After their initial long-player, SURFIN' SAFARI, the Beach Boys released SURFIN' U.S.A., a record which demonstrated a considerable leap forward in the songwriting and arranging skills of Brian Wilson, and an overall improvement in the band's musicianship. More important, the Beach Boys continued to make insanely catchy singles, like the title track, which reached the Top 10 and helped make the album a huge hit. The year was 1963, and the Beach Boys were being billed as "the No. 1 Surfin' Group in the Country." It's unlikely that their record company realized how far they would outlive the surf music craze. Other stand-out songs here are the drag-racing ode "Shut Down," which also enjoyed chart success, and the lovely, ethereal "Lonely Sea," featuring Mike Love's honey-smooth vocals. Of the album's 12 songs, five are surf-style instrumentals featuring characteristic reverb-drenched guitar and jungle beat. Particularly rocking are "Miserlou"--the song that revived the career of Dick Dale when used in the opening credits of PULP FICTION--and "Let's Go Trippin.'" .......... *************************************************************************************************
