Was muss das für ein Augenblick für Larry Appelbaum gewesen sein, als er in der Library Of Congress (der größten öffentlich zugänglichen Sammlung von Konzertaufnahmen und Radiomitschnitten in den USA) auf die Bänder des Konzertes vom 29. November 1957 in der Carnegie Hall gestoßen ist und sie anhören durfte! Zu lesen war auf dem Tape nur T. Monk und das Datum plus Aufnahmeort, was er dann hörte, war das geniale Konzert der Stars Thelonious Monk und John Coltrane. Dass es fast 50 Jahre dauerte, bis die Jazzwelt diese Musik wieder hören darf, ist schon sensationell genug. Das Besondere aber ist natürlich die Musik: Monk spielte wie immer feinsinnig nuanciert und ausdrucksstark, Coltrane brillierte mit genialen Phrasen, die direkten Bezug zu Monks Kompositionen fanden. Label: Mosaic......(Classic Records) Audiophile LP - (Classic Records-Mono, 180 g)..... ************************************************************************************************ Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall ist ein Live-Album des Thelonious Monk Quartets mit John Coltrane, das 1957 aufgenommen, aber erst 2005 veröffentlicht wurde. Die Aufnahmen stammen von einem Benefiz-Konzert vom 29. November 1957 beim "Thanksgiving Jazz", welches Kenneth Lee Karpe für das Morningside Community Center in Harlem produzierte. Neben Monk und Coltrane traten u. a. Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins und Chet Baker mit Zoot Sims auf. Die Aufnahmen von Voice of America dokumentieren zwei Sets von Monks Quartett mit Coltrane während des Konzerts, ein frühes Set mit den Stücken 1–5 und ein etwas entspannteres Set mit den Stücken 6–9, die allerdings nicht vollständig erhalten sind. Die Bänder waren in der Library of Congress archiviert, wo sie bis zu ihrer Wiederentdeckung im Jahre 2005 aufbewahrt wurden. Die Aufnahmen hat Produzent Michael Cuscuna mit dem Sohn Monks, Thelonious Sphere Monk, Jr., restauriert. Die Aufnahmen wurden von der Kritik hoch gelobt. Die Zeitschrift Newsweek nannte die Aufnahmen das „musikalische Äquivalent zur Entdeckung des Mount Everest“ und Amazon nannte es die „ultimative Definition von Klassik“. Das Magazin Rolling Stone wählte das Album 2013 in seiner Liste Die 100 besten Jazz-Alben auf Platz 8.[1] Durch das Album hat sich der Umfang der veröffentlichten Dokumente der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Monk und Coltrane beachtlich vergrößert. One hundred forty-five tracks in all (including plenty of unissued goodies) tab this as the ultimate collection for Milburn fans. He boogied like a champ at his first L.A. date for Aladdin with a thundering "Down the Road Apiece" and rocked equally hard a decade later down in New Orleans when he was re-cutting "Chicken Shack Boogie" with the crew at Cosimo's. Their very notable and highly original Capitol recordings of 1949 -- with the quiet metronomic rhythm section, advanced melodic improvising, and reharmonizations -- stood apart from the typical bop of the period. By 1955, when the earliest performances on this 1997 limited-edition, 10-LP set were recorded, the trio was not working together very often; in fact, Tristano was mostly functioning as a teacher, only surfacing for occasional records and club dates. Despite the title of the box, Tristano, Konitz, and Marsh never all appeared on the same Atlantic record. However, their individual projects and collaborations during the era were of consistently high quality. Included on the set are a live quartet date with Konitz and Tristano, a couple of the pianist's solo and trio sessions (including a few controversial items where he overdubbed and even sped up piano parts), several Konitz quartet sets (with such sidemen as pianists Sal Mosca and Jimmy Rowles, and guitarist Billy Bauer), a Marsh trio/quartet album, and a stimulating meeting between Konitz and Marsh (with Mosca and Bauer) in a sextet. Long misunderstood by critics and fans alike, the major part of his recorded legacy has been out-of-print- for decades and only through a project like Mosaic's could we have ever expected to have had all of Giuffre's important works so expertly collected in one package. Giuffre has long been associated with the cool sounds emanating from the West coast. A very rewarding bonus, the next three selections find Giuffre as guest artist with the Modern Jazz Quartet and three more catch the clarinetist strutting his stuff with an all-star group (including Pee Wee Russell, Rex Stewart, George Wein, Oscar Pettiford, and Connie Kay) assembled for a 1956 concert. It makes for a fascinating listen to compare Giuffre's work here with that done under his own auspices. Clearly, those who have said that he works under a limited technique and projects a narrow range of emotions will find themselves mistaken, for Giuffre is at his most expressive best on these performances. Prized by those who have some familiarity with the man's music are the next sessions that feature a changing set of trios known collectively as the Jimmy Giuffre Three. A self-titled date from 1956 features guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ralph Pena and includes such classics as "Voodoo" and "The Train and the River". Of special interest are eight performances from another edition of the Three that put Jim Atlas at the bass helm, all but two cuts being previously unissued. The next three albums, Trav'lin' Light, The Four Brothers Sound, and Western Suite document the trio of Giuffre, Hall, and Bob Brookmeyer. Arguably, this music is the most rewarding due to the intricate interplay among Giuffre and Brookmeyer. It's amazing that these records didn't receive more attention when they were originally released because they are so creative, yet also very listenable. The Four Brothers Sound also sports Giuffre providing a complete saxophone quartet through his overdubbing of the various parts. Finally, one of the highlights of the set is left for last. Believe it or not, Giuffre decided to make an album of his own arrangements of pieces from the Broadway musical The Music Man. What could have been pure mediocrity in lesser hands turns into an ingenious treatment of some memorable tunes scored for a pianoless group that features three trumpets, three saxophonists, bass, and drums. If there was any question as to how significant a writer Giuffre is, affirmations are abundantly provided via this oft-overlooked classic. Although it may seem redundant to mention for the initiated, Mosaic's presentation here is nothing short of perfection. A full-sized box holds the discs and deluxe 16-page booklet that includes many choice photos from a variety of sources. Instead of presenting the selections in strict chronological order, Mosaic has wisely chosen to group the selections based on instrumentation. It includes three sessions recorded between 1957 and 1960—Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain—which are among the greatest jazz orchestral works ever recorded. With Evans leading a 19-piece band complete with French horns, tubas and woodwind, Davis takes center stage as the only soloist. The music is moody and introverted, and the finely woven textures of Evans's arrangements provide a perfect backdrop for Davis's reticent phrasing and vibratoless tone. ................................
