# Fired by Columbia Records in 1973, Clive Davis took over tiny Bell Records in 1974 and turned it into Arista, determined to re-establish his record-selling credentials. One beneficiary of this was Melissa Manchester, who had made two good, but poor-selling albums for Bell. Davis turned on the money tap, and the result was this L.A.-recorded Vini Poncia/Richard Perry production that seemed determined to turn Manchester into a pop diva. She had demonstrated an eclecticism on her previous records, and she was run through a series of pop styles -- disco on "Party Music," Philly soul on "Just Too Many People" (a Top 4 hit), Stevie Wonder on both "Stevie's Wonder" and Wonder's own "Love Havin' You Around." Returning to pop lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, Manchester reined in the tendency toward sensitive singer/songwriterism she had revealed on Bright Eyes, with the hoped-for commercial result. "Midnite Blue" may have been more obvious and generic a romantic ballad than the beautiful "Inclined" from the previous album, but it was also sexier and had a more pronounced hook and a sweeter production, which, along with Arista's promotional muscle, made it a Top Ten hit and Melissa a gold album. Melissa Manchester biography by Steve Huey, All Music Guide
# MOR singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester, whose father was a bassoonist for the New York Metropolitan Opera, began singing commercial jingles at age 15 and went on to become a staff writer for Chappell Music while attending the High School of Performing Arts. After taking a songwriting class at New York University taught by Paul Simon, Manchester took her talents to the Manhattan club scene, where she was discovered by Bette Midler and Barry Manilow; the two hired her as a backup singer in 1971. She recorded her debut album, Home to Myself, in 1973, co-writing many of the songs with Carole Bayer Sager. 1975's Melissa produced her first Top Ten hit, "Midnight Blue," and set the tone for most of her career with its direct, slickly produced MOR pop sound. She and Kenny Loggins co-wrote the latter's 1978 duet hit with Stevie Nicks, "Whenever I Call You Friend," and the following year, Manchester returned to the Top Ten with "Don't Cry Out Loud." 1980 saw Manchester become the first singer to have two movie themes nominated for Academy Awards (Ice Castles and The Promise); two years later she achieved her highest Billboard singles chart placing with the number five hit "You Should Hear How She Talks About You," which won a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance. Through the '80s and '90s, Manchester has alternated occasional recording with scriptwriting and acting, appearing with Bette Midler in For the Boys and on the television series Blossom as the title character's birth mother. In spring 2004, Manchester returned with her first album in 10 years. When I Look Down That Road, which included collaborations with Beth Nielsen Chapman and Keb' Mo, marked her first proper release with Koch.

These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. To this day, many of these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible, without any loss of musical information inherent in the standard practice of mastering from the inferior "production" copies. This MFSL LP was pressed in Japan before Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs eventually pressed their Lps in the United States. The LP was Half-Speed Mastered with the Ortofon Cutting System from the Original Stereo Master Tapes. This MFSL LP has a special static free, dust free inner sleeve and heavy-duty protective packaging. This LP has been Out of Print for 20 years and a bonafide audiophile?s collectible. ................
Back in 1977, Pablo Cruises /Atlanta June/ and /Whatch Gonna Do/ were frequently on FM. The first two tracks of the A PLACE IN THE SUN, A Place In The Sun and /Whatcha Gonna Do/ are catchy, singable mid-tempoed songs. The them of the next five songs is about love and romance but not in a corny or sickeningly sweet way. /Raging Fire/ is one of the great wedding songs that never was. Its words, sentiment and piano playing are beautiful. The songs Can't You Hear The Music? and /Never Had A Love/ are seamlessly blended together by high energy guitar, piano, and drum playing that sounds great and Cory Lerios crystalline piano playing helps make it one of the albums top 2 or 3 tracks.....................

SLOWHAND was the album which defined the new cool of Eric Clapton, a sultry, laid-back mix of rock and blues, with a heavy dose of country and southwestern regional sounds to leaven the blend. After LAYLA, SLOWHAND was probably Clapton's most popular, fully realized solo disc.The opening number was by J.J. Cale, whose "After Midnight" had been one of the real joys of the guitarist's first solo excursion, ERIC CLAPTON. "Cocaine," with its slow grinding beat, menacing melodic vamp and one-step from perdition lyrics, was the toughest, most rocking number on SLOWHAND, and a major radio hit from the outset.A couple of vocal duets with countryish harmonies set the tone for the rest of SLOWHAND. "Lay Down Sally" was a funky, chicken-fried bit of boogie with a taut, melodic aside from Clapton's twangy Stratocaster, while Don Williams' sweet, soulful "We're All The Way" provided a low-key vehicle for Clapton's tender vocal exchanges with Marcy Levy, as his understated arpeggios toll away in the background. ..........................................

