With the aid of a septet that includes a rhythm section, an alto flute, and baritone and tenor saxophones, Abdullah Ibrahim's complex, multi-faceted compositions find full voice on WATER FROM AN ANCIENT WELL. The musicians are superb, especially saxophonists Ricky Ford and Charles Davis (on tenor and baritone, respectively), and Ibrahim, whose swing-inflected, impressionistic piano work drives the proceedings. As fans of this South African native have come to expect, the set features all Ibrahim originals, many of which touch on the regional concerns and politics of his home country. A tribute to the South African leader, "Mandela" opens the album, and is followed by "Tuang Guru (about a political subversive who resisted the Dutch colonization of Malaya in 1780), and "Sameeda" (about a woman who worked alongside leaders in the slave community in early colonial South Africa). The narratives are evoked through the intensity of the playing. On the title track and "The Mountain," Ibrahim's lyricism dominates. WATER FROM AN ANCIENT WELL is surely among this masterful pianist/composer's finest recordings. ************************************************************************************************
