****************************************************************************************** Sir Colin Davis war als Autodidakt eine Ausnahmeerscheinung unter den Dirigenten. Da er nicht über die notwendigen Klavierkenntnisse verfügte, blieb dem angehenden Klarinettisten die Aufnahme in die Dirigentenklasse am elitären Londoner Royal College of Music verwehrt. Er setzte sich dennoch durch, wurde Chefdirigent des BBC Symphony Orchestra, leitete das Symphonieorchester des Bayrischen Rundfunks und später das London Symphony Orchestra. Zeit seines Lebens hegte er eine Leidenschaft für Mozart, zu seinem Erbe gehören aber auch die Einspielungen der Werke Hektor Berlioz' und Jean Sibelius'. Diese Aufnahme aus dem Jahr 1974 entstand im Amsterdamer Concertgebouw Grotezaal. ******************************************************************************************* Sir Colin Davis was an exceptional self-taught conductor. Since he did not have the necessary piano skills, the prospective clarinetist was denied admission to the conducting class at the elite London Royal College of Music. Nevertheless, he prevailed, became chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and later the London Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his life he had a passion for Mozart, but his legacy also included the recordings of Hector Berlioz 'and Jean Sibelius' works. In der Geschichte der Symphonie, von Haydn über Beethoven bis zu Mahler, wird die revolutionäre Kraft von Hector Berlioz „Symphonie Fantastique“ oft zu wenig beachtet. Als sie 1830 uraufgeführt wurde, schritt sie mit Wucht durch eine Tür, die nur wenige Jahre zuvor Beethovens neunte Symphonie einen Spalt geöffnet hatte. Die Symphonie wurde von ihren engen formalen Fesseln befreit; bei Berlioz ist sie ein fünfaktiges Drama, erzählt die Liebesgeschichte eines jungen Künstlers, arbeitet mit einem außermusikalischen Programm (begründet so nebenbei die Programmmusik), arbeitet mit einem einzigen Leitmotiv, das alle fünf Sätze durchzieht, und ist reich an neuen und gewagten orchestralen Instrumentierungs-Effekten. In vielen Aufnahmen gerät das klangprächtige Werk oft zur oberflächlichen Effektparade, nicht so in dieser Aufnahme. Gefühlvoll und dramaturgisch äußerst raffiniert führt SIR COLIN DAVIS durch das Werk, und lässt das Orchester in ungeahnten Farben und Facetten erstrahlen.
