Marvin Gaye verwandelte diese neue Freiheit in pures Gold. "What's Going On" wurde ein kreativer Höhenflug; eines der ambitioniertesten, besten Alben aller Zeiten und Genres. Mit der bisherigen Motown-Philosophie hatte das wenig gemein: Statt über die Liebe dachte Gaye über den American Dream nach und was aus ihm wurde, sang über rassistische Polizisten, über Arbeitslosigkeit, über Armut im Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten. Musikalisch kleidete er seine Gedanken in eine Musik, die wiederum nur in Amerika entstehen konnte, einer unerhörten Melange aus Soul, Jazz, sogar Klassik, natürlich auch Pop. Kein Ton, der hier nicht genau durchdacht wäre, und doch alles andere als eine Kopfgeburt, sondern eines der organischsten, pulsierendsten Alben aller Zeiten. Eine der LPs, die die Geschichte der Popmusik in ein 'davor' und ein 'danach' teilen… Insofern mehr als würdig, Teil der ultra-noblen "One Step Plating Process"-Reihe zu sein. Mit der sich das US-Label buchstäblich selbst übertrifft, denn die 2009 erschienene "Normalausgabe" (schon länger vergriffen) war ja auch schon 'ganz ordentlich'…! – Von den 7500 durchnumerierten Exemplaren werden etwa 500 nach Deutschland kommen. Beim Label war der Titel (wie bislang stets bei dieser Serie) bereits bei Erscheinen ausverkauft. (1971/2019) ************************************************************************************************* *** Gatefold Cover Marvin Gaye war eine umstrittene aber enorm erfolgreiche Persönlichkeit. In seinen frühen Jahren versuchte der Sohn eines Priester sich mit einer Vielzahl Charttypischer Songs passend zur Tradition des Motown Labels. Doch mit der Zeit fand er sich immer weniger in dem Dreieck aus Steuerfahndung, fordernden Ehefrauen und Musik die ihm nichts bedeutete, zurecht. Das selbst produzierte Album „What's Going On" aus dem Jahr 1971 änderte alles. Mit tiefgründigen R&B Sounds und einem Soulklangbild schuf er laut Rolling Stone Magazin das Beste Album des Jahres 1971. Die Songs sind tiefgründig, für die USA der 70er Jahre ungemein offen, und dabei sogar absolut tanzbar. Der Titel „Was geschieht hier!" mit dem wichtigen Ausrufezeichen statt des Fragezeichens zeigt die Welt der USA in den Augen eines heimkehrenden Vietnam-Veterans, der sich fragt weshalb er für eine Welt der Polizeigewalt, des Drogenmissbrauchs und ansteigender Scheidungsraten gekämpft hat. Das Label Motown weigerte sich zunächst dieses Album zu veröffentlichen, da es nicht kommerziell genug wäre. Man war eher Hits wie „Heard it through the Grapevine" gewöhnt und wollte die Kunden nicht verstören. Das MFSL Re-Issue als 180g LP klingt offen, prägnant und absolut groovy. Die MFSL Ausgabe erscheint im Klapp-Cover mit fortlaufender Seriennummer und wurde von Rob LoVerde im Half-Speed-Verfahren von der Original-Master-Bändern neu geschnitten. ************************************************************************************************** Mehr über Mobile Fidelity UltraDisc One-Step und warum es überlegen ist Anstatt den branchenüblichen dreistufigen Lackierungsprozess zu verwenden, verwendet das neue UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) von Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab nur einen Schritt und umgeht zwei Prozesse des Generationsverlusts.
