********************************************************************************************* ********************************************************************************************* Description Yarlung Records - YAR77612-006 - 180 Gram Virgin Vinyl - Mastered By Steve Hoffman & Bernie Grundman - Pressed in Germany Executive Producer: Lucile Grieder Sophisticated Lady jazz quartet pays homage to the Great Tradition of American Jazz but most of their repertoire is written by members of the quartet. Unlike the majority of contemporary jazz recordings, which are carefully and surgically patched together in postproduction, this album remains raw and fresh. These tracks are complete takes, “live to tape,” without editing. The music on this recording is how Sophisticated Lady plays without the help of digital manipulation. Yarlung makes recordings in concert halls, not studios; our albums capture the sound of our musicians playing in real acoustic spaces. When the members of Sophisticated Lady quartet first played in Cammilleri Hall their eyes lighted up and excitement built. They responded to the beautiful sound in the hall immediately, and the acoustics enabled Yarlung to record this album with our characteristically minimalist approach. Sophisticated Lady Jazz Quartet rehearsed and performed some of these tunes before our concert and recording but many are the first time through; the quartet discussed the tunes and who would take what solo in which order but without rehearsal. I wanted the intensity of raw improvisation. This is possible when superb musicians tackle new material together, listening carefully to each other and playing as a single organism. Right before we recorded For Sebastian, for example, I played the opening of Variation 25 from Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” on the piano. Misha led the quartet’s improvisation from there. Music cannot get fresher than this. Many thanks to Altea Reed, Niazayre Bates and Kaja Grujic for frolicking in the surf of the Pacific Ocean for us on our record jacket. You certainly take us back to the 1950s Cool Jazz Era. (Niazayre came up with the idea with her father, Yarlung’s photographer Cooper Bates.) –Bob Attiyeh, producer Executive Producer: Lucile Grieder Producer and Recording Engineer: Bob Attiyeh Mastering Engineers: Steve Hoffman & Bob Attiyeh Vinyl Mastering: Bernie Grundman Microphone Preamplification: Elliot Midwood AKG C24 & C12 microphones: Gearworks Pro Audio Steinway technician: Robert Koning Graphic Layout: MikeDesign Cooper Bates Photography Musicians Misha Adair Bigos piano JJ Kirkpatrick trumpet Gary Wicks bass Andrew James Boyle drums Side A: Bicycles Los Barriles *********************************************************************************************** Sophisticated Lady Jazz Quartet – Simpler Times (LP) 🔍 Sophisticated Lady | Simpler TimesSophisticated Lady | Simpler Times Sophisticated Lady | Simpler Times Gary Wicks | Bass Misha Adair Bigos | Piano JJ Kirkpatrick | Trumpet Andrew Boyle | Drums Sophisticated Lady | Simpler Times Sophisticated Lady | Simpler Times Gary Wicks | Bass Misha Adair Bigos | Piano JJ Kirkpatrick | Trumpet Andrew Boyle | Drums Sophisticated Lady Jazz Quartet – Simpler Times (LP) SOPHISTICATED LADY JAZZ QUARTET SIMPLER TIMES German Audiophile Pressing High Resolution Virgin Polycarbonate VIEW ALBUM BOOKLET Artist Pages: Andrew Boyle | Misha Bigos | JJ Kirkpatrick | Gary Wicks | Sophisticated Lady Sophisticated Lady Jazz Quartet - Simpler Times (CD) quantity SKU: YAR65006 Simpler Times Share this: Description Sophisticated Lady’s “Simpler Times was recorded in The Brain and Creativity Institute’s Cammilleri Hall at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Randy Bellous, executive producer A traditional jazz quartet rooted in the sounds, styles and history of jazz, Sophisticated Lady brings a fresh approach to this music. With a mix of original compositions and new interpretations of classic repertoire this quartet has a sound and aesthetic that is both familiar and new. Sophisticated Lady formed when the musicians met during their graduate studies at USC. “Kudos to Sophisticated Lady for some of the most intelligent and soulful playing I’ve heard in a long while. Mr. Wicks is clearly the Stephane Grappelli of the bass. Mr. Boyle’s atomic clock accuracy was outshone only by his remarkable sensitivity and nuanced “drumist” vocabulary. Mr. Kirkpatrick’s winsome lines and lightning-fast