Sonny Rollins hat eine riesige Menge an Schallplatten eingespielt und darunter auch einige unsterbliche Klassiker. Man muss nur mal an „Way Out West“, The Bridge“, „Tenor Madness“ oder „A Night At The Village Vanguard“ denken und sich den großartigen Ton dieses Saxofon-Stars in Erinnerung rufen. Musikerkollegen wie Miles Davis bezeichneten den Mann mit dem kräftigen Sound als „den größten Tenorsaxofonisten aller Zeiten“, John Scofield nannte ihn als gar als „einer der größten Musiker des 20. Jahrhunderts“! Warum dieser Mann so legendär, so beliebt und so euphorisch betitelt wurde, kann man an einem weiteren Klassiker unter seinem Namen sehr schön erkennen: „Saxophone Colossus“!.......... Diese Aufnahme vom 22. Juni 1956 zeigt seine Stärke, dem Jazz etwas Individuelles zu geben: dem Swing verleiht er neue Energie, dem Hardbop neue Spannung und im Improvisieren war er ohnehin ein Meister. Mit Platten wie dieser verschaffte er dem Jazz der 50er einen neuen Schub, „Saxophone Colossus“ war ein Ausrufezeichen in Sachen erstklassiger Bopmusik in Quartettbesetzung. Zusammen mit dem eleganten Tommy Flanagan am Piano, Doug Watkins am Bass und und dem legendären Max Roach am Schlagzeug konnte er sowohl den Standards wie dem berühmten Stück „Moritat“ aus der Dreigroschenoper als auch einer traditionellen westindischen Calypso-Melodie „St. Thomas“ eine eigene Note verpassen. Seine Stärke war es, Melodien in ihre Bestandteile zu zerlegen und mit neuen Perspektiven zusammenzusetzen und damit dem eigentlichen Inhalt Geltung zu verschaffen. Dies kann man sehr schön bei der Ballade „You Dont Know What Love Is“ nachvollziehen, bei der Rollins auf sehr geniale und gefühlvolle Weise diesem beliebten Standard neues Leben einhauchte, während seine drei Mitspieler eher einen dezenteren Part einnehmen........... Platten wie diese gehören eigentlich in jede Jazzsammlung, zumal das Remastering von Steve Hoffman die LP auch klanglich aufwerten. The year 1956 marked a turning point for Sonny Rollins. Out of the ashes of what had been a talented but troubled young tenor saxophonist, came a new Sonny Rollins, his purpose clarified and strengthened, his muse razor sharp and brimming with new visions. As a new member of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Organization, he was inspired as much by their spiritual consistency as their artistic integrity.
