Es dauerte nicht lange, bis diese LP in den UK-Charts nach oben kletterte, was nicht nur an der ersten Single-Auskoppelung "So Lonely" lag, sondern auch an dem unsterblichen "Roxanne". Dabei aber hat diese LP noch eine Nummer zu bieten, die sich fest in das musikalische Langzeitgedächtnis eines jeden Rockfreund eingegraben hat: "Can't Stand Losing You". Mit dieser LP haben The Police bereits deutlich gemacht, was sich später noch stärker in Richtung Popmusik veränderte: die ungewöhnliche Mischung aus Reggae, Postpunk und New Wave kam bei den Leuten an und auch heute noch hat diese Platte einen hohen diskografischen Stellenwert. .................................................................... ************************************************************************************************** Für ihre Zeit waren die Musiker zu gut – 1977 waren Leute, die ihre Instrumente spielen konnten und auch noch einen fundierten Jazz-Background besaßen, kaum gefragt. Das Debüt der Band gibt die Fähigkeiten der Beteiligten denn auch nur bei genauem Hören preis; die Band versteckte sie gekonnt hinter auf den Punkt gebratzten Rock-Nummern wie dem Opener „Next To You“; und selbst die auch hier schon vertretenen Reggae-Rock-Hybriden wie „So Lonely“, „Roxanne“ und „Can’t Stand Losing You“ sind hart genug gespielt, um The Police eine gewisse Punk-Glaubwürdigkeit zu verleihen… Das Konzept ging auf: Langsam, aber sicher kroch die LP beidseitig des Atlantiks die Charts herauf, in England immerhin bis auf Platz sechs! – ........................................................... *************************************************************************************************** ************************************************************************************************* .......... The Police: Andy Summers (vocals, guitar); Sting (vocals, bass); Stewart Copeland (drums).Recorded at Surrey Sound Studios, London, England.The Police brashly asserted themselves on the American pop scene with OUTLANDOS D'AMOUR, their first album. Their distinctive mix of rock and reggae with Sting's jazz-based vocals and slightly punk lyrics was unlike that of any other group. Before releasing any songs in America, manager Miles Copeland (Stewart's brother) arranged an American tour complete with rented van and borrowed equipment. With America thus primed, The Police's first single "Roxanne" (already a British hit) went as far as #32 on the charts. .......... ************************************************************************************************
