To cut the metal lacquer, the disc cutting turntable was rotated at 16 2/3 rpm, while the master tape was played at one-half the actual recorded speed. This half-speed disc cutting process allowed the cutting stylus twice as much time to carve an accurate groove. The GAIN system was used in the process, which featured Pass SE units with only three gain stages in the signal path. This resulted in minimal signal degradation and better quality discs. No transformers or limiters were used in the process. Plating Process: MFSL used a unique 18-24 hour plating process where the lacquers were processed into the metal masters and stampers used to produce the ANADISQ 200 pressings. The number of final pressings was restricted to insure the quality of every pressing. Production Length: Each ANADISQ 200 Original Master Recording release required a minimum of three months to complete. Sound Quality of LPs vs. CDs: There has been much debate between music listeners over whether vinyl albums or compact discs have the better sound quality. It is interesting to note that MFSL continued producing vinyl record albums into the 1990s, investing heavily in a record pressing plant long after vinyl albums had been replaced in record stores by the CD. Discussing this issue in an article about MFSL in Goldmine Magazine, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab engineer Shawn Britton talked about the sound of vinyl LPs, stating, "There's a lot more to sound than just what your ears perceive. There's psychoacoustics, and mathematically because of the sample rate of typical compact discs, you're missing information. You're looking out your bay window, onto the river, and you can crank those vertical blinds slightly to where they're not parallel any more, they start closing. That's what CD audio is like. A bit of the information is missing. And in comparing CD to LP, the resolution's not there. That's why a lot of the audiophiles say LPs sound better. A lot of people can perceive that. If you play it for them, and you A/B with a very valid comparison, same cabling, same pre-amp, same amplification, you do an A/B switching, most people can perceive that. Joe and Jane six-pack, if you point out to them how to listen, they say, "I see what you mean." What most people hear is the room, the ambient information. That lack of information is what we address in our analog-to-digital converter technology. With custom built high-resolution electronics from Theta Digital, we can get the listener closer to the actual sonics of the master tape, closer to the LP sound." Vinyl Weight: MFSL ANADISQ 200 LPs were pressed on high quality vinyl with a standard mass of approximately 200 grams. *************************************************************************************************** ************************************************************************************************* 1) Test Press - These are the actual 1st press - These do exists from MFSL in plain white cover with Test Press Labels.
