Peterson bzw. sein Label Brownswood hatte 2018 das begeisternde Debüt der jungen sechsköpfigen Band Maisha veröffentlicht und dann einen Festival-Auftritt der Saxophon-Legende Gary Bartz mit Maisha als dessen Begleitband arrangiert. Beide Seiten waren so begeistert voneinander, daß sie prompt gemeinsam auf Europa-Tour gingen – und dabei (Ende Oktober 2019, ein paar Wochen nach Bartz' 79. Geburtstag) zwei Tage im Haarlemer Studio des Direktschnittlabels Night Dreamer Station machten. Das systembedingt live im Studio eingespielte 5-Track-Album gibt eine gute Idee davon, wie sich der Fusion-Pionier und das junge, an Afrobeat ebenso wie am Spiritual Jazz der 70er orientierte Ensemble auf der Bühne ergänzen. Der Altmeister hat dabei zwar die ihm gebührende Rolle des Leaders, läßt aber Raum für die Entfaltung seiner jungen Kollegen. Als Beispiel sei nur das Solo von Gitarristin Shirley Tetth in "Dr Follows Dance" genannt. Must-Have, für das Geld sowieso! (2020) *************************************************************************************************** Für die dritte Veröffentlichung aus der absolut essentiellen Serie »Direct-To-Disc« von Night Dreamer treffen der legendäre Saxofonist Gary Bartz und Maisha, das führende Ensemble des britischen Spiritual Jazz, zusammen. Sie spielen zwei Bartz-Klassiker und drei brandneue Kompositionen, die beide in enger Zusammenarbeit geschrieben haben. Nachdem er sich in den Ensembles von Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Art Blakey und schließlich Miles Davis auf der Höhe seiner »electric period« seine Sporen verdient hat, wurde Gary Bartz Mitte der Siebziger eine der wichtigsten Figuren im Spiritual Jazz.