coloratura took us beyond the trumpet and through the gamut of melody-instrument domains. And Mr. Bigos’ hands fell lacelike over his ivories with the finesse and speed of traditional Portuguese tatting amid a rainbow of colored threads. The ensemble’s inspired compositions showcased a raft of fresh voices that we must have more of.” –Peter Rutenberg, Grammy-winning conductor and producer “Look out Brubeck, Sophisticated Lady’s remarkable debut should perhaps be re-titled TAKE ONE. Why? Each tune was captured in one take! The 60+ minute CD also celebrates Yarlung’s audiophile venture into JAZZ with a splatter of Chet Baker’s seductive, kicked-back Californication daubed with a drizzle of Miles at his mellowest. No matter how busy your day, an evening spin through this one will definitely move your mood.” –David Thomson, Record Collector News **************************************************************************************************

When they do, it is lovely to hear. The recording is natural and neutral with a bullet. I hear no tinkering or sweetening that does not belong there. Definition is top notch. Ambient cues, imaging solidity, and airiness are state of the art. The soundstage is huge and lifelike and you will be drawn into it I could easily hear the size of the venue.Though recorded live, the audience did not interrupt any of the performance and was well behaved. I really liked the “recorded before a live audience” vibe. Positive Feedback 180-gram vinyl, 45 RPM Note: This LP contains the first four numbers from the concert, not all eight appearing on the CD version. Pianist Yuko Mabuchi, Del Atkins, bass, and Bobby Breton, drums, performed for a full house at the Brain and Creativity Institute's intimate Cammilleri Hall on March 31, 2017. Yarlung recorded this classic performance in this intimate jewel of a concert hall. Yuko, Del and Bobby performed as a cohesive unit, and subsequent concert bookings will no doubt spread their music around the world. Jeff Wilson captures the spirit of this concert, and the sound of the Trio's debut Yarlung album, in his review for The Absolute Sound: "If Mabuchi's playing can be described as tasteful, economical, and lyrical, it should also be noted that her rapid single-note runs are impeccably executed. The performances benefit from an exceptionally realistic recording that stands out for its in-the-room ambiance and tonal clarity." Other audiophiles and jazz buffs have praised Yuko's work in myriad publications. Positive Feedback's Robert H. Levy, posting to Yarlung News, enthuses "Yuko Mabuchi plays the ivories with the touch of an angel and the understanding of an artist many times her young age. She is backed by seasoned musicians with strong drive plus an acute sense of playing with and not over the pianist. This is Yarlung's third jazz album recorded like you wish all performances were recorded: Listening is just like being there. All that's missing here is the expensive tickets and sticky floor!" . Dr. Antonio Damasio generously invited Yarlung back to the Brain and Creativity Institute's Cammilleri Hall at USC for this concert and recording. (2015) .......... *********************************************************************************************** .......... The Martins knew they wanted to support Yuko further. And with help from David B. Levinson, the Martins underwrote Bernie Grundman’s 45RPM pressing of the first half of this album on vinyl. Please see Yuko Mabuchi Trio’s CD page for more information and liner notes about the entire project. This valiant team has also underwritten Volume 2, which will be released later. Yuko dedicated this release to the 25th Anniversary of the Los Angeles and Orange County Audio Society, the largest association of audiophiles on the planet, and to the 70th Birthday of Robert H. Levi, our society’s illustrious President and CEO. Thank you Bob Levi, Diane, Craig, David, Yuko, Del and Bobby for giving us so much to celebrate. The performances benefit from an exceptionally realistic recording that stands out for its in-the-room ambience and tonal clarity. –Jeff Wilson, The Absolute Sound The youthful Yuko’s jazz performances on the piano are remarkably mature, as are her accompanists on the double bass and drums. …the presence of the recording is uncannily real. –Neville Roberts, The UK’s Hi-Fi Choice This live recording is an awe-inspiring work of art. Pianist Yuko Mabuchi is as exciting on recording as she is in