Slowhand is an album by Eric Clapton, released in 1977. It contained three of his most popular singles, the bluesy "Cocaine", the ballad "Wonderful Tonight" and the country-flavoured #3 U.S. hit "Lay Down Sally", as well as other songs that became Clapton classics on their own like "The Core" and "Next Time You See Her". The album proved to be a big success and a step forward after the relative failure of Clapton's previous album, No Reason to Cry. It was both critically and commercially well received, reaching #2 on the Billboard Album Charts, only surpassed by the blockbuster Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. In 2003, the album was ranked number 325 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. ..................

These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. To this day, many of these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible, without any loss of musical information inherent in the standard practice of mastering from the inferior "production" copies. "Cocaine," with its slow grinding beat, menacing melodic vamp and one-step from perdition lyrics, was the toughest, most rocking number on SLOWHAND, and a major radio hit from the outset.A couple of vocal duets with countryish harmonies set the tone for the rest of SLOWHAND. "Lay Down Sally" was a funky, chicken-fried bit of boogie with a taut, melodic aside from Clapton's twangy Stratocaster, while Don Williams' sweet, soulful "We're All The Way" provided a low-key vehicle for Clapton's tender vocal exchanges with Marcy Levy, as his understated arpeggios toll away in the background. ..........................................

Slowhand is an album by Eric Clapton, released in 1977. It contained three of his most popular singles, the bluesy "Cocaine", the ballad "Wonderful Tonight" and the country-flavoured #3 U.S. hit "Lay Down Sally", as well as other songs that became Clapton classics on their own like "The Core" and "Next Time You See Her". The album proved to be a big success and a step forward after the relative failure of Clapton's previous album, No Reason to Cry. It was both critically and commercially well received, reaching #2 on the Billboard Album Charts, only surpassed by the blockbuster Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Emerson, Lake & Palmer perform Mussorgsky's "Pictures At An Exhibition".Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Keith Emerson (keyboards); Greg Lake (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Palmer (drums, percussion).Much was made of early prog-rock's fusion of rock with classical music, but ELP was one of the only bands to take that task seriously, and never more so than on PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION. The well-known Mussorgsky piece is a staple of the classical music diet, and a prime example of "program music," where related sections of a piece combine to tell a story. True to the spirit of the times, ELP attacked "Pictures" with both classically trained respect and rocker irreverence. The album, recorded live in 1971, finds the band turning Mussorgsky's work inside out, not just restructuring it but reinventing it for their rock audience.While sections like "Promenade" and The Hut of Baba Yaga" are essentially electrified, rocked-up versions of the original melodies, the band injects plenty of their own original (but not unrelated) motifs into the piece, including Greg Lake's moody ballad "The Sage" and the self-explanatory "Blues Variation." ELP is to be commended as much for its brash ambition as for its achievement in attempting a Moog-ified revamping of such a well established piece as PICTURES. ..................

Emerson, Lake & Palmer perform Mussorgsky's "Pictures At An Exhibition".Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Keith Emerson (keyboards); Greg Lake (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Palmer (drums, percussion).Much was made of early prog-rock's fusion of rock with classical music, but ELP was one of the only bands to take that task seriously, and never more so than on PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION. The well-known Mussorgsky piece is a staple of the classical music diet, and a prime example of "program music," where related sections of a piece combine to tell a story. True to the spirit of the times, ELP attacked "Pictures" with both classically trained respect and rocker irreverence. The album, recorded live in 1971, finds the band turning Mussorgsky's work inside out, not just restructuring it but reinventing it for their rock audience.While sections like "Promenade" and The Hut of Baba Yaga" are essentially electrified, rocked-up versions of the original melodies, the band injects plenty of their own original (but not unrelated) motifs into the piece, including Greg Lake's moody ballad "The Sage" and the self-explanatory "Blues Variation." ELP is to be commended as much for its brash ambition as for its achievement in attempting a Moog-ified revamping of such a well established piece as PICTURES. ..................

These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. To this day, many of these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible, without any loss of musical information inherent in the standard practice of mastering from the inferior "production" copies. It boasts the beautiful number one R&B/Top Ten pop million-selling ballad "Our Love," as well as radio-aired tracks: the rousing, gospel-ish "Be Thankful," " Just Can't Stay Away," the lushly orchestrated torch number "Aint Nothing Stronger Than Love," and the smooth tropical-flavored "La Costa." This represents the pinnacle of Steely Dan's gradual transition from rock band to their own brand of jazz-influenced white soul. Guitars were replaced by keyboards, and saxophones became more common. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were only interested in spending time in the recording studios, while the fans pined and waited. The result set new standards in recorded excellence, and is regularly used as a hi-fi shop demonstration. The ambitious title track was deemed too difficult for radio play and only the two overtly accessible tracks `Josie' and `Peg', gave them valuable exposure......................
