Charles Mingus has been quoted as saying that this is the best album he ever made, and that's recommendation enough. The second song alone, "Ysabel's Table Dance," is a brilliant blending of Latin rhythms and Mingus jazz that even the most casual listener will find entrancing--10-plus minutes of castanet-frenzied joy make one yearn to see what Mingus and his running buddies encountered in Mexico. (The bassist wrote that he took the trip to Tijuana "minus a wife" specifically to lose himself, and instead found music and sights to inspire a masterpiece.) "Los Mariachis (The Street Musicians)" manages to evoke both intimate moments with its unaccompanied solos and the enforced fun and bounce that street musicians must employ to earn their bread. "Dizzy Moods" doffs a cap to Dizzy Gillespie's own forays into Latin music, and the riff of "Tijuana Gift Shop" sets up a galloping tune that suggests the excitement a tourist feels in any authentic, potently exotic locale. Inspired by a trip to Tijuana, Tijuana Moods was recorded in 1957 but was sat on by RCA until its release in 1962. Bassist/composer Charles Mingus at the time said that this was his greatest recording and it certainly ranks near the top. The original version (which was usually edited together from a few different takes) consisted of just five performances. In the 1980s it doubled in size with the release of two versions of each of the songs and in 2001 it reappeared as a double CD with 22 performances. It has often been said that Mingus forced and pressured his sidemen to play above their potential, and that is certainly true of this project. Altoist Shafi Hadi (who doubles on tenor) is in blazing form on ... ************************************************************************************************** We have to admit that not a day goes by that we don't regret having sold off our last complete Classic Records (ClassRec) Gold CD collection about 3 years ago - dumb, dumb move on our part as now they are near impossible to find, especially in sealed condition. What's worse, the music on these discs are some of the greatest performances ever committed to CD. Even if we wanted to get a complete set for ourselves (which we do), it would be difficult, time consuming and expensive. There is no denying that the rarest and most desirable gold CDs on the planet are those issued by Classic Records. Some may argue that the MFSL, Au20, DCC, Sony Mastersound, Atlantic Gold, Zounds, MCA Masterdisc, Pope, Clarity, Sheffield Lab, FIM, GML XRCDs, Proprius, XLO, JMR, Water Lily, Analogue Productions and even Opus 3 gold CDs are just as rare (did we miss any?), but we would have to disagree. Most of the gold CDs from these companies can be found, but when it comes to Classic Records Gold CD titles, you can just forget about some of them completely! Why are they so rare and valuable? That is a tough question to answer. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that Classic Records was one of the first audiophile companies to embrace reissuing reference performances from history, especially in the classical and jazz areas? Perhaps it's because they produced their gold CDs for a very short time and in short order decided to cease this expensive production process? Maybe it's the wonderful sound and careful remastering? Whatever the reasons, this is your chance to acquire some of these super rare Classic Records gold CDs - in untouched, pristine, factory sealed condition - these are investment grade opportunities in music collecting - and that doesn't come around very often! ************************************************************************************************
