When the average music fan thinks of Fleetwood Mac, images of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham usually automatically come to mind, as well as the pop perfection of such mega-sellers as Rumours. But the late-'60s/early-'70s version of Mac was a completely different band stylistically: a blues outfit led by guitar great Peter Green. And this is the era that the 2002 compilation Best of the Best (Gold) focuses on. It's rather humorous to think of how many casual fans must have picked up this set expecting "Rhiannon," but instead received such bluesy tours de force as "Albatross." However, that's not to say that the "Peter Green-era" Fleetwood Mac wasn't exceptional in its own right, as such standout tracks as "Coming Home," "Stop Messin' Round," and "Love That Burns" exemplify. In fact, Green's Mac was much more authentic sounding than other blues-based rock bands that were lighting up the charts around this time (Cream, Led Zeppelin, etc.). Oder "So Long, Marianne", bei dem ein Schlagzeug tief links hinten zu hören ist, also deutlich über der üblichen Stereobühne hinaus. Audiophile LP (180 g).............. ************************************************************************************************* .................Wiederauflage der klassischen ersten Best Of-Sammlung des großen kanadischen Eremiten aus dem Jahre 1975 (womit spätere Songs naturgemäß fehlen). Doch das Debüt lag auch damals schon sieben Jahre zurück, und nach ihm waren bereits drei weitere Studio- und ein Live-Album gefolgt. Große Songs für eine entsprechende Compilation gab’s mithin genug: “Suzanne”, “Sisters” Of Mercy”, “Bird On A Wire”, “Famous Blue Raincoat”, – unter anderem. Die (klanglich übrigens sehr gelungene) Simply Vinyl-Reissue enthält auch das Falt-Textblatt der Originalausgabe! Sollte man die Musik von The Byrds mögen, dann ist dieses Album ein Muss! Diese zehnte Byrds-LP enthält je zur Hälfte Livemitschnitte und Studioaufnahmen. Zwei schöne Liveversionen von „Mr. Tambourine“ und „Mr. Spaceman“ sind ebenfalls zu hören wie das geniale, über 16-minütige „Eight Miles High“. Höchst interessant klingt das Stück „Chesnut Mare“, das sich musikalisch doch sehr an „Mr. Tambourine“ anlehnt, andere dagegen erinnern gar an Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, so etwa "Yesterday's Train" und "Well Come Back Home". Letzteres kann als Höhepunkt dieser LP angesehen werden, mit 7 Minuten 45 Sekunden ist es überdurchschnittlich lang und durch die psychedelischen Arrangements sehr packend und spannend inszeniert. Review by Bruce Eder Among the later Byrds albums, Untitled was always the one to own, even if you weren't a huge fan. Issued back in 1970 as a two-priced-as-one LP, Untitled was one of the few modest commercial successes for the latter-day group. "Eight Miles High" is the high point, a 15-minute jam that showcases this band's prowess. The studio sides aren't to be overlooked, however — the group by this time was modifying its established sound into more of a '70s mode, and the influence of new members Gene Parsons and Skip Battin was showing up, pushing aside the familiar timbre of Roger McGuinn's 12-string Rickenbacker in favor of a leaner country-rock orientation. On some of this material (especially the Parsons-Battin "Yesterday's Train" and Battin's "Well Come Back Home"), they sound more like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The only song on the album to get heard by people other than serious Byrds fanatics was McGuinn's "Chestnut Mare," but "Truck Stop Girl," "All the Things," the group's version of Leadbelly's "Take a Whiff on Me," and, especially, "Just a Season" (maybe the prettiest song McGuinn has ever written) also hold up very well. Other numbers, like the environmental ode "Hungry Planet," are more of an acquired taste. ************************************************************************************************ ........... By the time their tenth album rolled around, the Byrds were nearing the end of their aesthetic tether, having pushed their brand of folk/country/rock just about as far as it could go, from their Dylan-worshipping days to the Gram Parsons "cosmic cowboy" period to McGuinn's precocious synthesizer experiments. This album, originally a double LP with one record recorded live and one in the studio, is more of a look back at where the Byrds had been and a celebration of their innovations than a step forward, but it's still full of worthy tunes and the effortless musical interaction of McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons. The live half features a searing, (then) side-long version of "Eight Miles High" that presents the free-form jamming side of the band. There are also spirited runs through Byrds classics like the jokey "Mr. Spaceman" and the jaded "So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star." The highlight of the studio half, which finds the band successfully mining the rootsy vein they'd been exploring on the last several albums, is the breathlessly exciting "Chestnut Mare," featuring a spoken section, some David Crosbyish weirdo chord progressions, and a trademark McGuinn chorus................................. ************************************************************************************************
