Picking up exactly where Don't Crush That Dwarf left off (with the sound of an ice cream truck), I Think We're All Bozos on This Bus isn't so much a revelation as its predecessor. This is another concept album, this time about technology, the future, and humanity's place in the equation. There are less obvious laughs this time out, and the album really needs repeated listens to begin to make any sense of it (indeed, in the Mobile Fidelity reissue, two of the members of the group contribute essays in an attempt to make it less incomprehensible). Still, there are some really fine moments that immediately click, like "Breaking of the President" and the visits from the Holygrams. Kaum zu glauben, daß ihr Gitarrist, Keyboarder und Sänger Joe Walsh wenige Jahre später an dem romantischen Eagles-Welterfolg "Hotel California" maßgeblich beteiligt war. The James Gang earned a great number of fans through their live performances, so it made sense that they would release a live record within months of their successful third album. Live in Concert captures much of the energy of their live performances, with Joe Walsh's guitar solos catching fire on nearly every song. The Dillard & Clark duo was Gene Clark's most artistically successful post-Byrds collaboration, and his best venture into country-rock as well. With Chris Hillman and Bernie Leadon playing behind the duo throughout the first album, in many ways it is as much an offshoot of the Flying Burrito Brothers' work as it is of the Byrds, with more of the Burritos' feel. The standard of playing and singing on both albums is extremely high, but the ten songs on The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark are more impressive, both as recordings and compositions. The ten songs from Through the Morning, Through the Night fail to match the joyous quality or the originality of their predecessors and the sound is less unified, mostly due to the presence of a third singer in the guise of Donna Washburn. The mix of rollicking bluegrass (such as "Rocky Top" which is sung by Washburn) and covers like the Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down" and the Everly Brothers' "So Sad" is also less successful. But combined together, these 20 songs are an essential addition to any country-rock collection and are also indispensible to fans of the Byrds or the Flying Burrito Brothers. The duo's two albums are combined on one CD, making for more than an hour of great listening. Wilson.On the cover of Greatest Hits, Phil Ochs had appeared in a gold lamé suit like the one Elvis Presley wore on the cover of the 1959 album 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong: Elvis' Gold Records, Vol. 2. On the back cover was the legend, "50 Phil Ochs fans can't be wrong!" The suit and the Greatest Hits title were part of a concept Ochs, who had recently seen Presley perform in Las Vegas, was pursuing at the time. Always a student of popular culture, he harked back to the rebellious tone of 1950s rock & roll and wedded it to the revolutionary fervor of the late '60s -- or at least that was the idea for Gunfight at Carnegie Hall. Beginning a tour the month that Greatest Hits was released, he wore the suit onstage and for the first time used a backing band, mixing his own new and old songs with medleys of songs associated with Presley and Buddy Holly, as well as a version of "Mona Lisa," and even Merle Haggard's recent anti-hippie anthem "Okie From Muskogee." His two Carnegie Hall shows on the nights of March 27th and 28th, 1970, were marred by various incidents recounted on the back cover of the album. Gunfight at Carnegie Hall, containing 46-and-a-half minutes of the reported three-hour second show, focuses on the singer's attempt to explain his concept to a skeptical audience, which he does with a certain cockeyed wit, if without complete success, at least in front of these listeners. Ochs lobbied long for A&M to release an album drawn from the embattled show, which the label belatedly did, but only briefly and in Canada.
