Brauchen Sie noch einen Beweis dafür, wie großartig Sly and The Family Stone waren? Dann gehen Sie doch einfach mal die Songliste von Stand! durch. Da wäre zum Beispiel das Titelstück "I Want to Take You Higher". Dann gibt es noch "You Can Make it if You Try", oder "Everyday People" (bevor es in der Autowerbung Verwendung fand) -- und dies ist noch nicht einmal eine Greatest-Hits-Sammlung! Als Hippies mit Stil und ernsthafte Soulmusiker bekannt, galten Stone und seine Leute als eine der einflußreichsten und schöpferisch freiesten Bands des Rhythm & Blues und Rock. Auf Stand! zeigt sich, warum dies so war. Hier gibt es massenhaft fetteste Baßfiguren (Larry Graham sei Dank), fröhliche und mitreißende hymnenartige Refrains, sowie furiose Statements zur Rassenpolitik, die auf der Tanzfläche sowohl die Beine als auch den Kopf beschäftigten. --Amy Linden............... Audio ............................................. Zuerst schlug er sich als Discojockey bei einer Rhythm & Blues-Radio- station in San Francisco durch. Weil ihm aber das Auflegen von Ton- konserven schnell langweilig wurde, gründete Sylvester Stewart eine eigene Band und spielte sich in den Clubs hemmungslos nach vorn. Mit seinem grandiosen Auftritt in Woodstock wurde er 1969 zur neuen Galionsfigur der schwarzen Musik. Selbst der kleine Prince zählt Stewart alias Sly Stone heute zu seinen Vorbildern. Und unzählige Rap-Brüder plündern den Nachlaß von Slys Funk-Family - zum Beispiel die HipHop-Hippies von Arrested Development: Sie bedienten sich bei einem Song des Black-Music-Klassikers Stand! (Everyday People) für ihren bizarren Hit People Everyday. Musikalische Alltäglichkeiten mochte Sly Stone nie. So wirken die acht Songs auf der Scheibe in ihrer Mischung aus Rausch und Rhythmik wie der Zug an einem Mega-Joint. Doch zwischen den psychedelisch verzerrten Klangfarben scheint in Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey auch nüchterne Sozialkritik durch. Absoluten Schönklang durfte bei diesem Parforceritt niemand erwarten. STAND! was Sly & The Family Stone's fourth album, and contained the hits "Everyday People" and the title track. It also contained Sly's first foray into social/political songwriting with "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey," which touches on black and white racism. Sly Stone was too busy having a good time and living life to the excess to begin to realize how influential his brand of funky soul would become. Early signs of rap also surfaced on this album. Confident, hard rocking and marvellously arrogant, the band were outrageous and exciting; even five minutes of a cappella handclapping was riveting. Two classics appear on this --"I Want To Take You Higher" and "Everyday People"--but the whole album is a necessary purchase for students of goodtime soul, dance, rap and funk. Stand! is the pinnacle of Sly & the Family Stone's early work, a record that represents a culmination of the group's musical vision and accomplishment. Life hinted at this record's boundless enthusiasm and blurred stylistic boundaries, yet everything simply gels here, resulting in no separation between the astounding funk, effervescent irresistible melodies, psychedelicized guitars, and deep rhythms. Add to this a sharpened sense of pop songcraft, elastic band interplay, and a flowering of Sly's social consciousness, and the result is utterly stunning. Yes, the jams ("Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey," "Sex Machine") wind up meandering ever so slightly, but they're surrounded by utter brilliance, from the rousing call to arms of "Stand!" to the unification anthem "Everyday People" to the unstoppable "I Want to Take You Higher." All of it sounds like the Family Stone, thanks not just to the communal lead vocals but to the brilliant interplay, but each track is distinct, emphasizing a different side of their musical personality. As a result, Stand! winds up infectious and informative, invigorating and thought-provoking — stimulating in every sense of the word.
