Mosaic is a 1961 jazz album released by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers on Blue Note Records. The album's performers included: Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Cedar Walton (piano), Jymie Merritt (bass) and Art Blakey (drums). They recorded and performed together from 1961 into 1964. Hubbard and Walton became permanent members of the group following the 1961 departures of trumpeter Lee Morgan and pianist Bobby Timmons. The Mosaic recording session featured no alternate takes and, therefore, has yielded no bonus material in reissue.

AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn
Drummer Art Blakey led many great editions of the Jazz Messengers from the inaugural mid-'50s sessions until his death in the '90s. While arguments rage regarding which was his best, there is no doubt that the 1960-1961 unit figures in the debate. This wonderful 10-LP-set, notated with care and painstaking detail by Bob Blumenthal, covers studio and live sessions from March 6, 1960, to May 27, 1961, with the same personnel on all but two songs. Producer Michael Cuscuna used only first issue dates, and while he included some alternate takes, he did not litter the discs with second-rate vault material. They smoothly detail the band's evolution, cohesion, and maturation. This set, as with all Mosaic boxes, goes beyond essential. Get it post haste.

(Mosaic); Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Paris 1958 (Bluebird); Hard Champions (Jazz Messengers, Evidence).
Drummer Art Blakey goes down in jazz annals in several ways, including for artistry and energy on his instrument. But perhaps more lasting is the influence his group has had not only on the development of the hard bop idiom but also for his influence on the generations of young players who have gotten their on-the-job training with Blakey. The list includes such figures as Wynton Marsalis, Keith Jarrett, Jackie McLean, Benny Golson, John Hicks, Woody Shaw, Joanne Brackeen, Curtis Fuller and Steve Turre.
Each successive group had different qualities, which kept the Messengers growing all the time. But to my taste the group in 1960 (and a little later, when Curtis Fuller joined on trombone), was the finest. Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Bobby Timmons on piano, these musicians were extraordinary. It was a dream band almost as luminous as Miles Davis`s group with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley Paul Chambers and Bill Evans.
