Es wurde aktuell wiederveröffentlicht in der Original Master Recording / Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab-Serie. Und das ist immer wieder ein Garant für höchsten Hörgenuß. Gemastert wurden die insgesamt zehn Songs - alle komponiert und produziert von Jeff Lynne - von den Original-Analog-Master-Tapes. Gepresst wurde auf geräuscharmen MOFI-Supervinyl. Die Edition ist einzeln fortlaufend in Golfprägedruck nummeriert und hat eine begrenzte Auflage von 10.000 Exemplaren. Die Band mit Sänger und Gitarrist Jeff Lynne, Schlagzeuger Bev Bevan, Sänger, Pianist, Synthesizer-Spieler und Gitarrist Richard Tandy, Bassist und Sänger Michael de Albuquerque und die beiden Cellisten Hugh McDowell und Michael Edwards haben hier 1974 eine wirklich starke LP kreiert. Gestartet wird das Album mit der “Eldorado Overture“. Geheimnisvolle Stringarrangements eröffnen die LP. Der Erzähler Peter Ford-Robertson führt in das Werk ein. Wunderschöne Melodien hat „Can't Get It Out Of My Head“ Der balladeske Song brennt sich sehr leicht ins Hörgedachtnis ein. Das macht umso mehr Freude, als die Schallplatte mit einer enormen Grundruhe läuft. Die einzelnen Instrumente sind feinzeichnend gut ortbar. Die Dynamik ist famos. Irgendwie hat man das Gefühl das schon zu spüren, wenn man die sauber gepresste Scheibe in Händen hält. Spürbar ist das auch bei „Blue Boy“, das voller Macht kommt. Das kraftstrotzende Orchester unter der Leitung von Dirigent Louis Clark verschmilzt kongenial mit den Rockmusikern. Das Cover des Klappcovers ist aus total dickem Karton und fühlt sich schon haptisch wertig an. Die Artwork des Albums stellt sowohl auf der Vorder- als auch auf der Rückseite dar, wie zwei blassgrüne, dürre Hände nach den roten Schuhen einer Frau greifen (nach einem Motiv aus dem Zauberer von OZ). In der Innenseite gibt es alle Lyrics und ein Foto der Band. Die LP steckt in einer Kunstoffhülle. Diese wiederum in einem vierseitigen Klappkarton-Innersleeve. Diese LP ist jeden einzelnen Cent wert. Sie werden ihre Freude daran haben. Versprochen! ************************************************************************************************ Rezension Es war das Album, mit dem Jeff Lynne die Welt eroberte. Der Unterschied zu den Vorgängern war im Grunde simpel, aber einer ums Ganze: anstatt den angestrebten üppigen Sound durch lagenweise Overdubs zu erreichen, lud Lynne ein dreißigköpfiges Orchester ins Studio. Was dabei herauskam, war ein unwahrscheinlicher Bastard aus Van Dyke Parks und Sgt. Pepper’s – und mit heutigen Ohren erinnert manches an ABBA und an Queen, die aber beide ihre in Frage kommenden Alben noch gar nicht veröffentlicht hatten (an dieser Stelle kann jeder für sich selbst weiterdenken). Kurz: Quietschbunt, opulent, aber genialisch und gestopft voll mit Hitmelodien. Es wundert kaum, daß die damalige Kritik weder die Band noch ihr popmusikalisches Meisterwerk ernst nehmen konnte: Jedwede Underground-Ideologie musste an diesem geballten, größenwahnsinnigen Wohlklang abprallen… Welcher hier natürlich mehr denn je zur Geltung kommt: Die MFSL-“Super Vinyl”-Ausgabe hängt die Latte sicherlich sehr hoch und macht Lynnes genialische Produktions-Leistung bewußter denn je. Eine One Step-Ausgabe auf 45 Touren (freilich deutlich mehr als doppelt so teuer) soll allerdings noch folgen. Lynne stellte mit Louis Clark einen Streicherarrangeur ein und setzte ein komplettes Orchester für die Aufnahmen der Gruppe ein. Dieser Ansatz zahlte sich sofort mit Eldorado aus, der ehrgeizigen Veröffentlichung vom September 1974, die die Popularität der Gruppe weltweit steigerte und einen Ansatz verfeinerte, der in den kommenden Jahren Früchte tragen sollte. Der künstlerische Durchbruch, mit dem sich das Electric Light Orchestra als Pionierband etablierte (und Lynne als führender praktizierender Beatles-Schüler bestätigte), ist nach wie vor bemerkenswert, weil ein komplettes Orchester und ein Chor mitwirkten, deren Bandbreite auf diesem Album mit exquisiten Ergebnissen eingefangen wird. Es unterscheidet sich von den ersten beiden Werken der Band nicht nur durch Lynnes geschärftes Songwriting, sondern auch durch die Verpflichtung eines Orchesters, das die drei Streicher der Gruppe ergänzte. Die symphonischen Sätze, die von Lynne und dem Dirigenten Louis Clark gemeinsam arrangiert wurden, unterstützen die ansteckende Musik, ohne sie jemals zu ertränken. Die Akzente dienen auch als Transportmittel in die verschiedenen erzählerischen Welten. »Eldorado«, das als Geschichte fertiggestellt wurde, bevor Lynne seine Notizen zu Papier brachte, verdankt seine Inspiration ironischerweise Lynnes Vater.
