Wie bei den Originalaufnahmen wurden auch zum Abspielen der Mastertapes und für das Schneidesystem ausschließlich Röhrengeräte verwendet. Authentischer geht's kaum. Das selbstbetitelte Debüt-Album der "Doors" ist mit dem schnöden Wort "Klassiker" wirklich nur unzureichend beschrieben. Es gehört definitiv zu den besten und bedeutendsten Rock-Alben überhaupt, und zu den seltenen Platten, die wirklich jeder zu Hause haben sollte. Als die vier Musiker 1966 ins Studio gingen, waren die Songs, die auf dieses Album kommen sollten, bereits durch die harte Prüfung des Live-Betriebs gegangen. Bereits ein knappes Jahr lang waren die "Doors" die Haus-Band des L. A. - Clubs "Whisky a Go Go", und ihr erstes Album bestand aus den bewährtesten Songs ihres abendlichen Live-Sets. Diese Bewährungsprobe ist sicher für die enorme Energie der Platte mitverantwortlich, und für die nahezu perfekt ausgewogene und abgestimmte Auswahl und Abfolge der Tracks. The Doors was born after Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek — who'd met at UCLA's film school — met again, unexpectedly, on the beach in Venice, CA, during the summer of 1965. Although he'd never intended to be a singer, Morrison was invited to join Manzarek's group Rick and the Ravens on the strength of his poetry. A truly authentic reissue project, the masters were recorded on tube equipment, and the tape machine used for the transfer of these releases is a tube machine, as is the cutting system. Tubes baby! Originally released in 1967 Ray Manzarek, keyboards Jim Morrison, vocals John Densmore, drums Robby Krieger, guitar Technical notes about the recording process by Doors producer/engineer Bruce Botnick: "Throughout the record history of the Doors, the goal between Paul Rothchild and myself was to be invisible, as the Doors were the songwriters and performers. Our duty was to capture them in the recorded medium without bringing attention to ourselves. Of course, the Doors were very successful, and Paul and I did receive some acclaim, which we did appreciate. "If you listen to all the Doors albums, no attempt was made to create sounds that weren't generated by the Doors, except for the Moog Synthesizer on Strange Days, although that was played live in the mix by Jim, but that's another story. The equipment used was very basic, mostly tube consoles and microphones. Telefunken U47, Sony C37A, Shure 56. The echo used was from real acoustic echo chambers and EMT plate reverb units. In those days, we didn't have plug-ins or anything beyond an analogue eight-track machine. All the studios that we used, except for Elektra West, had three Altec Lansing 604E loudspeakers, as that was the standard in the industry, three-track. On EKS-74007, The Doors, we used four-track Ampex recorders and on the subsequent albums, 3M 56 eight-tracks. Dolby noise reduction units were used on two albums, Waiting For The Sun and The Soft Parade. Everything was analogue, digital was just a word. We didn't use fuzz tone or other units like that but created the sounds organically, i.e. the massive dual guitar solo on "When The Music's Over," which was created by feeding the output of one microphone preamp into another and adjusting the level to create the distortion. The tubes were glowing and lit up the control room. Während der frühen 1960er Jahre wurden die Everest-LPs dreikanalig auf 35mm Magnetfilm aufgenommen. Die Verwendung von Magnetfilm ermöglichte eine größere Klangtreue und weniger Nebengeräusche als das Standard 1/4" Magnetband. Die Firma Westrex konstruierte eine Spezialausrüstung entsprechend den Wünschen von Everest, um die Möglichkeiten auch voll zu nutzen. Schneller Vorlauf in die heutige Zeit: Analogue Productions lässt diese Kollektion wieder auferstehen durch eine Serie von Neuveröffentlichungen mit vorerst 10 Titeln. Bernie Grundman hatte seinerzeit für die Neuauflagen Lackfolien sowohl mit 33 als auch 45rpm geschnitten die 45rpm-Versionen wurden jedoch niemals veröffentlicht! Jedes Set von zwei LPs steckt in einem Stoughton Printing Klappcover mit von Hand aufgebrachtem Deckblatt, an der typischen Falzung erkennbar, und zeigt die originale Artwork incl. des Everest Records Markenzeichens. Beide LPs stecken zudem zu ihrem Schutz in einer Klarsichthülle. In the case of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, however, it was the composer himself who underestimated its musical and artistic value. Tchaikovsky had completed his Fourth Symphony in 1877. It was a work of which he was always very proud - "our symphony" was the way he often referred to it when corresponding with his benefactress, Nadejda von Meck. The Fifth Symphony was at first considered a failure by the composer after its first few performances were poorly received. Further performances proved to the composer and the critics that, in fact, this great Symphony was worthy of further consideration and ultimately widespread acceptance. Sie kennen sicher die längst legendäre LP "Hope" von Huge Masekela mit dem so beliebten Stück "Stimela (The Coal Train)", bei der ein Zug musikalisch so lebendig dargestellt wird und klanglich absolut fasziniert. So etwa dürfen sich nun auch Klassikliebhaber fühlen, wenn sie das Stück "The Little Train Of The Caipira" (aus Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2). Schon hier zeigt Goosens, welches Volumen in einem Orchester steckt, vom satten Bassfundament (das den Tieftöner gewaltig beschäftigt!) bis zum filigranen Ausgestalten des Zuges, der die Arbeiter durch die