We Must Believe In Magic" was originally released in mid 1977, & commercially, it was a breakthrough album for Crystal--it peaked at #12 on the Billboard charts & was certified platinum within a year of its original release, largely thanks to the huge, million-selling hit "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue". The album really did deserve the success, because most of the album is great, displaying Crystal at her best--as ever, her vocals are consistently sumptuous, & although she didn't write anything here, her expressiveness is one-of-a-kind & she consistently comes up with just the right treatment to get maximum impact from each track--in other words, she very much makes the songs her own. The aforementioned "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" opens the album--it's somewhat jazz-flavored and it's wonderfully breezy with an irresistible rolling piano part, and it's melancholy, yet not depressing--as good as it is, don't let its commercial success fool you... Not only are there a bunch of other great songs here, but the album is also impressively varied--there's the amusingly dramatic "River Road", the stomping bluesy rocker "Green Door", the wistful ballad "Make A Dream Come True", the somewhat frantic Cole Porter cover "It's All Right With Me", the stately, otherworld-ish title track with hypnotic wordless vocals from Crystal, & the punchy, somewhat sneering "All I Wanna Do In Life", all of which are gems. As much credit as Crystal herself deserves, you also can't deny the excellent job by producer Allen Reynolds--there's lots of neat stuff going on like the clanking percussion, flutes, & phasing on "All I Wanna Do In Life", the cool orchestration on "Make A Dream Come True", a combination of fiddle and biting guitar on "It's All Right With Me", & Moog synthesizer (and god knows what else) on the title track. The weakest track is the somewhat ho-hum ballad "Going Down Slow", but it's still got the cool interplay of the phased guitar line & the orchestration. I have a complaint with this album, & it's the same complaint I have with so many of Crystal's albums--it's too darn short!! Clocking in right around half an hour, it really cries out for a couple more songs. Yes, I'd rather have half an hour of great material than 15 minutes of great material & 25 minutes of dreck--I'm not denying the consistent high quality of this album, but it is on the short side. Still though, this is a highly recommended album. Plus, the album sleeve with the checker-board style of the photograph of Crystal with her increasingly ultra-long hair is smile-inducing. Don't expect to find the Razor & Tie label's CD release of this album at a low price. Tracks from this album regularly crop up on Crystal compilation CDs of which there are a LOT. There are also a lot of vinyl copies around that you can probably get at a very reasonable price so you can hear ALL of the tracks from the album in their original running order. Man kann sich spätestens dann absolut sicher sein, dass ein Album ein echtes Stück Musikgeschichte geworden ist, wenn es Verschwörungstheorien über das Coverfoto gibt. Aber wischen wir die skurrilen Thesen über den „9/11“-Schriftzug einmal beiseite, der angeblich hier über den aus Cornflakes-Packungen nachgebauten Twin Towers schwebt (wenn man das Cover im Spiegel betrachtet), und konzentrieren uns auf das Wesentliche: Die Musik auf „Breakfast In America“. Und da wird einem schnell auch so klar: Hier liegt ein Stück Pop-Rock-Geschichte vor, an dem man einfach nicht vorbeikommt. „Breakfast In America“ ist zwar nach den Verkaufszahlen ohnehin das erfolgreichste Album von Supertramp, es ist aber auch im Besonderen ein deutsches Phänomen: Hierzulande wurden satte fünfhunderttausend Exemplare der Scheibe verkauft - nur in Kanada und den USA waren es mehr, nicht einmal in Supertramps Heimat Großbritannien erzielte das Album ähnliche Umsätze. Und wenn man heutzutage einen vorsichtigen kritischen Blick nach Amerika wirft, dann merkt man: Die Zeit für eine Rückkehr der cleveren Satire auf den American Way of Life, die das Album subtil durchzieht, ist definitiv reif. Das dachte man sich auch bei MFSL, und schenkt uns zu Weihnachten ein grandioses Remastering, das erste rein analoge überhaupt. „Breakfast In America“ bedeutete 1979 für Supertramp den Abschied von den verspielten ProgRock-Anfängen der zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon seit zehn Jahren aktiven Band. Stattdessen konzentrierte man sich auf radiotauglicheres und auf den Punkt gebrachtes Songwriting. Und diese Rechnung ging auf: Die Platte lebt nicht zuletzt vom Kontrast zwischen den beiden Band-Chefs und Songwritern Rick Davies und Roger Hodgson. Davies