Ob es der erstaunliche Tiefbass oder die dahinschmelzenden Streicher sind, ob es der sauber abgebildete Backgroundchor oder eben die unglaubliche Stimme von Roy Orbison ist, für "Lonely And Blue" wird sich jeder begeistern können. Ob Mono- oder Stereoversion, Hits wie "Only The Lonely", "I Can't Stop Loving You" oder "Blue Angel" kommen in einer unglaublichen Brillanz, die auch solche Hörer überzeugt, die normalerweise mit schmalziger Popmusik jener Zeit nichts anfangen können.(Traumhafter Klabg !!) Es war eine Tragödie: Nur wenige Wochen nach Veröffentlichung seines Comeback-Albums Mystery Girl im Jahre 1989 starb Roy Orbison, die Poplegende von Sun Records. Der Zugvogel Orbison, der sich durch seine Mitgliedschaft bei den Traveling Wilburys (Seite an Seite mit den ebenso bedeutenden Pop-Legenden Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison und Jeff Lynne von ELO) von seinem Image als Oldie-but-Goldie befreien konnte -- setzte seine Starkumpel (sowie weitere Gastmusiker) auf Mystery Girl geschickt in Szene und gab darüberhinaus sogar seinem Sohn die Möglichkeit, ein paar Texte zu schreiben. Wunder der Wunder: Seine engelhalfte Tenorstimme erklingt auf allen Stücken in vollem Glanze und hätte wohl eine weitreichende Wiederbelebung der Popkultur bedeutet -- wenn eben alles nicht ganz anders gekommen wäre. Für "Wenn-doch-nur"-Gejammer gibt es aber dennoch keinen Anlaß: Ein einziger Durchlauf von Songs wie dem Radiohit "You Got It" oder dem Vermächtnis "Pretty Woman" genügt bereits vollkommen: Wir können von Glück reden, daß Orbison dieses Album aufnehmen konnte. --Tom Lanham.................. *********************************************************************************************** ..................... Audio ...................... Mit Jahrgang 1988 noch kein Oldie, nahmen sich die MFSL-Soundveredler das letzte Album des kurz darauf verstorbenen Orbison vor. Dem damals von den Travelling Wilburys in Comeback-Höhen gehievten Crooner attestierte AUDIO 4/1988 "herzzerreißende Leidenschaften - mit Stil". Die Mischung aus schmelzend geschluchzten Balladen und schnuckeligen Rockern ging dank Mithilfe von Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison und Co voll auf. Stereoplay .......................... Am 7. Dezember 1988 starb Roy Orbison im Alter von 52 Jahren an Herzver- sagen. "The Big O" gehörte zu den Rock'n' Rollern der ersten Stunde, sang sich jedoch erst in den frühen 60ern mit melodramatischen Balladen ("Only The Lonely", "In Dreams"; siehe stereoplay 12/88) in die Ruhmeshallen des Rock'n'Roll. Als die Hits nach 1964 ausblieben, zog Orbison es vor, von der Bildfäche zu verschwinden. Erst im vergangenen Jahr gelang es vier berühmten Musikern der nächsten Rock'n'Roll-Generation, ihn aus der Reserve und in ihren Kreis der Traveling Wilburys zu locken. "Handle With Care" und "Not Alone Any More" von der Wil- bury-LP ließen bereits ahnen, daß Roy Orbison nichts von seiner musikali- schen Kraft verloren hatte. Das Album "Mystery Girl" ist ein phänomenaler Beweis für seine bis zuletzt ungebrochene Kreativität - es überträgt seinen vor über 20 Jahren gereiften persönlichen Stil in einen modernen musikali- schen Kontext. Wesentlichen Anteil daran tragen die hervorragenden Songs und die kongenialen Produzenten: Jeff Lynne schrieb mit Orbison und Tom Petty den Hit "You Got It", T-Bone Burnett arrangierte den Rock'n'Roll-Titel "Dream You" und die famose Interpretation von Elvis Costellos "The Come- dians", U2s Bono schließlich komponierte und produzierte mit The Edge den superben, an Orbisons Klassikern orientierten Titelsong. Album notes ................... Recorded from 1959 to 1960. Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system. Time and familiarity -- through multiple reissues -- may have muted the seeming significance of some of what's here, but in 1960 Sings Lonely and Blue was not only a breakthrough for Roy Orbison as his debut LP, but also for rock & roll. Up to that point, apart from Elvis Presley -- who was in a class by himself -- few white rock & rollers had even tried to make as bold a use of the LP as what we hear on this record. Orbison, his collaborator Joe Melson, and producer Fred Foster turned the singer's debut long-player into a huge canvas for a sound that combined rock & roll's beat, Nashville's countrypolitan sound, and the singer's unique multi-octave range and operatic intensity into something unique in music. The single "Only the Lonely" may have been the most accessible and commercial side of this new sound, but the whole album was packed with great moments and different permutations of that sound: the powerful lead vocal and the Boots Randolph sax break on "I'll Say It's My Fault"; the haunting Orbison-Melson "Come Back to Me (My Love)," which was like a mini-movie script, a vest-pocket romantic melodrama sung with operatic depth and played to a light rock & roll beat; Don Gibson's "I'd Be a Legend in My Time," and "I Can't Stop Loving You," both filled with larger-than-life musical attributes and emotions behind Orbison's extraordinary singing, Orbison treating the former almost like a Verdi aria while a sax solo, the Anita Kerr Singers, and a dense string section hold it in the realm of pop music; and "Bye Bye Love" given the new Orbison treatment and sounding like a country-pop symphony. The material was uniformly strong and consistent, probably due, in part, to the fact that Fred Foster was able to draw from nearly a year's worth of recording activity to assemble the contents of the album, and he also took advantage of the album's stereo release to devise a crisp, discreet, two-channel mix that brought out all of the details of this sound in notably sharp relief, creating one of the earliest stereo rock & roll albums that was actually superior to its mono equivalent. Although it had been years since his last recording, Roy Orbison was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Perhaps as a result of the newfound interest in his music, he was invited to record with the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. Orbison had a renewed sense of purpose, and also began recording material for a new solo album. Collaborating with Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty, Orbison re-creates the feel of his old recordings while sounding modern. His voice sounds as strong as ever, and he is still able to hit the high notes that convey a sad, lonely ache. The highlight of the album is "She's a Mystery to Me," a haunting ballad penned by U2's Bono and the Edge that perfectly plays to all of Orbison's strengths as a singer. Released in the months after his death, Mystery Girl was the highest-charting album of his career and spawned the hit "You Got It" -- it is a shame that Orbison was not around to experience his success.