Provinzen von Sao Paolo geschippert. Dieses Stück schrieb der Brasilianer Heitor Villa-Lobos im Jahre 1931 und ist ein echtes musikalisches wie klangliches Juwel. Dabei hat diese LP noch zwei traumhafte Stücke zu bieten, nämlich die beiden Ballet Suiten "Estancia" und "Panambi" von Alberto Ginastera. Der argentinische Komponist erinnert mit seinen sehr lebendig und quirlig wie auch folkloristisch geprägten Werken an Bartok, hat aber natürlich eine typisch südamerikanische Prägung. Heitor Villa-Lobos „Bachianas Brasileiras“ sind kunstreiche Verschmelzungen barocker Formen und Satztechniken mit moderner Orchesterklangsprache und brasilianischer Folklore. Und wenn man auch im vierten Satz der zweiten Bachiana von 1930, „The Little Train Of The Caipira“, zunächst vergeblich nach barocken Anklängen suchen mag, so bringt einen doch die Satzbezeichnung auf die richtige Spur: „Toccata“. Direkt vom 35mm Filmband gemastert von Bernie Grundman über seine röhrenbetriebene Schneidemaschine. *********************************************************************************************** Rezension: Das "Sacre du Printemps" (um den französischen Originaltitel auch noch zu nennen) ist bekanntlich das Werk, mit dessen berüchtigter Uraufführung im März 1913 die Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts für viele erst begann. Es hat, auch wenn es in der Regel nicht mehr zu Saalschlachten während der Aufführung kommt, seither kaum an Faszinationskraft verloren. Das Rohe, Barbarische verfehlt seine Wirkung nie. Womit sich das Werk natürlich auch bestens für Klangfanatiker anbietet: Solch abrupte Dynamikwechsel gibt es im 'klassischen' Repertoire nicht oft. Kein Wunder also, daß die 35mm-Pioniere bei Everest auch ein "Sacre" aufnahmen, um die Überlegenheit ihrer Aufnahme-Technologie unter Beweis zu stellen. Letzteres ist ihnen auch durchaus gelungen – und nebenbei auch noch eine Einspielung, die man trotz der großen Konkurrenz (Monteux, Solti usw.) durchaus in Betracht ziehen sollte! Bernie Grundman hatte seinerzeit für die Neuauflagen Lackfolien sowohl mit 33 als auch 45rpm geschnitten die 45rpm-Versionen wurden jedoch niemals veröffentlicht! Jedes Set von zwei LPs steckt in einem Stoughton Printing Klappcover mit von Hand aufgebrachtem Deckblatt, an der typischen Falzung erkennbar, und zeigt die originale Artwork incl. des Everest Records Markenzeichens. Beide LPs stecken zudem zu ihrem Schutz in einer Klarsichthülle. Aram Khatschaturian, armenisch-russischer Komponist, ist hauptsächlich bekannt durch seine Balletwerke „Gayaneh“ (mit dem berühmten Säbeltanz) und „Spartakus“. Dass er tatsächlich aber eine enorme Anzahl von Sinfonien, Suiten, Liedern und sonstigen Werken geschrieben hat, ist vermutlich nur Spezialisten für russische Musik bekannt. Eines seiner schönsten und zugleich imposantesten Stücke ist dieses Konzert für Klavier und Orchester. Es ist farbenfroh, wie viele seiner Kompositionen von der Folkloristik geprägt, vom renommierten London Symphony Orchestra und dem britischen Pianisten Peter Katin sehr lebendig gestaltet und: extrem dynamisch - hier gilt es, vorsichtig mit dem Lautstärkeregler umzugehen. Hier zeigt sich exemplarisch, warum Überspielungen von 35mm-Magnetfilmen unter audiophilen Plattenhörern so begehrt sind! Eine unglaubliche LP, mit einem viel zu selten gehörten Werk der russischen Romantik. Direkt vom 35mm-Filmband gemastert von Bernie Grundman über seine röhrenbetriebene Schneidemaschine. ********************************************************************************************* Rezension: Im Vergleich zu den Kollegen Prokofiev oder Schostakowitsch ist Aram Khachaturian ein gemäßigter Modernist; seine Musik ist nicht nur in bezug auf Emotionalität und Dramaturgie, sondern auch in harmonischer Hinsicht noch eng mit der romantischen Tradition verbunden. Charakterisiert wird sie von der heimatlichen Folklore des gebürtigen Armeniers. Nach dem (dank dem weltberühmten "Säbeltanz") extrem erfolgreichen "Gayaneh"-Ballet dürfte das Klavierkonzert aus dem Jahre 1935 neben dem fünf Jahre später entstandenen Violinkonzert das populärste Werk des Komponisten sein – und die Verwandtschaft mit den großen Konzerten Rachmaninoffs und Tschaikowskys ist unüberhörbar. Die Everest-Aufnahme mit dem gerne unterschätzten britischen Pianisten Peter Katin ist wahrscheinlich eine der bedeutendsten Leistungen in dessen Diskographie – und klanglich dank Aufnahme auf 35mm-Film bis heute eine der besten; in dieser 45 UPM-Version mehr denn je! Der legendäre Impresario des Pariser 'Ballet Russe', Serge Diaghilev, hatte es während einer Spanientournee mit seiner Truppe bei de Falla in Auftrag gegeben. Randvoll ist es mit Rhythmen und Melodien aus der spanischen Folklore; eine der farbenprächtigsten Balletkompositionen der Epoche! Hier aufgeführt von einem der bedeutendsten spanischen Musiker des 20. Manuel de Falla's famed 3 Cornered Hat is a hard piece to perform with the Latin sense of flair and excitement necessary to convey the wonder of the composition. Fiedler on RCA (LSC 2744) tries with some success to get the flair but is no equal for Argenta on London/Decca (CS 6050). The Jorda read with the London Symphony is electric from the first vocal burst! To say that Jorda owns this piece would not be an overstatement — it is exciting and largely festive in the way de Falla intended it to be! Add to a fantastic performance the Bert Whyte / Everest 35mm recording at London's famed Walthamstow Assembly Hall and you have a desert island disc!