steuerte neben seiner rauen Stimme und der E-Gitarre auch die harten, kantigen, rockigen und bluesigen Nummern bei („Goodbye Stranger“ oder „Gone Hollywood“), während Hodgsons hohe Pop-Stimme und sein für den Band-Sound so zentrales Spiel auf dem Wurlitzer-E-Piano in seinen textlastigen, oft zynischen Hit-Singles zum Tragen kommen („The Logical Song“ und natürlich der Titelsong). Dazu noch das markante Saxofon- und Klarinettenspiel von John Helliwell und die tighte und ausgefuchste Rhythmusarbeit von Drummer Bob Siebenberg und Bassist Dougie Thomson, und fertig ist der unverwechselbare druckvolle Supertramp-Sound. Das Album erhielt damals zwei Grammys, einen davon für die Arbeit von Ton-Ingenieur Peter Henderson. Henderson gelang es damals, den üppigen Bandsound klar, strukturiert und transparent einzufangen, aber auch einen epischen Klangraum voller Glanzlichter, Größe und Dynamik zu erzeugen. Krieg Wunderlich und Rob LoVerde haben das Ganze nun von den Originalbändern gemastert, und man getrost sagen: So lebendig, weich, warm und dabei nach wie vor druckvoll (man höre und genieße das perfekte Zusammenfließen von Bass und tiefem Piano-Register) hat dieses Album noch nie geklungen. Ein überraschend zeitloser Klassiker, der auch heute noch einfach viel Spaß macht! ********************************************************************************************* Rezension: Es gibt nicht übermäßig viele 70er-Jahre-Pop-Alben, die in der Liga von Fleetwood Macs "Rumours" mitspielen. Zu dieser Auslese zählt die vorletzte echte Supertramp-LP. Mit "Crime Of The Century" hatte die Band um Rick Davies und Roger Hodgson ihren Durchbruch gehabt, den Rest des Jahrzehnts zählte sie zu den zuverlässigsten Vertretern in Sachen anspruchsvoller und gleichzeitig Chart-tauglicher Popmusik. Das Meisterwerk aber war "Breakfast": Hier hatten Supertramp ihre Wurzeln im Prog Rock endgültig überwunden und sich voll und ganz dem Pop verschrieben. Man kann sich spätestens dann absolut sicher sein, dass ein Album ein echtes Stück Musikgeschichte geworden ist, wenn es Verschwörungstheorien über das Coverfoto gibt. Aber wischen wir die skurrilen Thesen über den „9/11“-Schriftzug einmal beiseite, der angeblich hier über den aus Cornflakes-Packungen nachgebauten Twin Towers schwebt (wenn man das Cover im Spiegel betrachtet), und konzentrieren uns auf das Wesentliche: Die Musik auf „Breakfast In America“. Und da wird einem schnell auch so klar: Hier liegt ein Stück Pop-Rock-Geschichte vor, an dem man einfach nicht vorbeikommt. „Breakfast In America“ ist zwar nach den Verkaufszahlen ohnehin das erfolgreichste Album von Supertramp, es ist aber auch im Besonderen ein deutsches Phänomen: Hierzulande wurden satte fünfhunderttausend Exemplare der Scheibe verkauft - nur in Kanada und den USA waren es mehr, nicht einmal in Supertramps Heimat Großbritannien erzielte das Album ähnliche Umsätze. Und wenn man heutzutage einen vorsichtigen kritischen Blick nach Amerika wirft, dann merkt man: Die Zeit für eine Rückkehr der cleveren Satire auf den American Way of Life, die das Album subtil durchzieht, ist definitiv reif. Das dachte man sich auch bei MFSL, und schenkt uns zu Weihnachten ein grandioses Remastering, das erste rein analoge überhaupt. „Breakfast In America“ bedeutete 1979 für Supertramp den Abschied von den verspielten ProgRock-Anfängen der zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon seit zehn Jahren aktiven Band. Stattdessen konzentrierte man sich auf radiotauglicheres und auf den Punkt gebrachtes Songwriting. Und diese Rechnung ging auf: Die Platte lebt nicht zuletzt vom Kontrast zwischen den beiden Band-Chefs und Songwritern Rick Davies und Roger Hodgson. Davies steuerte neben seiner rauen Stimme und der E-Gitarre auch die harten, kantigen, rockigen und bluesigen Nummern bei („Goodbye Stranger“ oder „Gone Hollywood“), während Hodgsons hohe Pop-Stimme und sein für den Band-Sound so zentrales Spiel auf dem Wurlitzer-E-Piano in seinen textlastigen, oft zynischen Hit-Singles zum Tragen kommen („The Logical Song“ und natürlich der Titelsong). Dazu noch das markante Saxofon- und Klarinettenspiel von John Helliwell und die tighte und ausgefuchste Rhythmusarbeit von Drummer Bob Siebenberg und Bassist Dougie Thomson, und fertig ist der unverwechselbare druckvolle Supertramp-Sound. Das Album erhielt damals zwei Grammys, einen davon für die Arbeit von Ton-Ingenieur Peter Henderson. Henderson gelang es damals, den üppigen Bandsound klar, strukturiert und transparent einzufangen, aber auch einen epischen Klangraum voller Glanzlichter, Größe und Dynamik zu erzeugen. Krieg Wunderlich und Rob LoVerde haben das Ganze nun von den Originalbändern gemastert, und man getrost sagen: So lebendig, weich, warm und