Illinois Jacquet (geb. 1922) war ein berühmter US-Jazzmusiker. Der Tenor-Saxophonist war bekannt für seine stilübergreifenden Ideen und Kompositionen und spielte mit fast jeder Jazz- und Blues-Größe seiner Zeit zusammen. Einem breiteren Publikum wurde er 1993 bekannt, als er gemeinsam mit dem damaligen US-Präsidenten und Hobby-Saxophonisten Bill Clinton zu dessen feierlicher Amtseinführung ein Duett gab. Sein letztes Konzert gab er am 16. Juli 2004 in New York; sechs Tage später erlag er einem Herzinfarkt. ............................ ************************************************************************************************** .................... ALBUM NOTES: ...................................... This is the 1st reissue of this title on any format since the album went out of print in 1978. The album was recorded in Japan in 1975. Illinois Jacquet was part of an all star jazz band touring Japan on behalf of Toshiba. Other members of this all star jazz group were Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Roy Haynes and Kenny Burrell. The band played an outdoor concert in a baseball stadium during which Jacquet agreed and, one warm night after they had finished one of their scheduled concerts, he gathered some of his fellow jazz musicians and bundled them all into a couple of cabs and headed toward the recording studio. That particular day just happened to be Illinois jacquet’s Birthday so hence the title of the album and the spectacular cut Birthday Party Blues. The musicians who showed up to help Illinois celebrate and who all appeared on this album are: Kenny Burrell (guitar), Art Farmer (flugel), Roy Haynes (drums), James Moody (flute & tenor), Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax), Joe Newman (trumpet), Jack Six (bass), and Jimmie Smith (piano). No exaggeration to describe this as one of the most impressive line-ups to appear on a single jazz album. The songs on this album include magnificent performances of The Shadow of Your Smile and Polka Dots and Moon Beams but the one track that is guaranteed to blow most listeners away is the above mentioned Birthday Party Blues. An extended eleven minute blues improvisation, this performance also features solos by Mulligan and Art Farmer as well as a lengthy and unforgettable climactic instrumental break by Mr. Jacquet himself. (After listening to this cut, even hardcore classical music listeners have begged me for a copy of this album! This is also a beautifully recorded jazz album with an excellent sense of acoustic space and the spatial relationships between the many instruments as well as an almost perfect tonal balance. *************************************************************************************************** ......................... Recorded to celebrate Jacquet's 50th birthday, this date is an all-star collaboration with some of the greatest names in jazz: Kenny Burrell, James Moody, Joe Newman, Art Farmer, Jimmy Smith (on piano,) Gerry Mulligan, Jack Six, and Roy Haynes. It comes off loose and free, as if no charts were thrown at the musicians and they simply went at these three standards (two being movie-theme ballads), along with two of Jacquet's numbers, completely off the cuff. Moody leads on flute for the sultry bossa "Ebb Tide," with Farmer playing flugelhorn and Jacquet only getting his feet wet later in the bridge; all three counter jab near the end. "The Shadow of Your Smile" is more typical, with Burrell leading, Jacquet's mushy, blues-drenched tenor playing the melody, and Moody's flute filling whatever cracks crop up. The low-down "Birthday Party Blues" ballad is set up by Burrell and Six; Mulligan and Newman traipse through the midsection of this ten-minute jam, while Illinois' woodwind howls and the others chime in a bit. "Polka Dots & Moonbeams" is all Jacquet's, and he takes the baton, although Six goes it alone twice, and Burrell takes the rhythm section on solos. The cover of "On the Beach" is a hard, rip-roaring swinger that runs over 13 minutes, with the birthday boy leading and others to follow. Moody's smoother tenor provides a fine contrast to Jacquet's signature Texas edge; Newman's great muted trumpet with the rhythm trio is only further evidence that he should not continue being an uncrowned king. As short as it is (36 minutes), it's a shame there isn't more material -- too bad, for this was an incredible band. ~ Michael G.
