ask my baby what she wants to be, she says a monkey in a tree'. His baby replies 'there's nothing greater than love', true enough. After all, it was Miller who rhymed 'northern California' with 'girls are warm yeah'.

The until-recently-defunct "Mobile Fidelity Labs" audiophile album vinyl pressings were not only analogue, audiophile masterpieces and connoisseur delights, they have become true pieces of audio history and lore. These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. To this day, many of these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible, without any loss of musical information inherent in the standard practice of mastering from the inferior "production" copies.
