Aber „London With A Twist“ bietet nicht nur neun weitere Songs (sowie drei Neuaufnahmen von Songs aus „London Calling“), sondern auch, wie es der Titel schon sagt, einen „Twist“, einen besonderen neuen Dreh: „London With A Twist“ ist nämlich eine Direktschnitt-Aufnahme. Und während die meisten Musiker (und auch Ton-Ingenieure) schon vor einer Plattenseite im Direct-To-Disc-Verfahren zurückschrecken, gibt es hier satte vier LP-Seiten, aufgenommen und abzuspielen mit 45 rpm. Kenner schätzen an Direktschnitt-Aufnahmen die außergewöhnlich hohe Klangqualität, die durch das Weglassen von Bandüberspielung und Nachbearbeitungsschritten erzielt wird. Doch wer sich ein wenig in die Musiker einfühlen kann, denen für die Dauer einer kompletten LP-Seite kein Fehler, auch nicht die geringste Unsicherheit passieren darf, der kann da leicht himmelangst werden - erst recht, wenn man dann in den Liner Notes von Lyn Stanley liest, was bei einer solchen Studiosession alles schief gehen kann: Ein Wackelkontakt im Mischpult, eine hängende Taste am Steinway-Flügel, ein plötzlicher Defekt im hochwertigen und beinah schon antiken Neumann-U47-Röhrenmikrofon Und das alles muss schnell gelöst werden, denn Studio-Zeit, speziell in einem so renommierten Studio wie dem von Mastering-Legende Bernie Grundman, ist teuer und hart umkämpft. Aber allen Widrigkeiten zum Trotz gelang es Lyn Stanley und ihrer Combo, in nur zwei Tagen zwölf perfekte Tracks auf Vinyl zu bannen. Die Band, die hier spielt, ist die gleiche wie auf „London Calling“, neu dabei sind nur Otmaro Ruiz bzw. Mike Lang, die abwechselnd am Piano sitzen. Lässigen Swing zu spielen, ist paradoxerweise ohnehin schon schwierig genug, aber unter dem Druck des Direktschnitts eine derart entspannt groovende Darbietung abzuliefern, dazu braucht man schon Routiniers wie die, die hier im Studio versammelt waren. Allen voran Altmeister Chuck Berghofer am Kontrabass, der das Album mit einem solistischen Intro zu „Route 66“ eröffnet. Berghofer spielte das Stück nicht nur mit Julie London zusammen, sondern auch mit deren Ehemann Bobby Troup, der das Stück geschrieben hat. Könnte es ein besonders Qualitäts-Prädikat für diese Aufnahme geben? Lyn Stanley selbst gibt hier unter schwierigen Umständen (ausgerechnet zum Aufnahmetermin wurde sie von Bronchitis heimgesucht) eine absolut umwerfende Darbietung. Dass auf Grund ihrer Erkrankung einige Nummern um einen Ganzton tiefer gesetzt werden mussten, kommt der verführerischen Tiefe ihrer samtweichen Altstimme nur entgegen, und wo die Technik in Gefahr ist, gibt die erfahrene Sängerin eben mehr Gewicht auf Text, Ausdruck und Erzählung - und das macht diese Scheibe zu einem besonders lebendigen Album im durchweg empfehlenswerten Lyn-Stanley-Katalog. Das Aufnahme-Team aus Allen Sides, Steve Genewick und natürlich Bernie Grundman hat hier ganze Arbeit geleistet, im herrlich ausbalancierten und natürlichen Mix dieses Albums bleiben keine Wünsche offen. Wer seine Anlage und sein Gehör einer besonderen Prüfung unterziehen will, der mag einmal darauf achten, ob er auf Seite D die Unterschiede hören kann, die entstanden, weil man das defekte Gesangsmikrofon austauschen musste. Und ja, selbst solche Nuance kann diese hervorragend gemachte Aufnahme abbilden! Bei Da capo gibt es „London With A Twist“ in einer streng auf 2000 Stück limitierten und nummerierten Edition in „Ferrari-Rot“, handsigniert von Lyn Stanley höchst selbst. All your recordings are very good (the music is great anyway!), the Moonlight Sessions are exceptionally good, definitely among the very best quality records I know of. But this direct to disc is absolutely exceptional! If I did not know that I was listening to a vinyl record, I would say it must be a copy of a master tape. That's how good it is. Zwar funktionierten die Orchesterarrangements nicht bei jedem Song gleich gut, doch