*********************************************************************************************** Eine der gesuchtesten Scheiben der Rockgeschichte wurde Gott sei Dank nun in guter Qualität wiederveröffentlicht. Mit dem Doppel-Album - übrigens die erste Debüt-Doppel-LP der Rockgeschichte - hat man nicht nur ein Meilenstein -, sondern mindestens ein Zehnmeilenstein-Album in der Hand. Bereits der Opener „Hungry Freaks Daddy“ offenbart die Güte des von Tom Wilson perfektestens produzierten Doppeldeckers. Mastermind Frank Zappa spielt ein tief blues-orientiertes Gitarren-Solo. Roy Estrada am Bass und „the Indian Of The Group“ Jimmy Carl Black hämmern einen gnadenlosen Rhythmus. Mit „How Could I Be Such A Fool“ und „You Didnt Try To Call Me“ vermischen die Mothers schwülstigen 50s Pop mit beißender Ironie. „Trouble Coming Every Day“ ist eine Anklage gegen die Rassendiskriminierung in den USA und zeitlos aktuell. Das über 8 Minuten lange „Help I'm A Rock“ ist eine gigantische Klang-Collage bei der mehr als 100 Gastmusiker - darunter Les McCann, Kim Fowley, Mac Rebennack (alias Dr. John) oder Paul Butterfield - dem Namen „Freak Out!“ alle Ehre machen. Eindringlich die Stimme von Ray Collins, der auch eine abgefahrene Mundharmonika spielt. Völlig abgespaced kommt „The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet“, das auf über 12 Minuten in un-erhörte Klangwelten führt. Was das Album so besonders macht, ist die harmonische und gleichzeitig spannende Melange aus Beat, Rock, Rhythm'n'Blues und Doo Wop. Auch das Cover-Design von Jack Anesh war damals revolutionär und wird selbstverständlich bei der Reissue original wiedergegeben. Dieses Reissue des 1966er Stereo-Mix von "Freak Out" wurde von den Original-Analog-Masterbändern durch Chris Bellman bei Bernie Grundmann Mastering neu geschnitten. Es ist Frank Zappa's legendäres Debüt-Album mit den Mothers of Invention, dass sich als erstes Konzept-Album und als erstes Doppel-Debüt-Album des Rock 'n' Roll's erwies. The hippie/flower power culture was just getting under way, but the Mothers' debut album found them already taking great delight in turning Aquarian imagery inside out. No starry-eyed rainbow people, the Mothers were the living incarnation of underground comics such as R. Crumb's Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers: nasty, ugly, and downright dirty.Much of the musical template on this early effort is far more conventional than Zappa's later work. The framework is a blend of the avant garde, pop/rock, and, improbably, doo-wop, but it's overlaid with sardonic, subversive lyrics, bizarre instrumental touches, and an unrelentingly ironic sensibility.
