.....................Seine Liebe zu uramerikanischer Musik ist mindestens so alt wie seine musikalische Karriere: Soul, Rhythmen & Blues, Jazz. Diesen drei Grundpfeilern huldigt der Ire immer wieder; dem vierten Country album bisher nur selten und mehr im Vorbeigehen. Noch nie jedenfalls so offen und konsequent wie hier: " Pay The Devil " ist ironischerweise im heimischen Belfast aufgenommen und ist ein lupenreines Country-Album; die Songs stammen grösstenteils von den Genre Legenden: Hank Williams, Bill Anderson, Webb Pierce, Rodney Crowell. Seine eigenen bestehen daneben wie selbstverständlich, wie es sich für einen wahren Meister aller Klassen gehört. Natürlich: Van ist eigentlich ein Soul-Sänger. Und in der Tat erinnert hier Einiges an Ray Charles .... entsprechende Annäherung an die Musik des weißen Amerika, Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music aus dem Jahre 1962. Nicht die schlechteste Referenz. Zumal Morrison hier dasselbe gelingt wie der Soul-Legende vor über 40 Jahren, nämlich den Songs durch ins Mark treffenden Gesang eine neue Seele zu verleihen. Es wird selbstverständlich Fans geben, die ihren Van lieber im Blues-, im Folk- oder im Jazz-Kontext sehen bzw. hören möchten. Das Fazit ist daher ein persönliches: Ich habe ein neues Van Morrison-Lieblingsalbum. Zumindest, was die letzten 30 Jahre seiner Diskographie betrifft. Die US-Pressung ist nicht durchgehend störungsfrei, doch für heutige Verhältnisse zufriedenstellend. Das Mastering ist, wie zumeist bei Lost Highway dafür aber ausgezeichnet! ...................