insbesondere das komplexe ältere Material bewährte sich in der Gegenwart von Streichern und Bläsern: "Master Of Puppets", "One", "Call Of The Ktulu" und vor allem "For Whom The Ball Tolls" sind hier in ziemlich grandiosen Versionen zu hören. Ein exzellenter Einfall ist natürlich auch die "Ouvertüre" von Ennio Morricone…! (1999/2015) ********************************************************************************************* In den Lines Notes erklärt "Michael Kamen" das Ambiente zwischen den Metallica-Fans, dem San Francisco Orchestra und Metallia Bei der Kombination eines der mächtigsten Orchester Amerikas, der San Francisco Symphony, mit der mächtigsten Rockband der Welt, Metallica, ging es wirklich darum, sich Moschus über und neben ihren Songs vorzustellen. Ein Gespräch zwischen zwei verschiedenen Welten führen, die die Sprache der Musik teilen. Schaffung eines Dialogs zwischen zwei Welten, die die Kraft der Musik feiern. lebe in beiden Welten ... jetzt auch Metallica. begann damit, Metallica-Melodien zu hören und aufzunehmen und wirklich zu glauben, dass ich ein Sinfonieorchester war, das mitspielte ... dem Orchester in meinem Kopf zuzuhören und aufzuschreiben, was ich hörte. Ich reagierte auf die Songs, erfand Melodien und Gegenmelodien, die sich um die Melodien schlängelten, und fügte bereits abgeschlossenen Songs Orchesterfarbe und -struktur hinzu! Manchmal haben wir die Akkorde oder Riffs unterstützt, manchmal haben wir den Text oder eine Solo-Linie kommentiert, dem Song unsere Joche hinzugefügt, die richtigen Parts auf den falschen Instrumenten gespielt ... jedem Spieler etwas zu sagen; und vor allem das Gefühl und den Klang, als wäre es immer da gewesen. Rockbands erfinden ihre eigenen Rollen. Orchester verlassen sich auf einen Komponisten und einen Dirigenten, um ihnen genau zu sagen, wann und wie und was sie spielen sollen. Bei Bedarf lesen sie „Fliegenflecken“ auf Papier und fügen jeder Note ihre eigene Ausdrucksfähigkeit hinzu, damit sie lebendig wird. Als die mit den Symphoniemitgliedern beladenen Busse am ersten Tag der Show ankamen, trafen sie auf jubelnde Horden von Metallica-Fans, die im Park gegenüber der Halle campiert hatten - nicht die übliche Begrüßung für ein Sinfonieorchester! Etwas anderes war los. Der erste Kontakt mit dem Publikum war ein erschreckendes Gebrüll, das das Orchester erschreckte und eher daran gewöhnt war, höflich zu applaudieren. Die Reaktion der Menge war wie Adrenalin auf der Bühne, und wir alle lebten davon. Diese Art der Zustimmung ist inspirierend! 'Die Veranstaltung fand in einem' formalisierten 'Rahmen statt, mit Orchestermitgliedern in Krawatten und Schwänzen, Uniformen und Bandmitgliedern und Publikum in Bühnen- und Straßenkleidung. Zu fühlen, wie das Publikum mir und dem Orchester stehende Ovationen gab, noch bevor eine Note gespielt wurde, war sowohl beruhigend als auch freundlich, aber ich hatte auch das Gefühl, dass das Publikum seinen eigenen Wagemut applaudierte, dort zu sein. Sie waren zu allem bereit ... Tapfere Fans! Die Schönheit von fast hundert Musikern, von denen jeder sein ganzes Leben darauf verwendet hat, seine Fähigkeit zu perfektionieren, durch die Musik und ihr Instrument zu sprechen und sich auszudrücken und zusammen zu spielen. Sie reagieren aufeinander und die Musik ist der Grund, warum das Orchester ursprünglich gegründet wurde. Sie spielen bei fast jedem Konzert Konzerte, die Soloklavier oder Violine begleiten ... aber das war etwas anderes ... eine schöne neue Welt! Im Verlauf des Abends wurden Barrieren abgebaut - nicht nur zwischen Publikum und Spielern, sondern auch zwischen Spielern und Spielern. Die Band wanderte um die Bühne und in die Sektionen des Orchesters; Orchesterspieler sprangen auf und freuten sich darauf, am Rand ihrer Sitze Musik zu machen. Wir haben nicht nur unterstützt; und schon gar nicht "versüßen" ... stattdessen wurde die Symphonie tatsächlich der "fünfte Beatle" - ein Mitglied von Metallica. Beispiel: 'Call of Ktulu' ist auch ohne Orchester ein symphonisches Stück. Eine Geschichte in der Musik. Metallica-Musik ist immer eine Geschichte. Das Hinzufügen eines Orchesters war wie das Schreiben einer Filmmusik zu dieser Geschichte. Tanzen um die Abschnitte der Melodie. Jeder Spieler im Orchester, der so hart arbeitet wie Metallica, engagiert sich für die Musik. „Nach zwei Abenden voller Sturm und Drang - ich denke, das, was mir am meisten in den Sinn kommt, ist das schiere Kräfteverhältnis zwischen elektrischen und natürlichen Instrumenten. Die Massivität von allem war fantastisch! Ich kehre immer wieder zu Metallicas 'Rolling Stone'-Zitat zurück: -... wir erwarten kein einfaches Hören ... die Band wird das 100-köpfige Ensemble mit voller Verstärkung zusammenbringen ... wir können immer noch verschiedene Wege finden, um es zu bekommen Nun, ich würde es einen Wagner-Orgasmus nennen! Es war eine umfassende musikalische Erfahrung, bei der alle Spieler hart spielten und ihre Smoking und schwarzen Formale aus der Übung durchtränkten. Ein bisschen wie alle neun von Beethovens Symphonien und 'Der Ritus des Frühlings an einem Abend! Ich erinnere mich, dass während der Pause Streicher hörten, wie sie einen trockenen Wechsel der Kleidung hätten mitbringen sollen, und - es ist Mitchum Deodorant Time - von einem schwitzenden Hornisten. Ich denke, die Körperlichkeit des Dirigierens und Spielens war die Antwort der Symphonie auf Metallicas Herausforderung "Voll auf Verstärkung". Als der Abend u / Au ver war, fühlte es sich nicht so an, als ob er aus einzelnen Songs bestand - nur ein sehr guter Sturm, der einen Klangsturm hervorrief. "The Call of Ktulu," a track that had never before been performed live, was fated for a debut such as this. The epic instrumental, given added depth by the charts of Michael Kamen (who succeeds in putting a new spin on the band's material as he did on Metallica's self-titled 1991 release), is nothing short of bombastic. The same applies to the speed-metal classic "Master of Puppets." "Hero of the Day" works very well, with its melodic tone enhanced by the symphony. Two new songs are debuted on S&M, "No Leaf Clover" and "Human," tracks that will make for an interesting comparison to their studio versions. The anti-war anthem "One" seems as if it had been made for the classical treatment it receives here. The balance among guitar, drums, strings, and brass makes for a winning sound. Conducting a conversation between two different worlds that share the language of music. Creating a dialogue between two worlds that celebrate the power of music. live in both worlds ... now, so does Metallica. began by listening to and absorbing Metallica tunes and really believing that I was a symphony orchestra playing along ... listening to the orchestra in my head and writing down what I heard. I reacted to the songs, inventing melodies and counter-melodies that wove themselves around the tunes and adding orchestral color and texture to songs that were already complete! Sometimes we supported the chords or the riffs, sometimes we commented on the lyric or on a solo line, adding our yokes to the song, playing the right parts on the wrong instruments ... giving every player something to say; and above all making it feel and sound like it had always been there. Rock bands invent their own parts to play. Orchestras rely on a composer and a conductor to tell them exactly when and how and what to play. They will read 'fly specks' on paper if necessary, and add their own expressive skill to each note making it come alive. When the busses loaded with the symphony members arrived the first day of the show, they were met with cheering hordes of Metallica fans that had been camped out in the park across from the hall - not the usual greeting for a Symphony Orchestra! Something different was going on. The first contact with the audience was a frightening roar which terrified the orchestra, more accustomed as they usually are to polite applause. The crowd's reaction was like adrenaline on stage, and we all thrived on it. That kind of approval is inspiring! 