************************************************************************************************** IIke Quebec - tenor sax. Kenny Burrell - guitar Wendell Marshall - bass Garvin Masseaux - chekere Willie Bobo - drums Aufnahmen 5. Oktober 1962 "Bossa Nova Soul Samba", ein wunderbarer Bossa Nova-Klassiker von Ike Quebec, wurde im Jahre 2000 von Classic Records wiederaufgelegt, war aber leider zu schnell ausverkauft. Nun widmete sich Analogue Productions dieser Blue Note-LP, die leider auch die letzte LP des großartigen Tenorsaxofonisten Ike Quebec war, er verstarb am 16.Januar 1963. Nichtsdestotrotz ist sie ein Highlight dieses Mannes, sein sanfter und doch bestimmter Ton machte ihn zu einem anerkannten Star, den auch seine Kollegen Ben Webster oder Coleman Hawkins schätzten. Die neun Stücke auf "Bossa Nova Soul Samba" sind herrliche Balladen aus dem Bossa Nova-Genre mit sanft dahingleitenden Melodien, deren Zauber man sich schwer entziehen kann. Das ist Urlaub für die Seele! ************************************************************************************************** + Kenny Burrell, Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo, Garvin Masseaux Die auf dieser LP vorherrschende, schwüle, molltonale Stimmung mit brasilianischem Akzent scheint von Ike Quebec, der unter Krebs in fortgeschrittenem Stadium litt und daran drei Monat später verstarb, beeinflusst zu sein. Sein großartiger und leidenschaftlicher Ton auf dem Tenorsaxophon ist jedoch völlig unversehrt. Quebec's Beitrag zum Ausbruch der Bossanova-Welle in jenem Jahr (1962) ist muskulöser als der von Stan Getz und basiert nicht auf den bekannten Songs von Jobim und Gilberto jener Tage. Die subtilen und raffinierten Rhythmen von Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo und Garvin Masseaux sind eine exzellente Basis für die Solos von Ike Quebec und Kenny Burrell. ************************************************************************************************ Tracklisting 1 Loie 2 Lloro Tu Despedida 3 Goin' Home 4 Me 'N You 1 Liebestraum 2 Shu Shu 3 Blue Samba 4 Favela 5 Linda Flor *************************************************************************************************** Rezension: Der Ben Webster-Einfluß war bei Ike Quebec nie zu überhören, doch entwickelte jener – der als Pianist begonnen und erst recht spät zum Tenorsax gewechselt hatte – schon bald einen charakteristischen, eigenen Ton; spürbar leichter als der des Vorbilds. Und somit auch von Natur aus geeignet für ein Bossa-Album. Das tatsächlich eines der schönsten des (damals noch ganz frischen) Genres ist und durchaus einen Platz nicht hinter, sondern neben Getz beanspruchen kann. Mit Willie Bobo war ein Meister der Latin-Percussion am Schlagzeug, und Kenny Burrells Gitarrenspiel ist nichts weniger als göttlich. Bemerkenswert auch die Titelauswahl: Kein Jobim, nur ein Almeida, dafür drei Brasil-Raritäten, die eine gewisse Kennerschaft der Materie verraten. Dazu zwei Eigenkompositionen des Saxophonisten, das wundervolle Eröffnungsstück „Lioe“ stammt von Burrell – und last not least sind da zwei höchst originelle und gelungene Klassik-Bearbeitungen zu Dvorak und Liszt… Tragischerweise blieb dies nicht nur der einzige Brasilien-Ausflug Quebecs; es sollte sein letztes Album überhaupt werden: Drei Monate nach dieser Session starb er an Lungenkrebs. Man hält es nicht für möglich, wenn man diese Platte hört. – Nun auch als 45er-Umschnitt von Analogue Productions!