dabei nach wie vor druckvoll (man höre und genieße das perfekte Zusammenfließen von Bass und tiefem Piano-Register) hat dieses Album noch nie geklungen. Ein überraschend zeitloser Klassiker, der auch heute noch einfach viel Spaß macht! ********************************************************************************************* Rezension: Es gibt nicht übermäßig viele 70er-Jahre-Pop-Alben, die in der Liga von Fleetwood Macs "Rumours" mitspielen. Zu dieser Auslese zählt die vorletzte echte Supertramp-LP. Mit "Crime Of The Century" hatte die Band um Rick Davies und Roger Hodgson ihren Durchbruch gehabt, den Rest des Jahrzehnts zählte sie zu den zuverlässigsten Vertretern in Sachen anspruchsvoller und gleichzeitig Chart-tauglicher Popmusik. Das Meisterwerk aber war "Breakfast": Hier hatten Supertramp ihre Wurzeln im Prog Rock endgültig überwunden und sich voll und ganz dem Pop verschrieben. Erstveröffentlichung war im März 1979. Man kann sich spätestens dann absolut sicher sein, dass ein Album ein echtes Stück Musikgeschichte geworden ist, wenn es Verschwörungstheorien über das Coverfoto gibt. Aber wischen wir die skurrilen Thesen über den „9/11“-Schriftzug einmal beiseite, der angeblich hier über den aus Cornflakes-Packungen nachgebauten Twin Towers schwebt (wenn man das Cover im Spiegel betrachtet), und konzentrieren uns auf das Wesentliche: Die Musik auf „Breakfast In America“. Und da wird einem schnell auch so klar: Hier liegt ein Stück Pop-Rock-Geschichte vor, an dem man einfach nicht vorbeikommt. „Breakfast In America“ ist zwar nach den Verkaufszahlen ohnehin das erfolgreichste Album von Supertramp, es ist aber auch im Besonderen ein deutsches Phänomen: Hierzulande wurden satte fünfhunderttausend Exemplare der Scheibe verkauft - nur in Kanada und den USA waren es mehr, nicht einmal in Supertramps Heimat Großbritannien erzielte das Album ähnliche Umsätze. Und wenn man heutzutage einen vorsichtigen kritischen Blick nach Amerika wirft, dann merkt man: Die Zeit für eine Rückkehr der cleveren Satire auf den American Way of Life, die das Album subtil durchzieht, ist definitiv reif. Das dachte man sich auch bei MFSL, und schenkt uns zu Weihnachten ein grandioses Remastering, das erste rein analoge überhaupt. „Breakfast In America“ bedeutete 1979 für Supertramp den Abschied von den verspielten ProgRock-Anfängen der zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon seit zehn Jahren aktiven Band. Stattdessen konzentrierte man sich auf radiotauglicheres und auf den Punkt gebrachtes Songwriting. Und diese Rechnung ging auf: Die Platte lebt nicht zuletzt vom Kontrast zwischen den beiden Band-Chefs und Songwritern Rick Davies und Roger Hodgson. Davies steuerte neben seiner rauen Stimme und der E-Gitarre auch die harten, kantigen, rockigen und bluesigen Nummern bei („Goodbye Stranger“ oder „Gone Hollywood“), während Hodgsons hohe Pop-Stimme und sein für den Band-Sound so zentrales Spiel auf dem Wurlitzer-E-Piano in seinen textlastigen, oft zynischen Hit-Singles zum Tragen kommen („The Logical Song“ und natürlich der Titelsong). Dazu noch das markante Saxofon- und Klarinettenspiel von John Helliwell und die tighte und ausgefuchste Rhythmusarbeit von Drummer Bob Siebenberg und Bassist Dougie Thomson, und fertig ist der unverwechselbare druckvolle Supertramp-Sound. Das Album erhielt damals zwei Grammys, einen davon für die Arbeit von Ton-Ingenieur Peter Henderson. Henderson gelang es damals, den üppigen Bandsound klar, strukturiert und transparent einzufangen, aber auch einen epischen Klangraum voller Glanzlichter, Größe und Dynamik zu erzeugen. Krieg Wunderlich und Rob LoVerde haben das Ganze nun von den Originalbändern gemastert, und man getrost sagen: So lebendig, weich, warm und dabei nach wie vor druckvoll (man höre und genieße das perfekte Zusammenfließen von Bass und tiefem Piano-Register) hat dieses Album noch nie geklungen. Ein überraschend zeitloser Klassiker, der auch heute noch einfach viel Spaß macht! ********************************************************************************************* Rezension: Es gibt nicht übermäßig viele 70er-Jahre-Pop-Alben, die in der Liga von Fleetwood Macs "Rumours" mitspielen. Zu dieser Auslese zählt die vorletzte echte Supertramp-LP. Mit "Crime Of The Century" hatte die Band um Rick Davies und Roger Hodgson ihren Durchbruch gehabt, den Rest des Jahrzehnts zählte sie zu den zuverlässigsten Vertretern in Sachen anspruchsvoller und gleichzeitig Chart-tauglicher Popmusik. Das Meisterwerk aber war "Breakfast": Hier hatten Supertramp ihre Wurzeln im Prog Rock endgültig überwunden und sich voll und ganz dem Pop verschrieben. Mit einer Perfektion, die nach wie vor Staunen macht. Der "Logical Song" ist nur ein Hit unter vielen.
