The documentary (and soundtrack) follow Louis and his combo on the road through Europe in 1955, and then Britain, Africa and New York (where he played with Leonard Bernstein and a Symphony Orchestra before 25,000 people in Lewisohn Stadium) in 1956. While these are not the definitive versions of these songs (one would be better served seeking out the original studio recordings), the way they are contextualized here is extremely significant. With the help of the liner notes, one can sense the almost overwhelming international effect and importance of Armstrong's music.To hear Satch laying "Mahogany Hall Stomp" on Princess Margaret or performing "Black and Blue" for the Prime Minister of Ghana; or to hear the energetic, seemingly impromptu collaboration between Armstrong and a host of African drummers upon his arrival at the Accra Airport, is to realize what this artist meant to the world. Even more intriguing are the biographical information and interviews interspersed throughout the disc. The conversation between Satch and Edward R. Murrow for example, is priceless.