person. Here is a production that sparkles with improvisational creativity, energy, and the piano talents of a young and developing super star. This is a soulful CD, combining cultures, like serving grits and gravy with delicious miso soup. This talented lady and her trio are a force of nature that bring musical excellence and energetic excitement to an unforgettable jazz production. –Dee Dee McNeil Yuko Mabuchi takes command of both her instrument and the listener’s ears from the first stroke of the album’s opener … the live album is a must-own for piano trio aficionados and jazz lovers of all stripes. A tremendous highlight of the album is… “On Green Dolphin Street.” Pitched in Bill Evans’ preferred key of E-flat…. Dave Brubeck himself would have applauded the tight interplay of time between one half of the head, presented in a heavy ¾ that alternates sweetly with the straight ‘four-on-the-floor’ 4/4 of the next four bars of the same phrase…. Mabuchi, delicious bassist Del Atkins, and tasty drummer Bobby Breton make it new all over again…. Mabuchi’s right hand is the star of each of her solo flights. Clean, precise, and crisp like forebears Teddy Wilson, Marian McPartland, and Tommy Flanagan, but deeply harmonically and rhythmically inspired like the mentioned Evans… I am impressed with the wonderful quality of this recording. My former student, now a fully matured young artist, has evolved in every aspect: touch, rhythm, groove feeling, dynamics, everything. The piano is singing and the heart and the sound are directly connected. I was impressed with the high degree of professionalism and expertise captured in this live concert, including the beautiful balance with the drums and bass. Ms. Mabuchi’s arrangements are sophisticated and cool. I can now listen to Yuko Mabuchi as a peer, one musician to another. –Kunihiro Kameda, Kyoto Cole Porter: What Is This Thing Called Love from Cole Porter’s musical Wake Up and Dream premiered by Elsie Carlisle in London in March of 1929. Frances Shelley sang the tune in the Broadway premiere in December of the same year. Famous recordings include those by Billie Holiday, Bill Evans, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Anita O’Day, Julie London and Wynton Marsalis. Mark Lehman: Valse Noire Cincinnati composer and writer Mark Louis Lehman follows some of his compositional heroes, Hindemith, Bartók, Piston and Martin, with music both insightful and intimate. Here Yuko Mabuchi improvises with her trio on Lehman’s opening tune of Valse Noire, originally written for solo piano. Bronisław Kaper: On Green Dolphin Street Miles Davis made this tune world famous in his 1958 recording, but Kaper wrote this tune in 1947 for the film Green Dolphin Street. Also recorded by Ahmad Jamal, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and a long list of other famous interpreters. Sara Bareilles: Seriously Bareilles wrote Seriously for the singer Leslie Odom Jr. for a special session on This American Life. Yuko arranged this captivating tune and its nuances of deep humanity for the Trio. They performed it for the first time in Cammilleri Hall during our Yarlung concert. Yuko Mabuchi moved to the United States from her native Japan only recently, but when she plays American jazz she speaks the language perfectly. I love Yuko’s sense of rhythm and melody, and her improvising feels like she was born in Detroit or New York City. Her technique reminds me of some of Yuko’s music idols like Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock and Monty Alexander. But beyond her talent for traditional jazz, one can also hear flavors of American R&B, Hip-Hop and Blues, which Yuko loved as a teenager. This album’s associate producer and Yarlung special advisor Billy Mitchell describes Yuko’s playing as “funky from the heart,” and he means that as an enormous compliment. Yuko was born in Fukui, on the west coast of Japan, north of Kyoto. Dr. Antonio Damasio generously invited us back to the Brain and Creativity Institute’s Cammilleri Hall at USC for this concert and recording, where Yarlung recorded our first jazz albums with Sophisticated Lady jazz quartet. The superb concert hall acoustics and the cozy 90 seat size make Cammilleri ideal for all sorts of music but especially nice for an intimate jazz concert like this. If only more jazz clubs sounded like Cammilleri Hall! –Bob Attiyeh, producer *****************************************************************************************