'The event was in a 'formalized' setting with orchestra members in ties and tails, ushers in uniforms, and band members and audience in stage and street wear. To feel the audience give a standing ovation to me and the orchestra even before one note had been played was both reassuring and friendly, but I also got the feeling that the audience was applauding its own daring in being there. They were ready for anything ... Brave fans! the beauty of nearly one hundred musicians - each of whom has dedicated their entire life to perfecting their ability to speak and express themselves through the music and their instrument and playing together - reacting to each other and the music is why the orchestra was originally formed. They play concertos accompanying solo piano or violin at almost every concert ... but this was something else ... a Brave New World! As the evening unfolded there was a breaking down of barriers - not only between audience and players, but players and players. The band wandered around the stage and into the sections of the orchestra; orchestra players leapt to their feet, excited to be making music on the edge of their seats. We were not simply supporting; and certainly not 'sweetening' ... instead, the symphony actually became the 'fifth Beatle' - a member of Metallica. Example: 'Call of Ktulu' is a symphonic piece even without the orchestra. A story in music. Metallica music is always a story. Adding an orchestra was like writing a film score to that story. Dancing around the sections of the tune. Every player in the orchestra working as hard as Metallica does, committed to the music. 'After two evenings of sturm and drang - I suppose the thing that sticks most in my mind was the sheer balance in power between electric and natural instruments. The massiveness of it all was fantastic! I keep returning to Metallica's 'Rolling Stone' quote: -... we don't expect easy listening ... the band will match the 100-piece ensemble with full-on amplification ... we can still find different ways of getting Well I would call it a Wagnerian Orgasm! It was a full-on musical experience with all players playing hard and soaking through their tuxes and black formals from the exercise. A bit like experiencing all nine of Beethoven's symphonies and 'The Rite of Spring in one evening! I remember during the intermission hearing string players saying how they should have brought a dry change of clothes, and -it's Mitchum deodorant time- from a perspiring horn player. I think the physicality of conducting and playing was the Symphony's answer to Metallica's 'full on amplification' challenge. When the evening u/ Au ver, it didn't feel like it was made up of individual songs - just one very rnaood provoking storm of sound. Imagine taking a very stark black and white picture, tough and relentless, unpredictable yet hypnotic - as black and white as a piece of music on paper ... as driving and powerfully honest as puinping guitars, bass, drums and voice can be ... and adding orchestral light and shade, bursts of color, and surprising blocks of sound from all the incredible expressive musical instruments that have been created over hundreds of years to speak and sing our passion, our lives. These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. To this day, many of these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible, without any loss of musical information inherent in the standard practice of mastering from the inferior "production" copies.
