"Imperial Bedroom" erschien 1982 nach Elvis Costellos Country-Cover-Album "Almost Blue". "Almost Blue" war, so Costello, eine Reaktion auf den enormen Erwartungsdruck, dem er sich durch Fans und Kritiker ausgesetzt sah, und der ihn kreativ erlahmen ließ (daher ein Album nur mit Coversongs). "Imperial Bedroom" dagegen zeigt Costello wieder zu altem Elan zurückgekehrt: er und seine Begleitband "The Attractions" heizen hier in fünfzehn Tracks quer durch alle möglichen Besetzungen, Stilrichtungen, Genres, Tonfälle und Stimmungen. Costellos Texte auf "Imperial Bedroom" gehören zu seinen originellsten und ausgefeiltesten, und ebenso ausgefeilt sind die sämtlich in konzentrierter Studio-Atmosphäre entstandenen Arrangements. Und besondere Spuren hinterließ auch Produzent Geoff Emerick, der als Toningenieur schon zahlreiche Beatles-Aufnahmen betreute. Der Sound des Albums ist breitgefächert - von der jazzigen Piano-Ballade "Almost Blue" bis zum poppig-wuchtigen Symphonie-Orchester-Sound bei "And In Every Home" - und klanglich vor allem im Remastering durch Krieg Wunderlich absolut vom Feinsten.
