John Ore - bass Frank Dunlop - drums Aufnahmen Oktober/November 1962. Thelonious Monk (1917 - 1982) gilt als einer der unverwechselbarsten Jazz-Pianisten und Komponisten überhaupt. Privat ein Sonderling und Exzentriker, blüht Monk beim Musizieren auf wie nur wenige. Immer exzentrisch, immer besonders, mal mit Blues, mal mit Humor. 1962 nahm Jazzpianist Thelonious Monk seine erste Platte für Columbia Records auf, nachdem er zuvor mehrere Jahre lang kein Aufnahmestudio betreten hatte. Die bei dieser Session entstandenen Quartett-Aufnahmen gehören bis heute zu den erfolgreichsten Monk-Aufnahmen überhaupt. "Monk's Dream" bietet einige unverwechselbare Original-Kompositionen, darunter das Titelstück, oder den verdreht witzigen Five Spot Blues. Aber auch die Cover-Versionen bekannter Standards, die sich unter den acht Tracks des Albums befinden, sind mit dem typischen Monk-Anstrich versehen. Seine Version von "Just A Gigolo" beispielsweise, in der das Solo-Klavier die bekannte Melodie beinahe gewaltsam zu zerstückeln und neu zusammenzusetzen scheint, macht diesen Evergreen gewissermaßen hinterrücks auch zum Monk-Original. Überhaupt ist dieses Monks größte Stärke, die er auf dieser Platte so ungehemmt und gut gelaunt wie nur selten ausspielt: sich jede Musik so kompromisslos seinem ureigenen Stil zu unterwerfen, dass man sich nur noch fragen kann: ist das Jazz? Ist dieser Kerl ein Pianist? Nun, in erster Linie ist es eben Monk. Was der im Sozialleben so unzugängliche Thelonious Monk auf diesem Album in seiner Solo-Piano-Version von "Body And Soul" mit diesem legendären Stück zu Stande bringt, ist mindestens ebenso genial wie Coleman Hawkins epochemachende Aufnahme des Songs. Wenn Monk ein Solo spielt, improvisiert er zwar - aber eigentlich trifft es die Sache eher, wenn man sagt: er komponiert. Aus kleinsten Motiven und strukturellen Ideen lässt Monk organische Gebilde höchster Komplexität entstehen, die untrennbar mit dem jeweiligen Stück verbunden sind. Teo Macero vergleicht in seinen Liner Notes zu "Monk's Dream" das Pianospiel Thelonious Monks mit der Malerei Pablo Picassos. Und dieser Vergleich ist tatsächlich sehr treffend: genau wie die Gemälde des spanischen Meisters sind Monks Improvisationen und Kompositionen oft zunächst befremdlich, kantig, fast ein wenig unnahbar - bei näherem Hinsehen/Hinhören offenbaren sie sich dann aber als durchaus auch konkrete, fassliche Gebilde, die bekanntes auf ungewohnte Art darstellen, und das bei aller Kunst auch nie ganz ohne Humor. Mit Charlie Rouse am Tenorsaxofon steht neben Monk ein herrlich kontrastierender Solist: melodisch, lyrisch, swingend - aber mit dem gleichen kantigen Blues-Feel, das auch bei Monk sein Spiel bestimmt. Und die Rhythmus-Gruppe um John Ore am Bass und Frankie Dunlop an den Drums verdient beinahe eine Auszeichnung: jede noch so verrückte rhythmische Idee von Monk bauen sie instantan in ihre Begleitung ein, bieten aber auch genau das stabile, unverrückbar swingende Fundament, auf dem sich ein Solist mit Monk, mal laid back, mal völlig out of time, breitmachen kann. Ein echter Genuss. Grandioses Mastering und grandioser Klang! ************************************************************************************************ Rezension: Monks erste Studioaufnahme nach mehreren Jahren, und sein Debüt für Columbia. Mit John Ore und Frankie Dunlop hatte er eine Rhythmusgruppe gefunden, die sich von den Fallstricken in seinem Spiel nicht irritieren ließ; Saxophonist Charlie Rouse – seit 1959 fester Partner – war ein wahrer Bruder im Geiste, der wohl wie kein zweiter zeitgenössischer Musiker begriff und fühlte, was der eigenwillige Pianist wollte. Das hier zu hörende Zusammenspiel ist entsprechend sagenhaft und vergleichbar (nicht stilistisch!) vielleicht nur mit dem klassischen Miles Davis-Quintett der Prestige-Jahre. "Five Spot Blues" und "Bolivar Blues" sind diesbezügliche Sternstunden… Doch auch die beiden reinen Solo-Nummern des Pianisten zählen zu dessen diskographischen Höhepunkten: Was hier etwa mit "Body und Soul" geschieht, sollte man gehört haben… – Die Impex-Ausgabe dürfte die bislang beste Vinylausgabe dieser Sternstunde sein: Klanglich, preßtechnisch und (in bezug aufs Cover) optisch und haptisch! Recognized as one of the most inventive pianists of any musical genre, Monk achieved a startlingly original sound that even his most devoted followers have been unable to successfully imitate.
