Additional personnel: Mel Collins (saxophone); Sue & Sunny (background vocals). 1974's BAD COMPANY laid the groundwork for much of the mainstream hard rock that would dominate FM radio and album sales in the 1970s and '80s. In contrast to the expansive canvases of psychedelic music and the virtuoso excesses of prog rock, Bad Company's debut stripped the blues-rock model down to its essentials, playing muscular, amped-up power chords over driving 4/4 beats. Though the singing of vocalist Paul Rodgers (who had previously been in the blues-based band Free) has a rather flat affect, it is powerful and distinctive, meshing perfectly with the bluesy riffs of guitarist Mick Ralphs. ......................... The tightly structured songs are cut from similar cloth, but the exuberant "Can't Get Enough," the snarling "Bad Company," and moody, spectral "Ready For Love" provide enough variety to keep things interesting. The gentle "Seagull," though uncharacteristically introspective for the band, is one of Rodgers/Ralphs's finest compositions. Subsequent Bad Company albums would rework the same basic themes, but BAD COMPANY, the group's opening salvo, was their defining work. It remains a classic of straightforward, blues-based rock. ......................... Bad Company's formation in 1973 signaled the arrival of a blues-rock supergroup. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke came from Free, guitarist Mick Ralphs was Ian Hunter's foil in Mott The Hoople and Boz Burrell had done time with King Crimson. ANTHOLOGY collects many of their well-known hits/classic rock staples ("Can't Get Enough," "Shooting Star," "Rock And Roll Fantasy") on two discs alongside four new tracks recorded in 1998. ......................... Bad Company was the first signing to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label. Songs such as "Bad Company" and "Good Lovin' Gone Bad" benefited from his Paul Rodger's rich, bluesy vocal delivery. When this was released in 1971, the Faces also released LONG PLAYER (following the dropping of "Small" from the band's name) and frontman Rod Stewart released the seminal EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY. The three-album output was especially remarkable for the Faces, as the band was more known for skirt-chasing and carousing than recording music. NOD found the Faces fusing together a grittier blues and soul sound than on past efforts, which were marked by a rather modish sound and Stewart's then-folkier leanings. The group includes enough heartfelt ruminations to add a sentimental edge to the otherwise rip-roaring mix of material. After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation. The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place in Line," this album also spotlights how far Jon Lord's contributions on organ went toward defining the band's sound. Lord's mastery was such that in addition to the impressive solos on "Place in Line," his sweeping runs are the highlight of the stop-and-go "Rat Bat Blue." After leaving the Edgar Winter Group in the early 70s, guitarist Ronnie Montrose immediately put together Montrose--a hard-rocking quartet comparable to Led Zeppelin. The apparently unedited tape clocks in at more than 78 minutes, with plenty of the trio's banter preserved--for better or worse. (Sinatra: "Shut up, Sam, and sit in the back of the bus!" Davis: "Jewish people don't sit in the back of the bus!" Sinatra: "Jewish people own the bus!") There's some fine singing, of course; though Sinatra seems to be going through the motions during most of his solo miniset, his "When Your Lover Has Gone" is a highlight, as is Davis's "Out of this World." More an intriguing document than an entertaining repeat listen--thanks in part to the anarchic interruptions of many of the second half's songs--Summit is for those who already own the guys' truly worthy recordings.
